What I’ve said for a bit now…
Match up > geography/market
Will be how it goes moving forward.
But it can only help out cause if we win.
Syracuse's problem is the demise of upstate NY.
Actually Maryland draws 1.8 million viewers every week… ranked #18 in CFB. This is the 2002 season only.
3x the average for RU. They have brought both carriage fees and eyeballs to the TV. We have only brought the former. Our viewership is beyond anemic. We have no following regionally let alone nationally. Need to change the perception….Win.
Jesus Christ.. do you think the people in Rutgers footprint watch more Big Ten football since we joined?
What's wrong with you "fans" that you have to crap on Rutgers whenever you can?
We are not getting the BROADCAST NETWORK games that run nationally or every widely regionally. Because we have not been in a good position to sell such a game yert. And that's our fault, yes.. but it does not mean that the general OP topic of number of people in our market means zero. It means a lot.. otherwise we would not have ben offered.
Now, I will admit, that ESPN advised the ACC to skip over Rutgers.. I think that was an effort to keep the NYC market for other games for other teams.. hoping they could destroy Rutgers football.. relegate it to Patriot League level.. where even having Rutgers on some lame channel playing Lafayette wouldn't interfere with a national game on a broadcast network.
But The Big Ten and their business analysts saw the value of Rutgers in this market. That has not changed. It is worth something.. it has a lot of value.
Heck.. for all I know Rutgers winning might screw that up. Where Rutgers is now they can push us off to odd times, off days, and periphery cable channels. Avoid having Rutgers fans in this big market NOT watching the Big Ten national broadcasts... not hurting their NYC and Philly market ratings which brings big money from advertisers.
But if Rutgers wins.. and they feel forced to use us for a national broadcast on a broadcast network.. they have the problem that the Rutgers football has little appeal has little value outside this market. Michigan vs Rutgers might not draw nationally even as much as Michigan vs Nebraska.
I still think the OP story has a lot of value. This is a huge market and we should be working in every well possible to cash in more on it.. including winning, of course.
