Bill Self's postgame comments after the beatdown last season:

Note the humility and the willingness to go back and make changes compared to Cal. He also didn't attack the fans.

Based on how the season turned out, it appears Self's introspection was prophetic.

I don't even need to watch it. We all know what the problem is. Our coach hit a brick wall, and decided to change absolutely nothing. The game didn't change. Just ask him.

He’s Shady but damn Self is the best in the business….

I think part of the game is seeing how far you can push things now. Just how it is. Look at how much success UNC was able to cheat their way too. Just part of the game.

If you’re not good at pushing the envelope that’s part of the problem. Barnhardt is unwilling to get his hands dirty.

I posted recently to find who was 2nd best on the business because Self is clearly the best. Most wanted to argue. It's not arguable.

To clarify most Kansas fans opinion of whether Self cheats: UK DUKE and UNC are protected by the NCAA sponsoring body of NIKE. KU on the other hand is dealing with Adidas. NIKE would love to see Adidas get out of the shoe business in basketball. Hence why KU is still being under investigation by the NCAA.

Biggest difference, Self coaches to make Kansas the best team. Cal coaches to change players lives and their families lives. If UK happens to win along the way it's a side effect.

When Cal coached to win games he did. He took UMASS from nothing to the penthouse. They returned to nothing after he left. He took Memphis from nothing to the penthouse. Look at them now. They even hired Tubby thinking he could coach. Only to find out it was Ky, not Tubby.

Cal turned over a new leaf when he got here. It was now "players first" for him from now on. He talked it, he walked it and we reveled in it. The marriage and honeymoon was glorious.

Now it's over. Players first is not so grand when you only have one first round guy a year. Looks a lot different, I agree, when you have 4-5 first rounders and a couple 2nd.

Nah, I just wanted to screw with your handle; it was just too easy. And you're a fan of an opposing team, so I'm gonna give you some. TBH, I really don't care, but hey, it's fun. Don't spank us too hard in a couple of weeks.
I like our chances at home against Kansas. Cal and Oscar won't have any trouble getting the rest energized for this game... KU won't be overlooked like South Carolina was.
KU fans can't feel too good about playing in Rupp... especially after last year and despite how we have played so far this season.

Amazing. Self finally wins another championship & perspective on him instantly changes. Lol..ok. Fickle minds.

He would've been run out at UK before he ever got the 2nd. Don't forget that.

Mitch if you are not going to hire Pitino then hire Self. Let’s get this thing moving. Forget about the past. Cheating is legal now. Do this.

For me, it's much more than that. (at least when comparing him to Cal)
He is complimentary of Kentucky... he understands who we are.
He gets more out of lesser players.
They score at a high percentage on inbound plays near their basket.
They adapt during the game, especially over halftime.
They have senior nights for guys that sit early and then end up All-Americans and POYs later. (he either develops players or picks the late bloomers better than most)
And, he inherited a significant deficit to UK and UNC in all-time wins... and then overtook us.

As a college basketball fan, I respect Kansas... after all this fan board and our arena is named after a Kansas player. There was a stretch where I didn't care for several of their thuggish players, and that seems to have passed.

To get back to the OPs question... there are lots of better coaches than Cal... Self is one of them.

Let's be honest. Rupp will not be in the top 5 of Hostile environments for KU this year.

Starting this Saturday, KU's next 8 games are against 6 Top 25 teams and the 2 that aren't ranked were preseason top 5. They will be used to the pressure

Self has won the regular season B12 every year that he's been there except one. Cal has won the SEC twice since 2015 and no tournament wins since 2019 and, well, we know the bad numbers by now. And Self didn't have a problem winning during the Covid year so we can put that excuse to bed.

Consider this: When Roy left KU for UNC there was one person that our interim AD wanted to be our next coach. It was Bill Self. Rumors had it that Calipari lobbied for the position but KU politely said thanks but no thanks.

7 years ago I would have hyperventilated laughing at this thread, I thought Cal has skyrocketed past Bill Self and Self would never be in Cal's league again. A good coach, but not a great one.

Funny how time changes things. They aren't in the same universe currently.

He has also never been lower than a 4 seed in the tourney while at Kansas.

Dude my daughter goes to Kansas, I’ve been to that ******** town and I mean ******** many times, beautiful Campus but if you don’t have purple hair/tatted face/piercings all over your face your the odd one. Self is in my opinion top 5 bench coach But that program, I know for a fact is a renegade program as the players can literally do anything they want on campus and many do just that..
My daughter has said many times if her and her friends are at a party and the players show up they immediately leave, fact It’s that damn bad.

Self is an excellent good coach. But let's not pretend he hasn't had his share of really bad NCAA Tournament losses.
