As a tune-up for Friday's big one, the JVs met tonight at Riverheads and the Junior Gladiators came out on top in a tight defensive struggle in which all the major action took place in the first quarter.

The Bison drew first blood when RHS coughed it up in plus territory and the Bison were able to drive about 35 yards for the score and added the two point conversion.

Riverheads answered almost immediately with a 63 yard dash around left end by eighth-grader Aiden Miller. They came up short on the two-point try, leaving the visitors ahead 8-6.

Then came the key play of the game. The Gladiator kick-off floated over the first line of receivers and the second line simply didn't react fast enough. It momentarily appeared as if the Gap had managed to recover but a Riverheads defender sneaked in under the pile to give the ball back to the home team inside the 40 yard line.

The Gladiators then drove in for the winning score, which Trevor Roberts scored on the first play of the second quarter. From that point, the defenses took over and neither team threatened again. On the final attempt by the Bison, tackle David Brooks came up especially strong for the Big Red as he dropped the Bison for a loss on consecutive plays. That set up a desperation fourth down play which failed and the Gladiators were able to run out the clock. They are now 3-1 on the season and I believe BG is 2-2.
