They make the case that Winston could have been easily identified as early as the day the report was filed. He wasn't identified until over a month later when his accuser called the investigator with his name.

There is a difference between a mishandled police investigation and letting a guilty suspect off the hook. If the NY Times had done a better job with their own investigative reporting, that distinction would be have been particularly apparent in this case.
