Rooting for Painter

I've got nothing else going on in the tourney, so I'm rooting for Matt Painter and Purdue. Is there any coach more underrated in the B10? (Maybe Beilein? But he's getting it done.)

The guy has won B10 coach of the year four times in his 14 years at Purdue.

11 tournament appearances
3 B10 championships and a B10 tourney championship in another year
5 Sweet 16s
(As an aside, I'm a bit surprised Purdue has the most B10 championships at 24 - two more than IU and sanctionless OSU)

He still needs that big year to be known as great, but he's only 48 years old.

According to ESPN's rating, in the last 10 years, Painter's has only had one top 50 in Swanigan. He's had six top 100s the best of whom was Hammons and Haas. I think we can say the jury is still out on Eastern.

That's a lot of development.

Agree, 112. Got a lot of respect for Painter. Not particularly a fan of Purdue basketball - in my own personal experience, they're right there with OSU football as the crudest fan base in the Big Ten - but Painter runs a terrific program, and seems to be doing it the right way.

I try to root for Painter, but whatever he’s got going on, the sweet sixteen seems to be his Waterloo. Maybe this year will be different.

I think the best team he’s had was the first year Hummel tore his ACL. That team was pretty awesome.

Made it past Sweet 16 so maybe he has gotten over the hump

Are there any two coaches more alike than Painter and Fitz? They both seemingly under-recruit, but really know how to develop these players then fit the schema to the talent about as good as anyone out there, and on a fairly consistent basis. I remember seeing a segment of Painter being interviewed in a post-game presser, at NU no less. He spoke about the type of kids he recruited, and with the NU background on display, I thought I was listening to Fitz. It was really quite surreal! Here's wishing Coach Painter the best for a trip to the final four!!! Wishing Coach Fitz the same next year for an assault on an AP Top 10 finish or perhaps even an invitation to the CFPNC!!!

They both can recruit well in Texas also. Carsen Edwards is from suburban Houston. What a game he had tonight, though the Boilers came up just short in the end.

What a game though. That was one for the ages even if I hate the outcome.

The ending in regulation was a killer for Purdue. Missed FT that would have sealed the game, then the inability to grab the rebound off the FT on the other end. Very tough for the Boilers.
