As we move into the last weekend, one of the things we are playing for is seeding in Hoover along with Bama, Florida, Ole Miss, Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. (Of course it's not the most important thing, but the competitor in me still wants us to finish as high as we can in the SEC.)

Let's say we sweep Missouri to go to 15-15. Big if after this past weekend for them, but let's start with that premise.

Bama 15-12 at Florida 13-14
We have the tiebreaker over Bama, but not over UF
If Bama sweeps or goes 2-1, we jump Florida
If Florida sweeps we are tied with Bama and win the tiebreaker
If Florida wins series 2-1, we don't pass Bama, end up tied with Florida and they have the tiebreaker - so worst case is this one.

Auburn at Ole Miss 14-13
Tiebreaker over Ole Miss
If Auburn sweeps, we jump Ole Miss
If Auburn wins 2-1, we tie with Ole Miss and have the tiebreaker
If Ole Miss wins the series, we cannot pass them

Kentucky 13-14 at Vandy
Tiebreaker over Kentucky
If Vandy wins the series, we jump Kentucky
If Kentucky sweeps, we cannot pass them
If Kentucky wins the series 2-1, we tie and have the tiebreaker

Texas at Oklahoma 13-14
OU has tiebreaker over us
If Texas wins the series, we jump Oklahoma
If OU wins the series 3-0 we cannot pass them
If OU wins the series 2-1, we tie and they have the tiebreaker

Tennessee 15-12 at Arkansas
The only thing that helps us here is an Arkansas sweep. No head to head tiebreaker to apply if we are tied with the Vols at 15-15 so it comes down to all of our common opponents. It's also likely there would be at least one other 15-15 team in there as well.

I guess our best case is to cheer this weekend for Auburn, Vandy, Texas, and Arkansas while hoping that the Bama-Florida series doesn't end up 2-1 Florida then let the tiebreakers fall where the may.

FYI the tiebreaker rules are:

  • 1. Two-Team Tie. The following procedure will be used in the following order until the tie is broken:
    • A. Won-lost results of head-to-head competition between the two tied teams.
    • B. Won-lost percentage of the two teams against all common opponents
    • C. Won-lost percentage of the two teams versus the highest seed using common opponents only (and proceeding through the last seed, if necessary)
    • D. Best cumulative winning percentage of all Conference opponents
    • E. Coin flip by the Commissioner.
  • 2. Three-Team Tie (or more). The following procedure will be used in the following order until the tie is broken: (Note: If the three tied teams have three different records against each other, they shall be seeded in best-percentage order.) Otherwise, once the tie has been reduced to two teams, the two-team tiebreaker procedure will be used.
    • A. If all tied teams are common opponents: Total won-lost percentage of games played among the tied teams.
    • B. Won-lost percentage of the tied teams against all common opponents
    • C. Won-lost percentage of the tied teams versus the highest seed using common opponents only, and proceeding through the lowest seed, if necessary. In the event of multiple ties, they shall be broken from first to last (e.g. a tie for first place will be broken before a tie for fourth place).
    • D. Best cumulative winning percentage of all Conference opponents.
    • E. If three or more teams still are tied, the Commissioner will conduct a draw.

"Auburn" Easy to cheer for whomever is playing the azzholes from The University of Northern MS

"Vandy, TX, and Arkansas" Haven't and won't ever pull for these 3 baseball teams, EVER. If they are playing the
azzholes from the University of Northern MS, I will pull for thunderstorms of biblical proportions so they can't play.

We'll just have to win our way in instead of me pulling for those 3

Thanks! I went through the same exercise this morning but was too lazy to type it all out. I'm not wanting Arkansas to sweep. But I'm definitely wanting Tenn to lose every game. A tough position for sure.

We don't want to finish 9th and take another RPI hit playing Missouri a fourth time.
So far, this is the clubhouse leader for the most MSU possibility. Start the SEC tournament "safely" in the field, but then a horrendous loss to Mizzou pushes us out when we could have afforded losing to any other SEC school. I guess the most MSU possibility would be another mizzou game hurting our RPI enough to push us out even with a win, but surely that's not possible.

If you are not top four seeds you are not winning it. They will be pitching Friday night guys and any team that gets to them will probably be pitching mid week guys. That tourney is set up to make it easier for the teams with the best records win the SEC tournament and to help teams needing a win to get into the NCAA. If you are on bubble playing the first rounds will not be that bad. It is there to help you.

The tournament schedule is a little strange if you look at when games are played starting with the quarterfinals.

Four games on Tuesday and Wednesday, like normal. But then only two games are played on Thursday, two games on Friday, two games on Saturday, and one game on Sunday.

Why spread it out so much at the end? I‘m guessing it’s a TV decision. Some will say it gives you more of a buffer in case of rain delays. But I feel like they could’ve held off and not started this thing until Wednesday. Or started on Tuesday and finished up on Saturday.

I think it's a very good decision. Sure, if there's no rain at all for 5 days you could play the tournament Wed-Sun or Tue-Sat. But what are the odds of that in May? Also, this takes away the chance a team might have to play 5 games in 5 days. At least now it's 6 days to play 5 games.

With us winning and Kentucky and Oklahoma losing we are currently in a three way tie for 11th, which I believe we would win. Moving up any higher than 11th is going to require us sweeping and at least one of Bama/UF (they are playing each other) or Ole Miss to lose out. I believe 9th is our ceiling.

Yes, unless you end up playing Missouri or USC and losing in the first round. We are in the tournament even if we lose the next two at Missouri and lose the first one in Hoover. We might be last 4 in, but we are in.

If we can sweep and finish 15-15, and get three wins in Hoover (beating a good team in the third game) we might have a chance at a low 2 seed somewhere. It would take winning our next 5+ games to get that change though, and it won't happen.

At this point, it would be nice for Ole Miss to lose their next 2 to Auburn so we can finish tied at 15-15 with them and jump them with the tie breaker. Wouldn't it be nice in a year we fired our coach for poor performance to still finish ahead of those bastards?

Friday morning update

Texas is the 1 seed
Seeds 2-7 in some order will be Arkansas, LSU, Vandy, Georgia, Auburn, Tennessee - we cannot catch any of them
Seeds 14-16 are locked in as A&M, South Carolina, and Missouri respectively

Seeds 8-13 are in play between Ole Miss, Bama, Florida, us, Kentucky, Oklahoma

Remember the info below is based off us SWEEPING Missouri and getting to 15-15. Last night was a decent start in that direction. If we lose one, that limits us to the 10-13 range. W-L records are updated.

Bama 15-13 at Florida 14-14 (Florida won game 1)
We have the tiebreaker over Bama, but not over UF
If Bama sweeps or goes 2-1, we jump Florida
If Florida sweeps we are tied with Bama and win the tiebreaker
If Florida wins series 2-1, we don't pass Bama, end up tied with Florida and they have the tiebreaker - so worst case is this one.

Auburn at Ole Miss 15-13 (Ole Miss won game 1)
Tiebreaker over Ole Miss
If Auburn sweeps, we jump Ole Miss
If Auburn wins 2-1, we tie with Ole Miss and have the tiebreaker
If Ole Miss wins the series, we cannot pass them

Kentucky 13-15 at Vandy (Vandy won game 1)
Tiebreaker over Kentucky
If Vandy wins the series, we jump Kentucky
If Kentucky sweeps, we cannot pass them
If Kentucky wins the series 2-1, we tie and have the tiebreaker

Texas at Oklahoma 13-15 (Texas won game 1)
OU has tiebreaker over us
If Texas wins the series, we jump Oklahoma
If OU wins the series 3-0 we cannot pass them
If OU wins the series 2-1, we tie and they have the tiebreaker

Is there a scenario where we get the 8 seed? I am not seeing it myself. The biggest problem is we’d have to pass both Bama and Florida and they are playing each other.

Ole Miss is about to win and that is going to take the 9 seed off the table for us.

Bama beat Florida so we can no longer pass Bama either. Need them to beat Florida again tomorrow (and us win) for us to pass UF.

Kentucky lost so we are a full game ahead of them.

Keeping an eye on this Oklahoma-Texas game. Texas leads by 1 in the 6th, a loss by OU moves us a game clear of OU too.

Yeah it looks like it’s going to come down to Alabama/uf tomorrow. Bama wins and we are the 10, UF wins and we are the 11 correct?

I think we finish third in a three way tie with Oklahoma and Florida… So we need one of them to lose tomorrow to move out of 12th. If that doesn’t happen, we are playing Kentucky in The 12/13 game.

Florida and Oklahoma didn’t play so it would go to record vs common opponents.
But just did the math and you are right. We would have the worst record vs common opponents. (OM, SC, Bama, Missouri and UT)

need to pull big for roll tide and Burt orange tomorrow.

With a win tomorrow it’s pretty straight forward:

Win + OU and UF both win = 12 seed playing Kentucky
Win + either OU or UF loses = 11 seed playing A&M
Win + OU and UF both los = 10 seed playing SC
