28-7 mitchell at the half on that game. Franklin gave up a long pass play right before the half

Been sometime since Franklin has been this down. It happens to all programs from time to time. The sign of a great program is how fast they bounce back

Franklin plays a lot of seniors, not convinced next year is going to be that much better for them. They will get back on track soon enough though either way, they have a program over there

Just shows how much better the teams from up north are. Mitchell and Heritage are both 4-1 with their only loss coming to Erwin. They beat Franklin like a drum. They are every bit as good as Murphy.

I dont think anyone had said otherwise

Nope, quite the contrary. Murphy posters have nothing but good to say about Mitchell. But, as the old saying goes, to be the man, you have to beat the man. And Murphy is still the man. Since dropping to small 1a, I think most folks consider Mitchell an annex of the SMC since we have played at least 2 teams a year since. I fear that if heritage doesn't drop to 1a by next realignment, Mitchell will be moved to the SMC. I wouldn't mind the competition, but the extra 15000 miles on my truck a year would be no bueno lol.

NCHSAA does some crazy stuff but I dont even think they would do that to yall. Travel would just be to much of a hardship

I would be surprised if that move would happen. Its one thing to travel for a few football games but when you start thinking about all the other sports, it gets crazy.

I know it seems farfetched, but they are bound and determined to eliminate split class conferences. Mitchell is pretty much 2-2.5 hours away from the 3 closest 1a conferences; the SPC, SMC, and MVC...

I would like to see the 1A members of the WHC go to the SMC in football, with the LSMC added in for Smoky East and Smoky West conferences in other sports. This was the set up when Polk and Hendo were in the SMC late 90s/early 2000s and I think it would be beneficial because 1) a large football conference would help with non conference scheduling problems and 2) people wouldn't be able to complain about the seeds the Little Smoky schools get in hoops playoffs.

Probably something like:

SMC West: Hiwassee Dam, Murphy, Tri County, Andrews, Nantahala, Robbinsville, Hayesville, Highlands

SMC East: Swain Co, Cherokee, Blue Ridge, Rosman, Polk Co, Mitchell Co, Avery Co

Guys, I don’t think it will happen. Many problems arose from the inclusion of Polk and Hendersonville. Here were a few of them:

Increased travel time and more missed class time.
Increased travel cost.
Some schools have 7th-9th grade Football, others have 9th & 10th.
Schools such as Nantahala, Tri County, Highlands, Blue Ridge and Hiwassee Dam don’t field teams in many sports. They hope to field a team, schedule other teams and then fold it.
In sports other than football do you mandate east west scheduling.
The west would face decreased revenue in sports such as basketball. Nantahala will not bring 10% of the crowd Cherokee does.
The LSMC will object because in the sports they participate in they would have to give up guaranteed playoff bearths and a certain top seed due to a 1st place finish.

I think it is more likely they would add Rosman to the WHC teams and keep the Smokies as they are.

I dont think a SMC East-West will happen either but Id like to see it happen. More likely Rosman leaves like you said but I hope they don't. What would/will happen to the conference if Murphy and Andrews ever combined? Murphy/Andrews would probably be a small 2A school. They would almost have to make the SMC a split 1A/2A league with Franklin and Smoky joining along with the Murphy/Andrews school. Unfortunately I still think Murphy and Andrews will eventually combine. It may be 20 years from now when they do but one day its coming. It was fought off this time but it will come up again eventually.

If the Murphy/Andrews union ever comes about I think the state will add them to Franklin, Smoky and Brevard and form a 2A league.

The proposal was for there to be a high school in Ranger and one in Andrews, but it got shot down. If that ever happened, I would bet 75 to 80 % of current Murphy kids would g to the west school added in with approx 200 from HD for a total of 575 ish, while maybe 25% would mix in to Andrews' 250 or so giving the east around 375.

But I could also see more kids going to TCEC if there wasn't a high school in Murphy. Speaking of which, there has also been some talk of TCEC getting a new building...if they get a gym will they expand their athletic department?

The proposal was never going to pass because having the east high school in Andrews was idiotic. If and when it ever happens it will only be if a whole new school is built in Marble area. And as far as Tri County goes even if they get a gym there probably not going to have the athletes to ever be competitive in anything besides the country club sports.

Think the school board has decided to keep the three high school system intact and consolidate many of the primary schools into a new school in peachtree after the tech -early college building gets built there in stage 1

dont think they decided to consolidate any schools besides oaks academy and the early college. Although Martins Creek definitely needs to go, not enough students to justify it.

I’m satisfied with no consolidation. We have a very large spread out County. It might happen eventually but most all the native people that’s lived here all their lives will fight it.

Murphy elementary is busting at the seems.
They've hire new teachers for the class sizes. Murphy will be forced back into their playoffs before consolidation. About 5 years from now and gentry wont be able to do anything about it. I assume he knows this and will retire by then

That's good to hear BK. My wife teaches at Murphy Elementary and she doesn't know of a single new position at the school. There are about 75 kids divided into 4 1st grade classes, about the same as every other class there. But hey, if the Graham Gazette, aka BK, says they are hiring new teachers, must be so. Oh wait, maybe Gentry decided to start busing kids out of the elementary school. SMH.
