RPI manna from heaven

RPI formula needs to be modified. You should never drop 40-50 points in the RPI for winning a game. Revise it to where if you win, you gain 1 RPI point, regardless of how bad the opponent is. I’m okay with still getting hammered if you lose the game, obviously.
I’m not sure what 1 rpi point is but I think this would pretty much defeat the entire purpose of the calculation

I promise you, RPI wise, Texas AM was slaughtered, losing to Missou.
Yeah I know. But you also can’t go rewarding teams for playing a bunch of terrible teams which is what the poster seemed to support.

Also RPI has no idea who you beat. It only knows who you played and where you played them.

1 RPI point is nothing, in the grand scheme. It’s not a reward. For example, USM is currently #30 in the RPI, and 46 RPI points behind #25 NC State. The #35 RPI team is Cincinnati, who we are roughly 50 points ahead of. Let’s say that USM schedules two midweek games against Valley, and wins them both. They could very well find themselves ranked behind Cincy by virtue of winning 2 games. Did USM suddenly become worse because they won a couple games by a combined 30 runs? Of course not.

Seems like this is a conversation every year around this time. So why is a game against any low level team scheduled the last week of the season to begin with?
Because you can't cancel it after you play it.

My guess is we schedule who we can to fill out our schedule. Put one of these at the end of the season in case you need to become hyper weather sensitive.

It’s not about whether you are worse or not. It’s about what you accomplished during the season. But I don’t know how mathematically you would even do it. Again the rpi doesn’t know who you beat.

I’m not sure what you mean by that. RPI absolutely knows who you beat. Are you thinking of SOS?

No. Rpi has no idea who you beat or who you lose to on your schedule. . States Rpi would be the exact same right now no matter who it beat and who it lost to if you keep the home/away win/loss records the exact same (and Im not even sure the home away difference really matters much). You can make a Tx loss a win and a Valley win a loss and the rpi would be the exact same as it is now.

No it doesn’t. It’s your record * 25% + your opponents’ record * 50% + your opponents’ opponents’ record * 25%. It doesn’t care if you beat Texas & lose to manhattan or lose to Texas & beat manhattan.

I see what you’re saying now. I’ve heard this argument. And it’s just never made sense to me. The argument is basically, “RPI doesn’t know who you beat, it just knows your record, your opponents’ records, and your opponent’s opponents’ record.” I’ll admit to being technically wrong. But who you beat matters. That’s the whole reason State canceled the UNA game. Even if they won (and they would’ve) it would’ve dropped their RPI, the most important factor to the committee.

Hey, Texas College is on the line, they're available for the right check amount. Maybe a 100 - 0 game after seven will offset the low RPI.

RPI doesn’t care so much that you beat North Alabama. It cares that you played them. Which begs the question of why schefule these games to begin with. Everyone’s suddenly so worried that we might hurt our RPI playing North Alabama. But nobody cares that we already hurt it repeatedly by playing 14 other games vs teams just as bad earlier in the season.

So if all this is true, then why would beating Mizzou only drop our RPI, but losing to them would tank the 17 out of it? You're saying ours will fall X points/spots just for playing them at all, no matter if we sweep/split/get swept?

At this point a loss to Missouri wouldn't do much to our RPI. But it would mean a 14-16 (or worse if we lose more than 1 to them) record. Which probably means we need to win 1 in the SEC tournament to feel safe about a bid. And yes, SEC teams can and do get left out of the tournament with a 14-16 record.

Edit: Just for the heck of it I ballparked what playing North Alabama would do to our RPI. It would drop from .576 to about .574, or from #32 to #34. And that's a home win vs a much worse team than Missouri.

It could fall just for playing them, but as @patdog notes, it’s so late in the season movement isn’t as significant playing someone this bad. Where TAMU got hurt the most is losing 3 home games. That’s going 0-4 on the weekend. Then they take some hit for playing a team with a roughly .33 win percentage. Losing 3 games on a weekend at home on a weekend isn’t good for RPI against most teams.
