Not disputing your post at all, but one thing to take in consideration: McBride had the advantage of being on teams that ran the ball well, dominated time of possession, and shortened the game for the defense.

This^^^ is something the vacuum stats on ppg is not taking into consideration, but it is VERY important.

Remember Cosgrove fielded a few top 25 defenses while the DC at Wisky. Why? Because they ran the ball, dominated TOP and kept games shorter and his defenses off of the field. Just NU did with our O.

When the games mattered in bowl games we were getting boat raced when our O was not dominating the TOP. What does that tell ya? Means ol MC B was not "all that" as a top DC as much as the poster ITT wants to make it out to be.

Yeah he EVENTUALLY figured it out, but it took a long time. This is also during a time period where teams were mot scoring as many points on the whole.

We didnt have an 85 limit for much of mcb's time, so there really wasnt any excuse as to why he couldnt have changed up his D philosophy sooner than he did.. that 83 game vs Miami against the Miami speed should have been the wakeup call and the change should have been made immediately after that since we were going to b playing FLA teams in bowl games with FLA speed. We had already been playing vs OU speed and not getting it done but the light still had mot come on.

So No those D stats about mcbride being a D god are not true when all things are considered and when we are not just looking at stats in a vacuum.

So Osborne is to blame. Wasn't he the one in charge? Isn't he the one that should have seen the light? I don't know know Osborne like Tulsa Tom does, in that we haven't had any fireside chats, but I don't get the impression that McBride could walk in January 2, 1984 and say hey TO we're switching to a 4-3 this spring and Osborne would say it's your defense do what you want. On the other hand, one can't assume that McBride and Osborne didn't have those conversations but decided to stay in the 5-2 anyway.

These decisions are complex and when all things are considered, you can't just look back at one decision in a vacuum.

Just stop...please. No need for facts to be thrown in here. We were GREAT on defense during those years. (Except for those who were actually fans during that time and remember how vilified Charlie AND Tom were.)

I've seen the light...

Man, Charlie sucked for years before he didn't suck! Who cares about where the rankings were! We should have fired him long before he became good...

Again, Cozgrove had a few top 25 defenses during his time at Wisky before he landed with Callahan at at NU. Does anyone realistically think he was a good to great D coordinator after his time at NU eas over? Remember the next year after NU he eas coaching high school.

Dont think so.

Oh, I agree!

I mean, a few top 25 finishes is different than 17 top 25 finishes, but you guys are right! Charlie sucked!

I'm on the bandwagon…
