This year is going nowhere. For 2010 we have almost $120 million of the same players already committed. That we fall off to "only" $96 million already committed in 2011 is of little consolation when the two main losses are DLee and Lilly, arguably our most consistent hitter and pitcher. The flip side is they will both be 35 when their deals expire and certainly won't command the dollars they had been getting. Finally in 2012 there is some light and some money to play with, presuming we don't hand out more ridiculous contracts like some of the ones we are carrying now....Soriano, Zambrano, Fukodome, Bradley and Dempster to be specific. So there you go, enjoy the return of the lovable (?) losers for the next two and a half years. Here's hoping the 2012 Cubs are the team to beat. By the way, 2012 is still only the next to last year of Soriano's contract. He had better stock up on cars and suits and houses. I bet $19 million won't buy nearly the stuff then that it will now.

but don't you think it's a little early to be writing an article like that from a Cardinals perspective?

It works out great for me because fall practice just started, so I can officially can the Cubs for the year and have something more important to move on to, college football. They hung around just long enough this year to help pass the summer for me and get me through to football. Thanks Cubbies.

And at this point, yes I was wrong. The Cards have turned it on to a level I didn't think they had, and the Cubbies rotation appears to be finally having an off period.

were going to fall apart anyway...I mean it's the Chicago Cubs! It doesn't mean the Cards couldn't play poorly down the stretch too.

I just hope they show up in October. The one thing they do have this year that they haevnt in the past few is pitching though. They just need to keep their foot on Boston's throat and wrap this thing up

Thanks to nearly 40 years of following State, the Saints and the Cubs, I am a perfect blend of both.

It is way too soon to declare anyone out of it, but the Cardinals do have a lot of things in their favor right now. The biggest series that I can see in the very near future is the Dodgers and Cardinals in LA. That will be a good chance for the Cubs to make up some ground. But, if the Cardinals can play well out in Chavez Ravine, they have a great chance to almost lock up the Central then.

They also need to stay healthy.

You know good and well that in the privacy of your own homes that you are already trying to figure out the playoff matchups and who you would rather play. You are just too scared to say it here on the off chance Pujols gets busted for PEDS and Carp blows out his arm and Soriano quits being a complete douchebag and the Cubs reel in the Cardinals with some miraculous six week run. You know that if you say it here and the Cubs catch them that me and Coach and long lost Jobu and Bruiser and EmoryBelland and rugbdawg and DawgatUSM and Tidrow will hold it over your heads for the rest of your lives so you two and 87 and Ace and Pujols and the others can relax. The Cubs are toast.
