Comparing Stoops to Schembechler is about like comparing Bear Bryant to Mack Brown. Uh no.
There could be several things to compare. The most obvious is that for half of Bo's career at Michigan, there was seldom anybody besides Ohio State that was worth a darn in the Big Ten. Michigan annually played a weak in conference schedule. and in those days, there were seldom more than two teams, occasionally three in the conference that were anywhere close to .500. And they didn't usually play much of a non conference schedule. In comparison to Bob, who not only faced a tougher conference regular season schedule, but also went 6-1 in CCG's. Bob would clearly have it tougher, but in different era's, hard to measure.
And forget that Bob played for sure in the NC game four times and won one. Bo never won an NC. I don't remember their playing for one. They might have in the infamous year of the 10-10 tie against Ohio State, I think in 1973. Migth have been 74. I could look it up. Bob's teams have been elite. And yes fans, making the final four is elite. Michigan did play several times against teams who were playing in bowl games for an NC. Never beat them.
But I thought a good way to measure would be their records against non conference teams who won 60% of their games or more. Bo's teams against those teams was 12-23. Bob's is 25-14.
I know people claim that Bob's teams have taken a step back in the last six years, but in those times, we faced home and homes with Florida State, Notre Dame and Tennessee. And went 5-1. The seasons where it fell off were mostly because of injuries that were tough to overcome.
Bo was a very good college HC. But he's not in Stoops' class.
