Wish ...

Dan would let him play, at least this year when we are down to Eight available scholarship BB players.

But, am okay with him concentrating on football ... as long as DeRunnya was in on the decision. Doesn't bode well for the future if you promise a kid he can play both and then pull the rug.

If Wilson is unable to play after being promised he could, I don't like this. If Wilson was promised, he should make the decision.

I'd have to think that it was a mutual decision. Surely Dan wouldn't back out of a promise made to an 18 y/o. After this past season, it should be pretty clear to Wilson, that football is most likely the better overall option for him.

Please let this be Wilson's decision. There aren't many guys we will make a promise to like this but losing one down the road because of a change for Wilson would suck .

This morning on OOB

I'll gladly be wrong.

Mullen said he'll play basketball but he'll still get a full summer to prepare for football. He didn't give a start day. Said something to the effect that he'll have to figure it out.

Mullen just made reference to him on OOB playing basketball and said that the coaches would get him back this summer after basketball season.

He was recruited and signed as a football player. I doubt that he was promised anytying of the sort.

Lot of plusses for Dan & the Football program ...

"If" DeRunnya can play basketball this year...

#1 Lot of positive 'pub' having a football player play both sports; sportscasters need to fill breaks & halftime air & it's a 'positive' story
#2 If football recruits visit & attend BB games ... doesn't hurt to have a have a football player out on the court
#3 Play OM @ home on 11 Jan; another chance to 'highlight' eggbowl win

SEC BB starts 8 Jan and runs through ~12 Mar (first SECT games); Spring practice should run ~14 Mar - 13 April (based on SBDW on 11-13 Apr and spring training starting one week earlier than last year)

Think that this is a 'win-win' if he wants to help the BB team & they sure can use the extra body!

Hard for me to see Wilson begging Mullen let him play on a very bad basketball team. Guy could have played for much better teams.

If he plays, I'm happy. If he doesn't, also happy. Guy's future is as a receiver. If he wants to ball a little on the side, that's ok too. It's been proven over and over than college basketball is the best route to becoming an elite receiver.

My only advice to Wilson if he is going to play basketball for Ray is PROTECT YOUR KNEES. For some reason, our basketball players tend to blow theirs out.

Coach Ray had stated earlier

in the year that he advised Wilson if he had everything in order grades etc that he would talk to Coach Mullen about him playing basketball. Also told him that not many 6'5 forwards make it to the NBA but there is needs for 6'5 receivers in the NFL. He never ruled it out but stated he didn't think it would happen and was advising against it, especially for a freshman.

And yet if you look at solid conference basketball players versus football players, there is a WAY better chance of having a pro career in basketball.

If he has the talent in basketball that he has in football, I'm not sure why he can't develop into a solid wing player with pro(overseas) potential.
The number of receivers in the NFL is just so small. He will have to be a great receiver to make a team. And there is barely anything below the NFL.

I heard RR say this exact thing as well. Also i *think**RRsaid something along the lines of you basically need to specialize. The day of 2 sport athletes is gone except for very few. I give myself a cushion here by saying that coulda been table chatter after RR spoke

If he doesn't make the trip Wednesday, I'd think that's a pretty good indicator he's not playing.

If we told him he could come here and play both, and then not let him that doesn't set a very good precedent. Something like that is enough to make a player want to transfer. I'm sure Elijah Staley wouldn't be thrilled to hear that news either.

Ultimately, we just need to allow Wilson to make the decision -- and let him announce his decision. Our coaches shouldn't be defining this for him when they promised him the opportunity(and I haven't yet seen any evidence that coaches are actually trying to make it for him)..

I hope he uses some of his down time to learn how to catch a football with his hands...instead of his chest.

No idea what you're talking about. Have you seen him play? Catches with his hands as well as one hand on occassion. Has he ever caught it with his body? Probably, but he has the best hands on the team. Either him or Malcolm Johnson.
