I was slightly surprised at our 2nd place finish in defense but was REALLY surprised at how poor our offense was... I have been wathcing a MSU offense that has had me thinking we were much improved.... what's the deal here?

We left a lot of points on the field this year.Despite the fact that the Florida offensive gameplan was great we only got a single touchdown. We should have got 2 more though. Same with our game against the Mississippi Yankees.

We were flat bad offensively against Alabama, LSU, Florida.
We were mediocre against Auburn, Georgia.
We were pretty good against Kentucky, Arkansas, Mississippi.

Apparently, that all adds up the 11th most efficient offense in the league.

Defensive stats are great. Offensive stats really not that surprising.

Our offense was more about ball control and sustained scoring drives; NOT quick strikes down the field - which is what this stat rewards.

I'd be much more interested in a scoring efficiency stat that shows percentage of drives that resulted in points. I'd be willing to bet that we come in closer to the middle of the pack in that stat.

But look how big the gap is between #11 MSU and #12 Vandy. It's freaking huge. Vandy only scored 10 TDs in 8 SEC games, and they got 4 against Mississippi.

That stat is touchdowns/number of plays. We were not a "quick strike" team with a lot of big plays. Sure, toward the end of the season we started hitting for some big plays in SEC games (e.g. Arky and TSUN), but most of the season against SEC teams we were running the ball, putting together long drives and using up the clock. It's simply just another way of looking at offensive efficiency.

It measures offenses based on how quickly they score, i.e. how efficient they are. That is certainly not our forte, at least not now. It doesn't surprise me at all that we are next to last in scoring efficiency with our grind-it-out game.

We aren't exactly a quick strike offense, which according to them seems to equal efficiency. Unless we're playing Ole Miss, we were basically a grind it out offense, we just do it from the shotgun formation. Being second in the conference in rushing (and minus a Heisman qb) means it's going to take us a while to move the ball down the field. We also faced more third downs than any other SEC team and were second in time of possession per game.

/I got my stats off the SECsports site which includes all 12 games.

Technically they only got 3 offensive TDs against us. One was a pick 6. Two of those offensive TDs were 1 play drives.

I'm shocked that we aren't dead last in defensive efficiency. If any defense has ever been quick strike in its ability to give up a TD in a heartbeat, it was ours this year.

On your team, you won this year with defense and controlling the football (not turning it over). If Mullen tried to do too much with Relf, you were going to pick 6 your way out of a couple wins most likely. He figured out his personnel and did a good job coaching around their deficincies. The only down side was when you got down big in games against Alabama and LSU, you weren't built to come back, but outside of those two games, you were able to avoid getting down big with your ball control/defense strategy. If Diaz is around next year, I'm going to be curious to see if he can do it again.

Right now I'm impressed with him, but he's going to have a few key personnel changes to deal with. If he can do it again, I'll be even more impressed.

not the quick strike. That also helped our D play alot fewer plays this season.

As many of us know, our offense will continue to get better- we improved from last season to this one, and we will be better next year. We really need a deep threat at WR that has some size. That is really hurting us.

I know we might have slightly better stats, but when you consider the Ds we played in 09 and the Ds we played in 2010, our stats should be better. Look at the difference between Bama in 09 and Bama in 2010, same with Florida, plus no GT in 2010. Also, the SEC was the highest scoring conference in America this year. So, the D's we played obviously weren't that great, but several sure shut MSU down.

I stand by my point that if we would have lost the Florida game 16-13, everyone would have bitched about our offense all year. That win kept people quiet on how bad we were offensively.

Relf has played better the last few weeks, but was it really Relf improving, or does it just show how terrible Ark and OM's D is? At the time, I think Ark actually held us to under their SEC average for points, even though the game went into double OT.

I'll be interested to see how Relf plays in the bowl game, especially if it's against FSU or VT. If it's the Relf that played against Bama, LSU, Auburn, and Florida, then I'm afraid my theory about Relf putting a celing on MSU in 2011 will be right. If he lights them up through the air and on the ground, then great maybe Atlanta is a realistic goal in '11.

Well saidCoach. I amexcited that the bowl game gives us a lot of extra practice. I'm hoping that the extra bowl practices along with spring training will allow us a lot of reps for Relf/Russell/Favre throwing the ball. Also more reps for the wideouts. We've got tokeep improving the passing game to keep defenses honest. That allows us to win with the running game.

1. Ok- Fla and Bammer's D werent quite as good this season- we didnt score an offensive TD against either last season. We did in 2010
2. Ga Tech was 54th in defense- giving up 360 yards/game last year- it's not like they were dominant
3. What about the fact that maybe it was our WR's finally getting open against UPig and Mississippi? I remember seeing alot of WR's locked down vs Bama's 1st defense with some drops that killed drives.
4. Atlanta is not a realistic goal in 2011. LSU, Bama, and UPig all have more talent than we do and will return just as many starters. And we will still not have a bona fide SEC #1 WR
5. Whatever Ralph's ceiling is, we will have to live with it in 2011 because he will be the QB.
