I guess some folks will have to do some sole-searching, but ideally will make the security process a little less awful.

Nearly 20 years after airline passengers were first required to remove their shoes for security, the policy is being phased out. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is planning to allow passengers to keep their shoes on when they go through the general security line at many major airports across the country, two sources told ABC News. An unexpected memo went out to TSA officers across the country last week stating the new policy will allow all passengers to keep their shoes on in all screening lanes at many airports across the country, starting Sunday.

I flew a few weeks ago and hadn't flown since 2021.
At 430am we were walking thru TSA and I forgot to remove my shoes.
The agent said 'usually we would ask you to step to the side for further screening, but it's early so just remember to remove them next time.'

Not sure why initially forgetting but still removing them before I walked into the body scanner would trigger additional screening, but this news means...I WIN MR TSA AGENT BECAUSE THERE IS NO NEXT TIME WITH YOU! SUCK IT!**

It just baffles me how much the TSA security process differs between airports or what day you go thru the same checkpoint.

Even with TSA pre-check it is never consistent.
I flew to Denver to visit relatives and took a zip lock bag of a powdered drink I use after running. Flew out of Jackson with it no issues. Got ready to fly back from Denver and they pulled it out of my carry on and asked what it was and I told them. They said I had to dump it because it resembled narcotics. I told him to wet it and it would turn red and smell you know like a powdered fruit punch drink, he said nope. Definitely no rhyme or reason whatsoever. I hate flying now, do it only in an emergency

What baffles me is this screening process before you get to any terminal. Especially when many restaurants have real silverware and knives. Screening should be at each gate before you board, but I know that would probably be more chaotic.

Does this mean less waiting on the people who are too inept to navigate the security line at airports?

Seems like I'm always getting yelled at for either having my ticket out or not having my ticket out. Just pick one damnit. Or just roll out the face scanning everywhere and I can interact one less jackass who hates their job.

TSA is just there to make you feel safe.
TSA in 2024:
  • 6,678 firearms confiscated
    • 6,277 of these firearms were loaded (94%)
  • 2,102 unruly passengers were removed from airplanes
  • No fly list is now over 100K
  • Cameras in use have indentified active known sex and drug traffickers (data #'s confidential)

I haven't flown in so long can you wear a baseball hat on a plane now?
Yes, you can wear a hat.
Gone are the days where flying looked like a group of people about to go to the opera.

Overhead compartments also now close and lock, since having them be open was one of the dumber designs to implement on metal tube that violently shakes when there is turbulence.

They were confiscating weapons & removing unruly passengers at airports long before TSA existed.

I had the exact same thing happen to me on a flight from Memphis to Denver. I was headed out there to do some hiking, and I like to bring single-serving sport drink mix for the trails. I had a big canister of mix at home, so I made a few individual vacuum-sealed packs and put them in an empty water bottle in my carry-on. Well, my bag got flagged for additional screening by TSA, and they went straight for the water bottle. The agent started interrogating me about what could be in the packs and he had to test each one for illegal substances. I explained that if he opened them, they'd be useless on my hikes, and told him to just throw them away. They wouldn’t let me go until they tested every single pack. To top it off, he couldn’t dispose of them at the checkpoint. After tesing 10 or so packs, I had to gather everything up, find the first trash can and then sprint to my gate.

Even the nice restaurants past TSA have plastic knives. You will have metal forks and spoons but a plastic knife.

If you fly in or out of a regional airport they won't allow you to go thru security till your plane is on the ground.

Had a similar experience traveling with my wife, son and an unopened container of baby formula. They didn't throw it out, but they did hold us up for about 10 minutes while some moron cosplayed as a forensic expert and checked us all for signs of chicanery.

It's a colossal waste of money. Obviously, there needs to be some screening before you get on the plane. But it could be a lot simpler and faster. If you don't want people hijacking the plane like in 9/11, secure the cockpit.

The number of terrorist plot attempts foiled by the TSA remains zero. Let these ******* get back to flipping burgers already

Hmmm maybe, but maybe not all things we would consider as weapons after 911. Unruly passengers peaked in 2021 probably due to the anxiety of covid. I welcome the inconvienence and imperfections with TSA, but then again I have TSA pre-check lol. Glad they get more weapons off planes and remove more volatile passengers, like all law enforcement, I am certain they are underpaid. So maybe they are not shining examples of happy pleasant well wishers for you and your fam.

Biggest headache with TSA is the different requirements at every airport.
Take shoes off/leave them on.
Laptops/Ipads out of bag, no leave them in your bag.
Bag goes directly on conveyor belt. No, bag must go in a tote bin.
Shoes go in separate tote bin. Don't waste totes, put everything in one bin.

When my wife and I flew to Houston to pick up my son's ashes, the first wave of tsa at bush were insistent that I would need to open the urn up for them.

We had no luggage, and my wife was carrying his flag. I was a horrible mess. We were finally able to get a collective brain cell found that knew a legit way to check without opening the urn (which was intentionally not metallic so we could bring him home).

I'm glad that they did avert the incident that would have happened had they kept up with "you must open the container".

I am not disagreeing with you on this as I have no idea what you are even referring to. How do you post this sort of comment and not provide any context?

Say more, please.
Ok I'll do the work for you. Search 'Bill Clinton misses Bin Laden'.

False. I've set in ours and watched the plane arrive many times.
