Sellers is coming back. No one has thoughts?

A certain poster I completely trust said his "sources" said the decision isn't until the 15th. So I was taken by surprise.

But I have mixed feelings. Briles has run a run-heavy offense, and a pass-heavy offense, so its hard to say he fits Briles offense.

I am very curious to see what Sellers can do under a different coach.

I hope there is an open competition in the spring. But better to have the option than not.

A run heavy offense is perfect for Sellers, right? Get him in some packages that utilize his legs like last year, then spread the defense with Harbor.

Article on the front page says he’s nearing a decision. What did I miss?
You didn’t miss it. ESPN has an article that says the same thing:

South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers is nearing a deal to return to the school for 2026, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel.

Sellers has indicated to his coaches he'll return for his redshirt junior season, and the sides are expected to finalize a deal soon.”

They went to great lengths to entice him because he was recently withdrawing from personal contact with people the program. I think it will be a positive thing.

I think this is a good thing. BTW I was in the camp that was perfectly okay with Sellers going pro and giving Cutter Woods a shot. I think it’s good to see Sellers not run away from this past season and come back and show loyalty to the team. He’s a competitor and might thrive next year.

If, with a big if, we could manage strong rushing attack, it would be awesome for Sellers. Id love to see him hand off, hand off, then hit teams with play action long balls. Then throw in the occasional qb keeper and it would be a nightmare for defenses.

I just don't think we can wave a wand and suddenly have a string rushing attack.

So, Briles can go either way. The big question, imo, is what he installs based on the players we have on hand.

The problem with his behavior is that he may have damaged some relationships. Sometimes relationships can be more important than the actual play on the field. Hopefully he hasn't broken trust in a way that has alienated him from his teammates. I actually think he needs to come back to improve his draft stock, and show he can be productive in a good system.

No need to announce on the 15th when your new OC let the cat out of the bag yesterday.

I'm glad he is coming back .... multiple OC's for this young man and none as accomplished as our incoming OC and with the track record of adjusting the offense to the talents of the QB (and this young man has talent and he is very humble), I am excited about his return. IMHO, we greatly need a very good RB with size (see Sanders) and a great deal of defensive talent ...

Of course, of course. That's what my "sources" said too. :)

I would have credited you with quoting the correct poster this time, but you immediately followed this post by screwing it up again.

He was mediocre this year. He was awesome his first year. Hopefully Briles can help him return to that form.

I’m glad he’s coming back. He didn’t have a great year, but I still think 90% of that is on Shula for trying to make him something he isn’t. If Briles puts him in a position to play fast (not necessarily up-tempo, rather plays that develop faster or moves him around vs being a pro style pocket passer) I think the majority of the folks will be glad he’s back.

After this season, there were many doubts whether he would be a post college football player. This was the NFL telling “his people” to keep him in college for another season ….

Part of me is happy to have him back and part of me is unsure how he'll perform in this offense. Only one way to find out.

See posts saying sellers was awesome first year, mediocre last year, relating it to offensive coordinator, offensive line, etc.

What I saw was the element of surprise the first year; primary not open, take off and run. Pocket collapses, strong enough to slip away and run. Throws a decent midrange out and long ball. Overthrows everything else.

Bowl game showed the blueprint of how to keep him in front and that was all she wrote. That’s what I saw. When he was forced to play the position instead of playing ‘Sellers’ he was darn near impotent.

If he puts in the work he needs to put in and plays TO WIN, NOW, I’ll be his biggest fan. But I just don’t feel it and I think the money we have invested in him will keep him on the field, W-L record be damned.

Just for the board's information, the difference in Seller's passing from year 2 to 3 was very little. 5 fewer TD's, but the other stats were pretty consistent.

The change was primarily in his running.

2024
196/299 65.6% 2534 yds 18 TD's. 7 INT's
Rushing: 166 for 674 yds and 7 TD's

2025
178/293 60.8% 2437 yds 13 TD's 8 INT's
Rushing: 149 for 270 yds and 5 TD's

60% completion rate is nothing special. Averaging 22.5 yds per game rushing doesn't scare anyone either.

DCs know how to shut him down now. I don't see Briles totally remaking him as a player, which is what is needed. He is an athlete playing QB, like most HS teams do. Unfortunately, college defenses are full of athletes too.
