Going from those blue-blood programs to coaching at San Diego State is generally not the trajectory you want to see in a coach's career. Why did Lincoln Riley get rid of him?
No idea. Had never heard of him. Bouncing around big time programs is a positive for me.
Alex Grinch was DC those years at USC and was let go. Guess new DC brought in some of his guys. They were also at Oklahoma and Washington State together.
He's a hella good cruiter in the Miami area.
San Diego State isn't big-time though, seems like another power-conference team would have picked him up last year if he was a good coach/recruiter

He's been coaching for 15 years. 11 of those years as a full-time assistant in the Pac-12, Big 12, or Big 10. I'll give him a pass on last year. He's an experienced coach who has a year in the system of our new DC. Sounds good to me. Hopefully we find a way to keep Simpson.
Yes, but any intelligent person would think the same thing. I know Nebraska hasn't been good for a while but does our head coach who has 120 million contract really need to hire SDSU defensive staff? I get the DC, even if it was a backup plan, but now we are going for the friend of the backup plan. I know Rhule is all about "positivity" on staff, because positivity in the college football locker room and offices is always proven to win...just ask Saban, Urban, T.O...everybody was really happy and positive all the time. Don't you know that the reason boys and men play football is because it is so positive, and uplifting, and full of happiness. We don't want anybody at Nebraska to feel pressure or anxiety about performance because Rhule is all about family, and positivity.

He coached with the OLB coach for a year at most? The OLB coach is more than qualified. This actually looks like the opposite of a friend hire. This looks like taking a coach that really impressed him with him to the next stop. Very normal if you actually follow football.

Those SDSU guys might be great, but those optics are certainly there. The only people refusing to see it are your typical blind dumb homer sheep Rhule apologists who are incapable of having an independent objective thought when it comes to Nebraska football.
Or we accept the fact that the AD is not going to fire an entire coaching staff every other year, and we don't feel the need to second guess every move the HC makes. It seems the new DC has experienced good success in a very short time and is probably a pretty squared away guy. It makes perfect sense for a new DC to have another guy on the staff that knows what he wants without having to have a conversation with him. I don't remember anyone complaining about Shorts being hired, but that's because the McGuire kid was persona non grata on this board, as opposed to Holgerson wanting a guy on the staff that knows his offense with a high degree of certainty.
Again truth lies somewhere in between. I understand what those guys are saying. Sometimes there could be some truth to it. But just because that's the case SOMETIMES doesn't make it gospel. As your Holgerdson/Shorts case proves.
Wonder if that logic is the same or would've been used with Cignetti. It's rarely absolutes....

Cignetti decided he wanted to be HC and did it DYI by starting in D2. Don't know what he was like starting out, but he is for sure the real deal and Indiana is reaping the benefits.
What a lot of guys on this board do is play pretend HC. In their world, DCs should get on a plane, take the job and leave everyone behind because of course the guy the new DC wants is just a buddy. If I'm a young coach that just got my first big job, I'm not spending my coaching capital to bring a half a**ed friend along just to be on the staff and hang out with me.
We are refreshing our browsers repeatedly to find out whether the Robinson guy will come to NU. A PSU guy who got his first real gig with Rhule. He could be described as a younger buddy of Rhule. The buddy thing is forgotten is it's a coach that "doesn't suck", but apparently not if we don't know who the guy is.
