Paul Jones has an exclusive interview with Tyler Russell

Some quotes and observations..

Tyler indeed is hungry for his chance at MSU.. He literally graduated Friday, packed up Sunday, Start classes today.
No summer fun time like most guys do after their senior year. Its business time now

"It's gonna be kinda weird," said Russell, who plans to just take core courses this summer and choose a major later. "We graduate high school on Friday, move to campus Sunday and start school (today) and I am in the college atmosphere. But I am ready to get it started. My dad actually brought up this idea of enrolling first term and Coach Mullen said it would be great for me to start in June."
While Russell was obtaining his first college books this week, he was also anxious to get his hands on another book.</p>

The 2009 MSU playbook.</p>

"Right now I don't have the playbook," said Russell. "I had a book of all the formations this summer and have studied those a good bit. They don't just hand out the playbooks to anyone and that's why I came to school early, so I could get a good look and start studying the playbook. Now I will have a little down time to study it instead of waiting to be throw to the fire in July or August."</p>
Paul also talks about how he is been staying busy since the end of football season, throwing with his recievers and anyone else around.
and..doing a little work with his feet...but not football related.

Tyler also tells of when he decided to commit to MSU, and the first meeting with Coach Mullen
"Coach Mullen said he wasn't ready for my commitment until I was 100 percent sure I wanted to be his quarterback," said Russell. "He wanted to see that 'it' factor. He said he thought I had it but wanted to make sure. So he came to see me and we watched the film from the South Panola game. He watched every play and he broke down every play. He wanted to know what was going on inside my head and what should be taking place. He liked the fact I took a couple of hard hits but kept on plugging away."

surpass most of this boards expectations. I look for him to play by the 3rd game but not start. Depending on how bad relf & lee suck.

I don't expect him to start against JSU but will likely see significant playing time. It will be the perfect setting for him to gain the confidence he needs to compete. If he does not start against Auburn he will probably play the bulk and by the time we hit Nashville it will be his team.

I think you're right about this. He is going to need to get his feet wet before jumping into an all out sec game. I am impressed/happy that a core group of our young talent is enrolling early this summer with the intention of learning all they can. I don't know of many seniors in high school that graduate then willingly go to college 2 days later. I really like Russell's dedication, I just hope that he has the other components to make him a legit qb. After the spring game, I wanted to vomit at our current qbs- absolutely terrible.

I know the family and they are darn fine people and Tyler is is a well grounded kid with a level head on his shoulders. I know it's almost trite to call an athlete a "Good Kid" these days but Tyler is mature beyond his years and has a strength of character you find hard to match anywhere. Not to mention he is a damn good fisherman.

Murray has a long post explaining why freshmen can't be interviewed until fall - that it's some sort of secondary violation. Must have happened before he got here. </p>

that new freshmen aren't viewed as official students until the fall. Murray even wrote that MSU turned itself it over an interview he did with a freshman a couple of years ago.

If they aren't classified as official students until the fall, then what kind of classes are they taking now? Fake ones? Classes that don't count? If I'm enrolled in a college and taking college classes, I would like to be referred to as a real college student. That's horseshit.

Murray indeed did commit a secondary violation Dixons freshman year by interviewing him (it was an offically aranged interviewed at that..)
just after one of his first summer workouts on campus.

Futaba, Paul did this interview last week with Tyler, knowing of the upcoming "dead time" where noone would be able to talk to him.
Thus why it is exclusive.

I asked the question a couple months ago here about whether y'all thought playing him this year would result in more wins (this year). The answer was no, so why not red shirt him?

Because the second he steps foot on campus (which he has done..I saw him out on the practice fields this afternoon myself), He becomes the most talented we have.

Do you not remember Tyson is a 5'10 MAYBE, walkon QB? I love how hard he played last year, but the talent is not overall good enough to get by in the SEC.
He will still play and start the season off, only because Tyler does not have the second part of the equation yet, experience. But I fully expect him to receive plenty of snaps
early on in the season, and to be the starter no later than LSu or georgia Tech (4th, 5th game)

The only other QB we have is Chris Relf, who after watching very closely in the spring..he doesnt have much chance
as more than purely a running QB. His mechanics on the run, and while rolling out are HORRIBLE, and if the pass is more than 15 yards
the ball will be either overthrown or unnderthrown, as he has no accuracy at all. Has a HECK of an arm and can air it out, but it likely wont be
near the reciever.

already in our arsenal and the lack of talent at quarterback brings us to a point where Tyler Russel will be handed the ropes at a very early point in his career.

the only issue is whether or not (especially with the freakin murderers' row schedule y'all have) y'all will have more wins this year playing him as opposed to Tyson. If you won't, then red shirt him. I think Mullen will do that actually. He'll give him a shot in fall camp but I don't think a freshman will be effective enough to get y'all more wins this year than Tyson. Remember, Tyson actually had pretty good numbers last year relatively speaking.

Bottom line -- if he won't get you more wins (even if that's because of an awful hard schedule), then red shirt him.

Bottom line - with Dan it's the here and NOW.
He believe in using what you have now, and believes in 2-3 years, he can have someone just as good and if not better than Tyler on campus.

for that, and if that's the case then he is the ideal candidate for a red shirt. Now, if y'all had an OM-type gimme schedule, then there would be much more margin for error and the potential for the kid to showcase his talents and get some extra wins for you this year would make much more sense. I'm actually really looking forward to seeing y'all play this year. Mullen seems like a pretty good coach so far from what I've read here and elsewhere.

but if we do, next year we go into the season with Relf being the only QB with any game experience. If Croom were still here, I'd probably still want to RS him because it would be 15 more years before Croom had a QB fall into his lap again.

With Mullen, I don't see us having that problem. Let Russell play this year, go into next year with Relf (jr) and Russell (So.) and 2 true freshmen. Or, as I've been hearing more and more, go into next year with Relf (jr), Newton (jr), Russell (So.) and a true freshman.

if Russell is anywhere near as good as advertised and if Lee doesn't improve, Russell would give us a better chance to win more games (which may or may not actually translate into more wins). The other thing to consider is there's probably a fairly decent chance Lee will miss a game somewhere along the line due to injury, in which case we probably wouldn't have much choice other than to play Russell.
