Exactly. There was no real reason for anyone to rank us in the top 8 this season with what we had lost from last year. But most of the "experts" did. Personally, I thought we'd be borderline regional host - #2 seed. Turns out, I over-estimated us a little bit too. 90% of most preseason rankings in any sport is just a regurgitation of the prior year ending rankings.

I definitely don't see us as an Omaha pick for next year. Way too many question marks after taking Lindgren and Holder out of our bullpen and taking Pirtle and Bradford out of our starting lineup. We certainly could come back strong but I won't pick us to be elite again until we get more out of our starting pitching and identify a new closer. And it would help if we find a couple of hitters in the lineup to give us some power contribution.

Yeah. One of the baseball "experts" on another board posted his projected starting lineup for us next year. It was pretty depressing. And we've got a lot of question marks in the pitching staff.

Based on everything we lost, I'd think we be in the bottom quarter of the league

The immediate future doesn't look to good.

is predicting final 8 at CWS a year out. Of the 8 that made it this year, only one was a returning team. And, two teams weren't even in the top 20 to start the year.

Last year UCLA, Fullerton, and NC State were all consensus Omaha picks in the preseason, and only one of them even made a Regional. That would be Fullerton, who barely got in as a 3 seed.
