Spoke to a friend of mine and he mentioned there is talk of Rutgers Newark reinstating the team.Any news to that? I remember they had some scrappers back in the day. A couple of guys beat some ranked D1 dudes in opened tournaments, as they where a very small D3 program. But they had some tough SOBs.I visited John Guira (A good friend and former opponent) at the TCNJ tournament in 1988 when he was coaching at NYU. I saw 3 dudes that where tearing through people...126 lber, 134 lber and their Hwt. Forget their last names but I remember hearing Chris, Scott and someone else. The heavyweight was some big Italian looking kid I never heard of ( nor the light weights), he mopped up the Rider Heavyweight who was ranked in D1, pinned the D3 NCAA runner up in less than a minute, then met Wayne Catan in the semis and took him into 2 rideouts, but locked his hands on top and lost 6-6, 1-0.I never saw anyone handle Catan like that before.Took him down twice and rode the hell out of him for 3 minutes. The 134lber took Bonomo into 2 overtime, but lost on riding time. Anyway...the ole days.Would be interesting to see the re-emergence of both Rutgers Newark, Kean and Montclair St.They had the Monacos, Pete Gonzalez, Pete the Greek. All great wrestlers that should have been D1.
