USC will not outbid A&M for Sumlin. They won't even be able to compete with those revived football-crazies in College Station.

Cost of living is the issue though. They'll have to outbid A&M by 25% to get Sumlin to the same place. If he's got $5MM from each school, it's really a no-brainer to stay where he is - at least from a personal finance standpoint.

Then again, maybe he wants to go to LA and check out the sunshine. I think if I had two job offers both for $5MM a piece, one in Texas & one in L.A. I'd say screw the East Texas grasslands. It's tough to frown on a jet ski regardless, but it's almost impossible to frown on a jet ski in the warm pacific waters.

Actually isn't it way more than 25%?

I don't know specifics of California's state taxes, but i remember Phil Mickelson was saying that he may move out of Cali b/c he was getting taxed a major portion of his earnings. I have no idea what the marginal increase is from living in another state, but you would have to think it is huge. Also, could Sumlin just not "live" in Cali and maybe have his official residence somewhere else?

California State Taxes usually figures in as well. Texas has no state taxes. Remember when Phil Mickelson got roasted for saying he wanted to move somewhere where the state tax wasn't so high.

Hmm, interesting. If this happens, then if I was aTM I'd have to ask the cigar/oil boys a simple question. How do you really piss off a Longhorn. Yep, make Saban an irresistible and momentual offer.

You mean chilly Pacific waters..but the quality of life in southern California is definitely higher. There's no such thing as boredom out there. But as far as a school or team, A&M over USC all day long.
