Rutgers off campus housing

My son and his buddies are looking to live off campus on Delafield. Is it safe there? Is it common for sophomores to live off campus? I know this is the football board, show an old guy some mercy and if anyone can shed some light I'd appreciate it.

I thought that was where one of the football led robberies occurred.

It's common and safe... New Brunswick is a safer town than the most think... The Rutgers part at least

It was a weed related robbery no? As long as he doesn't do anything stupid he should be fine

Best area is the space between college ave and easton ave for off-campus housing. Stay close to there and you'll be golden.

My daughter lived on Delafield her senior year (2013-2014) without incident. Junior year she lived on Ray Street, one house off Sicard, and her house was broken into while she was home alone. I almost think the houses closest to campus are targeted for robberies because it's almost guaranteed students live in them. She didn't live off campus until junior year but a good amount of sophomores did live off campus when she was living there.

Hearing this from various folks, thank you. rutino, hope your daughter was ok. My son lives in Mettlers where 2 kids were stabbed so hard to do much worse than that. Turned out there was a kid who was like an ambulance guy or something, basically saved one of the victims lives.

Delafield is a nice street. Living off campus is the best experience ever. Wish I did it since sophomore year.

Pro tip: Buy a house in New Brunswick, rent it out to your son and friends for the next 4 years.

She was fine, fortunately her boyfriend happened to come over during it and the guy was startled and ran off. These crimes tend to be random in nature, and as you pointed out can happen anywhere, the students need to keep their wits about them and be aware regardless of where they live. Living off campus can be a great experience. Just get a content insurance policy lol.

My son lives on Richardson and has friends on Delafield and Louis. He has not had any incidents (other than a robbery that was likely committed by an acquaintance of one of his roommates) but it's not like walking around in your hometown (assuming you live in a nice place). Any college campus is dangerous and New Brunswick is particularly so. I don't think I would feel comfortable with my daughter living on Delafield, so call me a sexist, but I would want my daughter closer to College Ave where the streets are more well lit and there is more activity.

Delafield is fine. Pretty much any street between the park and Somerset St is okay. I would avoid Plum and Harvey but that's about it. This notion that there are areas of Ward 6 that are very dangerous is so over blown, I have no idea where it stemmed from.

As a matter of fact, if you follow the Rutgers crime alerts, more incidents occur between Easton and College Ave than Easton and Hamilton/Somerset St.

Bottom line, you have to be smart. If you are out at 1:30am in a poorly lit area with your ear buds in walking alone, you are begging to be robbed. If you buy/sell drugs and people know, you are begging to be robbed. Yes, townies rob people but I have also firmly beleived for years that students rob other students a decent amount.
