So how dose the crossovers work? What happens if Honaker or Essex falls. Who will host who will travel? What are the possible scenarios?

The highest seed left in the west will host the lowest seed in the east. The highest seed left in the east will host the lowest seed left in the west.

So a 2 seed may have to travel to a 5 seed or a 3 seed? Doesn't seem right but I guess it is what it is.

Let's say (#4) GW and (#3) Galax win in the west and (#5) CB AND (#6) PM all pull upsets (based on seeding). Then PM would travel to galax and GW would travel to CB.

And if GW #4 and Galax #3 wins and Alta and Essex win, then #2 Alta will travel to #3 Galax I assume.

I think you have it right. If #3 Galax, #4 GW and #5 CB wins then CB goes to Galax and GW goes to Altavista. That is if Altavista beats PM.

To win a state championship, you normally have to play at least one big game on the road. It's good to play on road, in that it prepares you to play "on the road" in Salem.

In the three years this format has been used, the state champion has traveled in the semis every year.

From Galax paper's site:

Let's take this froggy to biology class, and dissect the possibilities:
1. Essex and Honaker win - Mathematically most probable of the scenarios, Essex would host the Galax/Haysi winner and Honaker would host the Altavista/Parry McCluer winner.
2. Essex and George Wythe win - Essex would host George Wythe and Galax/Haysi would host the Parry McCluer-Altavista winner.
3. Colonial Beach, Honaker and Altavista win - Honaker would host Colonial Beach, Altavista would host Galax/Haysi.
4. Colonial Beach, Honaker and Parry McCluer win - Colonial Beach would host Galax/Haysi, Honaker would host Parry McCluer.
5. Colonial Beach, George Wythe and Altavista win - Altavista would host George Wythe and Galax/Haysi would host Colonial Beach.
6. Colonial Beach, George Wythe and Parry McCluer win - Colonial Beach would host George Wythe and Galax/Haysi would host Parry McCluer.

Good observation. I recall a state championship game one year, in which the loser's longest road trip of season was to Salem. The winner had played several big games on the road. It's good to go on road at least once during playoffs.
