Here are actual football coach and football staff compensation figures for fiscal 2023 for all 16 public B1G schools. Figures for 2024 are are available for Rutgers. In 2024, Rutgers coaches and football staff hauled in $28,133,212. While numbers for all B1G schools are not available yet, I don't expect Rutgers to move up the rankings. Football program hyperinflation is happening across the power conferences.

Of course data going back to 1979 is not available. The fact is 2.0 football salaries cannot objectively called, "so f-in cheap." Greg 2.0 has all the $$ he needs for his staff and then some.

1 Ohio State $28,267,940
2 Michigan $26,658,364
3 Penn State $24,047,741
4 Rutgers $22,257,746
5 Michigan State $22,150,696
6 Iowa $21,443,220
7 Oregon $19,326,956
8 Wisconsin $18,847,243
9 Minnesota $17,799,387
10 Washington $16,922,430
11 Nebraska $16,684,289
12 UCLA $15,755,289
13 Illinois $15,549,228
14 Indiana $13,467,899
15 Maryland $13,380,006
16 Purdue $13,310,659
good grief -- how are we 4th?!?!

I saw something with a breakdown of the coaches and 62 support staff being in the $11-12 mil range. Add in Greg at around $6 mil and the number looks more like 18-19 mil, which would be middle of the pack.

Where did you see this breakdown?

In posts 9 and 24 of this thread, I provided concrete evidence of 2023 B1G football coach and football staff spending. Oddly, when I ask posters to defend figures they post, the posters often suffer sudden severe amnesia.

Here is a more detailed breakdown of 2023 football staff spending across the 16 public B1G teams. Numbers aren't available for Northwestern and USC because the schools are private and don't disclose their NCAA financial reports.

Yesrutgers01,

Thank you very much for posting the article. I appreciate you pointed to the source of your figures.

What could explain the gap between the $17.8 million salary budget implied by Sarge's piece and the audited actual figures for 2023 and 2024 disclosed in NCAA financial reports?

The actual amounts include benefits and non-salary cash compensation not included in the base salaries reported by Sarge. In addition, the 62 support staff figure undercounts actual support staff. Moreover, football coaches no longer coaching at Rutgers are getting paid.

Rutgers coaches and support staff receive benefits on top of their salaries. Plus, many coaches are paid bonuses. For instance, Greg earned $100,000 for making the Rate Bowl. For a basketball example, Pike pockets a $300,000 retention bonus on July 1, 2025.

Some assistant coaches, including Assistant Safeties Coach John Schiano and Assistant Quarterbacks Coach Matt Schiano don't show up on the support staff roster at all. These football coaches are football support staff nonetheless.

Former Rutgers defensive line coach Marquise Watson signed a deal last year paying him $100,000 plus benefits and bonuses even though, due to health reasons, he coached his last Rutgers football game in 2022 and currently coaches high school ball. No knock on Marquise - by all accounts he is a super person and coach. I wish Marquise the best in his recovery. Still, this is a Rutgers football cost.

The reality is the actual football staff spending is far higher than the amount arrived at by adding up figures in Sarge's report.
Numbers I provided in post #46 include : 1) actual amounts, not budgets, 2) audited and certified by university leaders, 3) calculated uniformly across schools, and 4) include all staffing costs for all football staffers, not just base salaries.

Thank you again for providing a link to your data's source.

I kind of take it all with a grain of salt.

The bottom line is that all these financial numbers are reported for agendas. And we all know that you can make numbers say whatever you want them to say for an agenda.

Those that hate the cost of football- need to just shut up and realize the positive football brought to the University. Rutgers is not a part of the B1G and that is huge for a University like us.
We have also just began to start putting some money in the right place to make this team successful. We have had 2 good years- and we can no longer say we are not paying coaches. So, now, Greg should have full accountability.

I do like keeping integrity, recruiting the right type of players who care about more than just football. Same with transfers in the Portal. I love trying to keep our good young men here and that most of them do stay. And to bring in kids with talent but also the right fit.

But- GS has to step up the game.

I agree Greg needs to step up his game. No more 7 win seasons. Need 8-12 wins to justify it all.

Good OT subject posted by Tango.

Your cost breakdown listed by school is very detailed and enlightening.

Some posters on the Board are sensitive about the subject and tend to be very critical of the conclusions.

What your data shows is that Sports Budgets are in an era of hyperinflation and no end in site for remedy.

However, financial reality of Sports Budgets will begin to collide with University Budgets.

Penn State (Big Ten School) announced that they may have to close 12 Branch Campuses (decision due in May) because of significant
drop in student body. Branch Campus opposition (community, faculty, students, politicians etc) to closing THEIR campus has been reported in the media for Fayette, Greater Allegheny and New Kensington campuses. Nobody wants their campus closed.

Pennsylvania media (aka Star Ledger) will be reporting Penn State has millions for Coaching salaries and $700 million for Beaver Stadium upgrade which will be used 7 times per year but not to keep branch campuses open (fair or not).

With the "Baby Bust Generation" just beginning to decimate University Budgets (student body loss) for the next 12 years these type of articles will continue.

Like the quote, Big Ten is writing articles for Star Ledger, who knew.

Closing campuses due to declining enrollment has nothing to do with financing the athletic department, wonder how much money Pitt will lose due to Clemson & FSU getting increases to stay on a sinking ship?

I realize this is a sports board and we are discussing sports budgets, but the money Pitt will lose (Total Picture) due to FSU and Clemson getting increases is actually INSIGNIFICANT when compared to the money Pitt receives yearly from Research Grant. Pitt is a mid sized university with a student body of about 34,000 students (10,000 grad and 24,000 undergrad).

The National Science Foundation (NSF) ranks Universities by Total R&D Expenditures: (Comparing Pitt, Florida State and Clemson).

Pitt ranked #17 with $1.398 Billion.
Florida State ranked #79 with $0.414 Billion
Clemson ranked #109 with $0.286 Billion

Florida State and Clemson will have to significantly increase their Research Expenditures to attain AAU memberships to attract the interest of Big Ten Presidents.

Consider how much money the entire Big Ten Sports Conference (18 schools) receives for a year compared to what Pitt receives per year for Research.

Spend millions to win a National Championship and spend more next year to win another.

At some point the perpetual motion machine will slow down.

Closing Branch Campuses because the University cannot afford to keep them open but spending a Billion Dollars trying to win a National Championship and upgrading a facility used just 7 times per year makes for an interesting story for the local media around the state.

Another thing I might point out is the public in general (fans) may be getting tired of the way college football is evolving.

I believe NIL and the Transfer Portal is turning off many fans who are tired of watching this circus.

As opposed to the past, because of NIL and Transfer Portal many current recruits have no loyalty to the school they are currently attending and are just temporary visitors.

I think this is reflected in this past years National Championship Game between 2 of the Highest Profile Teams Ohio State and Notre Dame. The National TV viewership for the game was down 12%.

Florida State and Clemson can put more money into their Sports Facilities and NIL while Pitt will put more money into building Research Facilities to attract more research dollars. There is more money to be earned in Research than Sports.

I enjoy watching a Pitt football game at Acrisure Stadium in the comfort of Club Seating.

In 2006 Rutgers football achieved a record of 11-2 (Ranked #12).

In about that same time frame President McCormick received a Salary of about $550,000 (base) and Greg received a salary of about $875,000 (base).

In 2024, President Jonathan Holloway received a Salary of about $888,500 (base) and $214,106 (bonus) and Greg will receive a salary of about $6,250,000.

Rutgers is not unique in this situation.

Football compensations are for the most part out of control and are only going to get worse with NIL and Transfer Portal.

As the "Baby Bust Generation" begins to decimate college budgets and college presidents go to the taxpayers for additional funding
these stories will continue to surface.

Which school will be the first to report that they will pay their new HC $50 million a year. LOL!!!!!

It's not just college football that is turning off fans. Seeing the non-stop revolving door in NCAA basketball rosters is also making a complete mockery of the term "college athletes".

LOL!!!!!

HAIL TO PITT!!!!!
Just because it annoys me when the fans of other schools want to get into our business and not the football being played.

You could have included your Pitt salaries and told the same story... 2006 - HC was at $650k and Chancellor much lower- couldnt find the number. And currently, Chancellor $950k and HC $6.9 mil

Agree, its not just Rutgers and Pitt but the whole college sports financial costs that have gone out of control (IMO) and will only get worse.
