So I just spent 45 minutes reading up on Roku and still don't know for sure what it cost's and what all you can do with it. Would somebody who has it tell me what you get for free, what it cost's to add say, ESPN and the B1G?? How do you like it? I see it has Netflix on it, I assume I still need an account with Netflix to access it?? Etc.

It's only really worth it if you can "borrow" someones cable, Netflix, etc. login so you can get that content. It's OK by itself for older movies and TV.

I have it for PlayStation Vue. Works fine. I used my subscription for espn 3 and btn2go. Free, there isn't a ton, most just either ride on the back of the subscription or cable. I use Vue instead of cable.

It's just a player. You can use apps on it like a phone. There are some subscription services available like Netflix, amazon, Hulu, HBO. But for espn and Big ten network you need a cable or satellite login, they aren't available a la cart yet. If someone you know will let you use theirs, there is a lot of content available for free. Alternatively, you can subscribe to sling tv on the roku app and get like 30 channels including espn for like $20 a month. But no Big ten.

Thanks guys. I admit I like my cable to much, and with a hip replacement on the horizon, I want channels, lots of channels. Based on what you guys are telling me, which is what I thought it was but wasn't 100% sure, it isn't for me.

Definitely not for everyone. It's time consuming to change programs and you need someone to give you cable logins to make it really go. When more things are available and the interface improves, it could really hurt cable providers. For me, it's great because I get Netflix, amazon, espn, fox, fox sports, Big ten, cbs, abc, tbs, TNT and more and I pay $6 a month total. I can sacrifice convenience for that kind of savings

CBS all access is $6/month. Everything else is free courtesy of friends/family letting me use their cable and Netflix logins.

I have the Big Ten Network on mine. .

I have ROKU with Sling, Netflix, HBO and Showtime. I pay more than most people mainly because I want those two premium channels. Between my Internet, Sling, Netflix, HBO and Showtime, I still pay nearly $75 less per month than I was paying with Direct TV and Internet up until July 1st.

Now, the key with ROKU is making sure you have a friend or family member who is willing to let you use their Cable/Satellite log in for certain channels. If you have access to that log in, you can add dozens of channels to your Roku, and its all free. That's how I can watch BTN.

I have mid tier Vue, more sports channels than I had on my dish for $45 a month, still has a dvr and lots of on demand. I'm happy with the change, and you still have a lot of saved money to buy other platforms. I also use Netflix, vudu, crackle, starz, etc.

I am sure there are cheaper ways, but I have yet to be able to cut the cable. Live sports and live news are too important to me and I am still a person that watchs TV on a TV not a computer. I could probably mooch of people to get logins, but I would have a hard time doing that. I am just not that kind of person.

I would love to just have a full a la carte cable or dish option and be done with it.

Depends, I pay $45 for around 80 channels on Vue. Most of the stuff I don't have is stuff I never watched. I bought an antenna for local channels. I like it and don't plan on going back. I may eventually switch which streaming service I use if they get better guide interfaces and comparable channels.

Its coming. Hulu Live is new, and YouTube TV is coming to more and more markets. Both have Live sports and TV. Along with cloud based DVR. Believe both are around 35-40 a month. Along with Sling TV Just plug a Roku, chromecast, xbox one, etc into your TV and you are watching there. Just need a good internet connection.

I think people are figuring out that ala carte sounds good but in the end is probably no cheaper.

The main effect seems to be, you pay about the same amount of money, but you get closer to exactly what you want with out a whole lot of extra fluff.

After families end up paying $5-10 for Disney, Hulu, Netflix, HBO, Sports, Youtube Red etc, its not a whole heck of a ton cheaper to go "ala carte".

Might be easier to fight for open DVR standards so cable companies can't turn a $80 tv package into $140 bill because you need four or five of their boxes.

Most of the folks I see saving significant money are doing so through subsidies...letting other suckers pay the cable bill and using their logins. That wouldn't be the case in a market that is now totally ala carte.

I hear you. Personally we are at about $80 a month for our dish, and I am kind of okay with that. The reason it is that much is because of the Golf Channel being on the top 200 tier. If there is a way the I could kick out maybe one of the three shopping channels or CSPAN-2 or the Russia Channel or MTV or The Entertainment Channel for the Golf Channel and some of the other sports channels and stay at the bottom tier pricing I would for sure do that.

The whole BS in Lincoln with Spectrum now requiring boxes for TVs and charging the amount they do a month is pretty underhanded IMO. At least with Dish we have just two boxes and we can watch three different TVs on 3 different channels at the same time.

It will be interesting to see how things change over the next 10-20 years in TV viewing and entertainment viewing in this country.

It will be having fiber internet through say Allo and streaming your content through any of the providers I listed or someone new. No boxes or equipment. Cloud DVR. Just be using your phone or an xbox or something you already have anyway.

I have Dish as well currently and HATE them. Crappy price and reception with any kind of weather. Once Allo gets to my neighborhood and I can convince my wife its likely Hulu Live. Or Youtube TV if they get toLincoln and would hopefully get on Xbox one app.

Where do you live that your service sucks? I always heard Dish was decent reception, but yes, during storms both Dish and Direct leave a bit to be desired.

I have CL fiber internet. $55 a month price for life. I bought the modem for $100. I bought a Roku stick and a Fire Stick fro $40 each. I ran an antenna into my old cable coax and have over the air throughout my house. I get PS Vue for $45 a month. So after buying the modem and sticks I pay $100 a month for TV and internet. For a while I was paying about that for TV and internet on CL. I still might be able to get that but I would have to call every couple of months and fight about it. Forget it. My main reason for doing all this was to never have to deal with that crap ever again. I can also just cancel PS Vue when football season ends if I want.

I have CL fiber. I got the 1 gig package. I have their Prism TV package (the 2nd best one that doesn't have HBO) and two DVR boxes.

I pay $138 a month with taxes rolled into it. I call every January and get a new "deal" that's basically the "old deal".

do you have to call the retention department every month because one of the discounts drop off? and threaten to drop the service?

Nope. The discounts are 12 months, I think I had one that was 24 months. Never had a problem with them dropping off.

They always told me my new price would be good for 12 months. Then two months later it went up 30 of 40 dollars and I would have to call again. Over and over. That is why I canceled Prism.

cox cable never did it to me, but then it's kinda fun chewing out the retention department, I'm getting good at it..I let the person know it's not personal but their company is a loser organization.

Don't get me wrong, I don't like having to call up and spend awhile getting a "deal" in January that I've had for the past 4 years or whatever, but I've personally had very little problem with either Centurylink or Cox.

I only left Cox because they couldn't even touch CL speeds at that time, and fiber is fiber man.

My mom's only problem with CL was spotty service for a time, but it ended up being a dying chip in their ONT box outside the house which they fixed and with the router that I bought her, her connection is solid.

IF I GO BACK TO CABLE ITS $185 (INT.PHONE.CABLE) + SPORTS PAK ~$20/MO. IF I JUST PICK UP PS VUE (TO INT.PHONE) IT RINGS ME UP FOR ~$170. THIS IS ALL TO GET B1G AND AMC FOR FALL.

Sorry all caps. Just trying it out.

Internet + VUE+Netflix, $112

Internet+Cable+2 extra boxes+Netflix $160

I get the same stuff for cheaper with VUE and I can take it with me anywhere in the US.
I get all of the live sports through antenna or VUE, never missed any sporting I want to watch.

I wonder if Netflix, Amazon, etc., will ever find a way to reduce the amount of password sharing that goes on? Not sure if they're motivated to do it...

The key is access to multiple providers in your area. We've had Consolidated Communications (formerly Surewest) for the past 6, maybe 7 years. I've never paid more than their promotional rate. I don't even have to threaten to cancel. I just call once a year (one time there was a 2 year promotion) and ask that they reset my promotion and they do it. No hassle at all. I get all the sports channels I want; HBO, Starz, Encore as well as all of the best cable channels; 3 boxes connected to the DVR, and 1 gig fiber internet for $150/mo. SInce we have access to Comcast, AT&T, Google Fiber (and the Dish providers) they all have to compete hard for business. It would suck if we had to choose between only one cable company or a dish provider.

I know some have caps on the number of simultaneous connections. Baseline Netflix is 2 devices, you can pay for a higher tier to allow for additional simultaneous uses. Others are single device only (I believe Sling is this way).

It would suck if we had to choose between only one cable company or a dish provider.
Unfortunately, a lot of the US has limited choices. Lots of people in low-population areas envy the bevy of competitors your area has.

We have DISH and have had no problems with reception. (Cost is another issue.) Living in the middle on nowhere we have no local channels so have to have some kind of cable. I bought my Roku to watch MLS Live.

The best thing you are going to get for free on it is probably Youtube. Most apps containing worthy channels are gonna cost you. I have Directv Now and Netflix. Directv Now costs a little more than Sling and Playstation Vue, but I like the channels it offers. BTN being one of them. Directv Now is also supposed to offer cloud DVR in the fall. Still no local channels though in our area.

Freakin Centurylink was costing us over $250 a month, and the service wasn't even that great.

Just bought Youtube TV last night. $40/month with taxes and they should have all the husker games, including on BTN. So far I've liked it. A huge bonus is that you can tell it to DVR anything you want.

The one drawback so far is that I was never able to get it to stream at 1080p. 720p was the highest option on there. And I have a TON of bandwidth.
