There's a shot that Starling will be a September call-up next season. His defense is said to be major league quality right now. His speed is also a premium skill. His bat, while improved, is not there yet. The Royals, however, have carried guys with very similar skill sets the past several seasons in Dyson and Orlando. Since both Dyson and Orlando are likely to still be around next year, Starling will start in AA, with a promotion to Omaha a real possibility if he continues to develop offensively.

But in September, he could definitely add something to the big league club.

Would someone mind explaining the Rule 5 thing?

Players who have been in the minors for 4 or 5 years (depending on their age) are eligible for the Rule 5 Draft if they aren't on their team's 40 man roster. The Rule 5 draft will be taking place soon. In the Rule 5 Draft, each team gets the option to take any Rule 5 eligible player from another team's organization. They then have to leave that player on their 25 man major league roster for the entire season or they have to offer him back to his original team.
