This guy unprovoked slams us. Is there a history here or is he just a pompous douche?

The Commercial Appeal only covers Ole Miss in the SEC and he is their beat writer. Playing up to the readers. I also think he had a falling out with MSU and Stans over his son.

Don't think it was Stans, think it was Jackie. Pretty sure he played football. Either way, totally uncalled for and unprofessional. Higgins started that over a retweet of Ray by David Brandt, Ray never said anything to or about Higgins.

He also went off on Mullen in 2011 because Mullen said that scandals move newspapers so we aren't a popular school to read about. Scandalous comments for sure.

Yep, I don't remember the exact story, but something happened about ten years ago with the football team and Higgins' son. Back then, I was at State at the time, and I would go to the library in between classed about twice/wk to read the Commercial Appeal. It was like night and day reading Ron's articles after that incident. The topic could have been about Memphis BBQ, yet he'd find a way to take a jab at MSU or JWS. Really unprofessional, and I just quit reading his crap after that since he was clearly bitter and he couldn't let it go.

On a somewhat related note, don't forget that this is the same guy that wrote an entire diatribe about how utterly stupid MSU was for forcing Templeton out. If someone has that article somewhere, I'd love to read it again.

Just got some new info on this from one of my few sources. Says after the Egg Bowl, he witnessed Higgins and Freeze engaged in a celebratory hug. Evidently all other media were taken aback by this breech of protocol, I doubt even Gene would attempt to hug a coach postgame. Little more wood for the fire as we may finally our first sports writer with an agenda aGAINST MSU. Only took 10 years.

Just something I remember from his tweets, when he was covering the OM/Bama game this year he was taken back/poking fun at the media in attendance openly rooting for the Tide and how it was unethical.

I fail to see the downside of having Ron Higgins as an enemy...

..the guy is an unethical fake. His colleagues know this. He's an unhinged fanboy who somehow wormed his way onto a newspaper payroll. If you are going to have enemies in the press, best it be discredited failures like Ron Higgins.

Well said. What's funny to me is that each Memphis writer from Geoff Calkins

and Gary Parrish to Kyle Veazey and Jason Smith have spots on radio shows. Parrish hosts his own show whereas the others get frequent guest spots, but you know who never gets invited to chat? Higgins

I've got not basis for this other than what I just said, but I also get the feeling that he's not the most respected local writer in terms of his peers

It's Memphis

The writers/radio personalities around Memphis know who has the larger fan base in town and who buys the advertisment. Also, they know we are a direct thorn in the side of the ******** they work for, receive free tickets from and gladhand.

Higgins does have a weekly segment with Wolo on Sports 56. I usually listen to that station until Verno comes on because I don't care for national shows.
