No gimmicks from Salem, Blacksburg was completely incapable of slowing Salem even in a pouring rain. Game was 15-14 after the first quarter thanks to two long plays from Blacksburg but in the next 14 minutes Salem racked up 35 points and ended any hope for the Bruins. Other than those two long plays, Blacksburg was completely incapable of mustering any sort of offensive momentum the rest of the way, Salem played excellent D and didn't let speedy Blacksburg players get behind them and cause trouble. And if you think the rain made a difference then you didn't see Noah Beckley sling the ball for Salem. For every wobbly pass and drop for Blacksburg, Beckley was firing darts and placing the ball expertly all night and Salem's WRs had glue on their hands all game. Beckley also had 3 rushing TDs to go with his 2 passing TDs and this was the best he's been all year. De'Angelo Ramsey threw in a couple scores and had a very good night running the ball with Blacksburg's secondary needing 2-3+ guys to bring him down every time.

Very good effort from Salem today considering the circumstances. Blacksburg hung tough for awhile and they didn't seem to quit at all so kudos to them. That Beck is for real as well and Tyquest Terry was all over the field for them on D.

None of the Salem kids (Ramsey. Beckley, tucker, Robinson) run track. Wonder what they might run?

Ramsey 16 carries for 160 yards, 1 TD, 1 receiving TD
Beckley 11/15 for 204 yards, 2 TD, 6 rushes for 36 yards and 3 TD - super efficient game in pouring rain
Tucker 5 receptions for 104 yards and 1 TD

Salem D gave up 1 rush for 79 yards and 1 pass for 76 yards(each play oddly stopped at the 1 yard line), the other 45 plays Blacksburg had they got 95 yards and 3 first downs. Salem racked up 450 yards of offense on 55 plays with 21 first downs, scoring TDs on each of their first 8 drives.

Just about every rain game I've ever been to has had at least one let-up in the precip. Not the case tonight. It poured from the time I left the house until I got home. For someone wearing a still-newish rain jacket and just-purchased-today rain pants, I was pretty disappointed to be almost completely soaked by the end of the game. Transition areas weren't secure, I guess.

Fortunately, that was the only let-down on the evening for this Spartan fan. Salem's first team offense had the ball eight times, and scored eight touchdowns. Ball security was also excellent, as the first string didn't come close to turning it over in tough
conditions (aside from Beckley's one bobble, which he recovered). After those two early big plays by the Bruins, the defense didn't give up anything else until the second-team Spartan offense turned it over to Blacksburg deep in Salem territory. Blacksburg stuck with their strategy of onside kicking every kickoff (recovering one) and going for it (or lining up as if they were going for it - they actually kicked a few times) on every fourth down. I don't think they did themselves any favors, although it really didn't matter, as defenseless as they were.

Blacksburg is the most well-balanced, speed-laden offense Salem has faced since Amherst six weeks ago. The Bruins don't have the same beef and skill on the line as the Lancers, but the Spartan defense performed pretty well after an early slip-up, nonetheless. Also, there were no apparent injuries. Two weeks until PH comes a' calling.

Still giving up big gashing running plays. Concerning. Defense is inconsistent. Offensive line improving. Beckley really throws it well when he has a clean pocket. Great on roll outs. Will find out more against pH .
