Season tickets sales stagnant? Bloom off the rose?

Is seems season ticket sales have leveled off?
According to the article they are even down slightly from last year.

Is the bloom off the HC Schiano rose?

(Note - no idea how I read the article. The link in the tweet to NJ.com is paywall. But if you search Google I got it through that weird AMP thing that I don't understand.)

Even if true, it's obnoxious that NJ.com and the SL put these pieces out during opening week every year. Beyond the fact that no one should be surprised given the stagnation the last 2 years, how does this help anything? Does pointing out that Rutgers Football games aren't a destination get people to games? Or is that the point?

I sympathize with you, but I don't think it's as uncommon as folks around here think for the local press to be antagonistic.

It seems that every time I am trying to irrationally defend Maryland, my debate opponent cites an article or series from the Washington Post or the Baltimore Sun buttressing their position (and, sadly, for me, they are usually well-researched, ha ha)...

It makes sense to run an article like this just as interest in football is coming back. Given how bad the team has been for so long it's amazing even 21K buy season tickets. Rutgers should be glad for that amd of course can't expect interest until the team provides a better product.

They start taking ST deposits in December of the year prior. Payment plans finish up in June. They'd have a good idea as to YOY pacing by the first week in July. Conversely, they also sell pro-rated ST packages starting with the 2nd or 3rd game each year. Let the numbers finalize. Either in July or after season ticket sales have stopped completely would be more appropriate IMO. Not 4 days out from the opener.

It is not only the losing, but the failure to develop B1G quality QBs have meant the games have been pretty boring as well. And losing and boring are a deadly combination for attracting crowds for any sports team at any level. We have been going to these games forever, so we reup on our season tickets every year, but for my wife anyway, I know it is not because she has that much of an interest in the product on the field for the reasons mentioned prior, it is more to catch up with old friends we don't necessarily see outside of the football games. Hopefully, this season begins the turnaround, hope springs eternal.

Is it the function of the Star Ledger to help Rutgers sell tickets? Maybe, they view it as the week before the season starts interest is at a high for RU Football, so it's a good time to run the article.

Well at least the games will be shorter this year. Probably the biggest competitive advantage RU gainssince they should be less worn down at the end of games/season.

Didn't I just recently read in an Athletic article that RU averaged 53K per game last year? That figure must have been a ton of giveaways that did not make it to the game or there was a transposition issue (not uncommon in the Athletic) and it should have read 35K.

Need to adjust down the 53k number for a fair comparision.
I remember seeing it in a prior thread from a prior year.

10k go to visting team
2k(?) to friends and family
Some other standard deductions of ticket blocks.

The number of "available" tickets for sale is much less than 53k when looing at the 21k number.

Hell they may show up if they lose if the offense isn't a disorganized mess and is actually fun. Losing is one thing, but losing while being boring is fan repellent. I'd rather lose with a sexy offense like 35-31 than lose 13-10 and have the game be a visual root canal.

Yup. When you look at the amount of sellable inventory, our building is more than half-filled with STHs. Back out 10K for students, another 2K for visiting team, maybe 1000 combined for recruits and player family. You’re left with about 18,000 seats to move per game.

From experience my group has shrunk dramatically since ash took over. Finally there might be light at the end of the tunnel after this year but I really can't blame people for not wanting to invest their time and money on the product we have been given. Hopefully we can start winning and being competitive against everyone and the bandwagon fans will come back.

First time since graduation (2005) I don’t have season tickets.

Just had enough of wasted Saturdays sitting through terrible football for 4 hours.

The best part of game days is getting together with friends…I can certainly still do that.

Hopefully they improve on the field, and then we’ll improve in the stands.

We were up to 8 now down to 4 and no longer willing to recruit new people. I no longer ask friends to go and join us as I've gotten "No Thank you" way too often. If we ever get good those people will want tickets again.

Considering everything* I think 21,000 season tickets is pretty good.

* recent performance, home schedule with a lot of uncompetitive games and bad dates and/or game times, bag policies, etc.

How do our ticket sales compare to other Power 5 football programs in the doldrums? We are #54 in this article that covers 133 teams. We are sandwiched by Cal and Arizona. We are better than Syracuse and Illinois and Boston College and Northwestern and Maryland.

Same story as Mike Marc...first time in 18 yrs I didn't get tix...will still be at the game for tailgating/bonding...other than the Louisville game there has never been a game where u couldn't pick up tix in the lot for face or less than face value. They need to WIN me back. Like some of previous posters I want to see something akin to the 2005-10 era...ill even settle for the Kyle Flood teams. I want to be entertained and have something to cheer for and not just the punter...lol....for the record I'm a GS guy, so I'm hoping for measurable progress this yr...

Anyone know the # of season ticket holders in the last year of Schiano 1.0?

Best I can find is there were 31,168 in 2015 that dropped to 16,585 in 2019. Then came no crowds in 2020. Agreed with the posters that winning changes everything, along with an offense that can score points, even in a loss. I want to see a competitive game well into the 3rd quarter.

Even 13-10 means that you're in the game (most likely). We ended with beatdowns by State Penn and Maryland, and a late October beatdown by Minnesota.

Season ticket holder on and off since 1991, have them for this year. I am hoping/expecting that we start to win this year or next year.

I'm a Schiano guy and know that Ash really buried the program to Terry Shea levels of bad. I just hope we can climp a must steeper hill. A couple of 7-5, 8-4 seasons and the stadium will be rocking.

RU has “sold a total of 21,260 season tickets" for the 2022 season, a "6.2% increase from the 20,050 it sold in the 2021 season and a 26.1% increase from the 16,863 it sold in 2019 season.



That was an objective piece from another publication written last year. It’s convenient today for NJ.com to go back only to 2020 to fit their agenda.

Same story here. Our group was once 9. I dropped mine this year, and now there are only 2 left. The worst part is, I'm not even upset about it. The program has lost me.
