Sherando managed to overcome the overwhelmingly bad juju of being down 20-0, not having fireworks at the game, some inadvisable pre-game smack talk, the new PA announcer being really weird, and Shruikan neglecting to order his pre-game lucky pizza. No matter what happens next week, no one can take away this region championship from these guys.

There’s a new PA there now? I thought the guy last season did a good job. Did he just retire from it?

No matter what happens next week?

Go beat Phoebus or Hampton is the idea.

No matter what the paper says, you can hand anyone an L.

Let them know they don’t want to repeat what they did last Sunday on IG this week…not a good idea

The guy tonight was someone different than usual. Not sure if the regular guy was out sick or away on Thanksgiving travel or something else. He kept saying "Warriors first down!" after punts and kickoffs and other stuff that came off as odd.

Region Championship Sherando Warriors! proved a lot of people wrong, over achieved and came back from adversity and proved it when it counted.

Man, these are the kinda games where I wish Salem still had a stream for their games. Would like to see the re run of this game and see what went well and what went wrong

Used to have a Facebook stream for Salem’s games where you could go back and watch it over again. I didn’t see the game this evening or hear it on the radio as I was celebrating Thanksgiving with fsmily.

Was too cold to sit in the stands so I mostly just wandered around. Went over to Salem's side a couple times. Was impressed with the amount of fans they brought.

I just got home an hour ago after a long day of attending two games (Briar Woods at Riverbend then Salem at Sherando) (late posting since Georgia Tech/Georgia was crazy).

Great game. Glad I got a good one to watch after the stinker I watched earlier in the day.

Real Feel Temperature with the Wind Chill was 25 Degrees at Kickoff. Great atmosphere and a good showing by both teams' fans.

Salem came out and punched Sherando in the mouth. But I have to give Sherando credit. They are truly resilient and they didn't lay down. They had a big defensive line that woke up and controlled much of the game and they had a quarterback who showed leadership.

For Salem, they didn't know what to think when Sherando finally made adjustments. Also, the plays with the quarterback throwing on the run didn't work out very well. Several drops and several poorly thrown balls didn't help either.

The big moment was the massive pass interference call on the third quarter. From a former official's viewpoint (that former official being myself), I thought it was a bad call as the defender was looking back to the ball and actually tried to reach for the ball to make a play. Add 15 more yards to that with another penalty and it didn't take Sherando long to finally take the lead.

In the fourth quarter, I wasn't quite sure what Salem's strategy was. Maybe they were trying to control the ball to keep it out of the hands of the Sherando quarterback? Either way, I agree with many of the posters. The clock management was horrid.

Best of luck to Sherando next week in their semifinal game. I'm off to bed because I'm taking in one more game this weekend coming up tomorrow and it's another mid-morning departure.

Before you said long ride and made me google distance I assumed yall were closer than 2.5 hours away. Thats one spread out region!
4B is pretty spread out too. I bet it took King George (which is the easternmost school in the district) at least 2 hours to get to Dinwiddie. It's probably about the same from King George to Varina. I remember when Varina was on the Battlefield District back in the 70s (Matoaca was too). The trips to Varina and Matoaca were long trips for district games and that was when traffic wasn't bad and you were actually moving at the speed limit the whole trip! Have a good one!

Looking at next season Salem will still have plenty of speed. The big question marks will be the quarterback and will the defense make improvements going into next year. My guess is yes as the guys on defense will have experience under their belt. Hope I’m right!

JV quarterback can play football. Tough kid. Almost a bit of a power runner. Excited to see him make the transition to varsity.

What contributed to Sherando victory?
1. They didn't give up and defensive line made some adjustments.
2. Missed call on Sherando player jumping center to block extra point. No call hugely effected outcome of game.
3. Terrible pass interference call and then unsportsmanlike penalty against Salem . 30 yard penalty that was a complete missed call .
4. Two Blown coverages by linebackers and secondary letting Sherando back in game.
5. Complete and utter mismanagement of clock at end of game. (Not using timeout with 20 seconds left).

Salem rarely adjusts, as everyone here says Salem is going to Salem. It works more than it doesn’t, I would love to see some adjustment when what there doing doesn’t work but Salem is going to Salem. One side of the D line broke contain so many times last night, going too deep on pass rushing, getting caught up inside a couple of Sherando drives came from contain being broken. Kudos to Sherando coach for capitalizing on it. Great year for Salem all in all, they made it as far as I thought they would, was skeptical mid season because of the lack of defense..

Were you at the game? I’m curious to see what you may have thought about the dude hurdling the lineman. I saw somewhere on a Winchester news article that the dude jumped over the lineman’s foot that was in the way of the hole and not his whole body. Idk as I wasn’t there

I saw it on a news post of a newspaper thing that I used to follow when I lived in Winchester

He literally hurdled the snapper. I’m not sure on the rules for high school(vhsl) in the nfl and college, the rule is you can’t make contact with the long snapper, so you can jump the snapper, but if the snapper raises a hand and touches you it’s a penalty, no contact, no penalty. Again, nit sure about vhsl. Maybe some ex or current refs can elaborate

Gotcha. Yeah I’m not sure what the rules are for VHSL either

Salem had a Jekyll and Hyde defense. Showed promise in some games and seemed to be clueless in in others. Unfortunately, Hyde Showed up against Sherando. Good luck next week.

The guy that hurdled the snapper bigger than ****.

Also a phantom chop block on a first down a Salem sweep.

Also several missed holding calls (to be expected)

Also Two phantom OPIs on both teams.

But I bet they cash that game check….

Sounds like a lot of bad calls. Honestly, I don’t think Salem or Sherando would’ve had much of a shot to get past Phoebus but it’s always a plus to get another week playing together

Didn't have a good angle to see if he completely hurdled the guy on the extra point. Coach Rohrbaugh said he didn't go directly over him, Salem's coach disagreed. Would like to see a replay if anyone manages to find any footage.

I agree that the PI call on Salem was bogus, but they didn't help themselves by getting the extra flag for unsportsmanlike. Giving up 15 yards on a penalty (right or wrong) is bad enough, can't be tacking on another 15. I can understand his frustration though lol.

That said, I did have a decent angle on the PI flag that went against Sherando and it didn't look like PI.

You may not jump over the lineman no matter if you touch the lineman or not. That was a huge no call. Both teams scored 4 touch downs. Chasing that point helped determine the game

Leave no doubt as Mags would say. Can’t put it into the hands of the refs. Salem had a good season but lost last night because they didn’t execute when they needed to. Plain and simple. You win some and lose some in life.

That's true. I listed earlier the reasons for the Salem loss. On a fairly long list are two terrible calls/no calls. Also on that list is poor clock management last 20 seconds.

Thats right southbottomU,

What’s your user name in reference to?

Have enjoyed your posts this season. Along with all the other Salem guys.
