Serious Question: What are transfer players looking for?

Is it just money? Is it playing time AND money? Is it just "get me outta here"?

I ask these questions because I'm seeing folks who have opportunities to leave smaller schools and choose non-football schools/conferences after visits with schools like &tate. An example would be the kid from North Texas who was supposed to visit us and commits to Rutgers. Rutgers........ I mean, I know we aren't a blue blood, but Rutgers over a potential opportunity in the SEC?

B10 ? There is no one answer. I would say all of the above in varying degrees depending on the kid. Some it's all money. Some it's playing time with as much money as possible. Some kids go to Vanderbilt/similar because of the degree value

They’re trying to find whatever makes them happy. Whether that’s money, playing time, a different coach etc, they’re just looking for the perfect place for them. It’s part of being an 18-22 year old and being a bit naive that the real world is some perfect place where everyone can find some place where everything is just like they want it.

It’s no different than HS recruiting has been. They just get another crack at it. As @DesotoCountyDawg said it could be a number of factors just like a HS recruit.

Rutgers was better than us last year, a LOT better. They are also in the BIG 10. That league is just as good as the SEC now, and appears to be rising.

I know a lot of folks on this board won't accept this, but nationally, the opportunity to play in the SEC isn't really viewed differently from an opportunity to play in the Big Ten. Playing at State isn't going to be viewed as a bigger opportunity than Rutgers. I assume you're talking about DT Sheffield. I'm from Corinth, like him, and I moved out to DFW, like him. After a year of living in DFW, one of the country's major metro areas, I can kind of understand the appeal of a young guy wanting to continue living near a major metro area. Rutgers offers him a chance to do that. Maybe he just doesn't want to go back to Mississippi.

I think overall, "what are players looking for?" It's four major things:
1. I think a lot of these guys loved the attention that they got during their high school recruitment, but then they got on campus and the love and attention stopped. Being in the new transfer portal era, that attention train never has to stop. They get to put themselves back in that position 1-4 more times.

2. Money. 90% of these guys are never going to go pro and most of the ones that do will be gone within a few years, so this is their opportunity to maximize their earning potential.

3. Opportunity. If you're a junior QB and your school brings in a senior transfer from a bigger school, then it's because you're getting replaced or going to have to fight for playing time. If you can go somewhere else and be their assumed starter, why wouldn't you?

4. Relationships with coaching staff. Once things go sour, it's a lot easier to try to start over fresh instead of trying to repair.

I think it varies by player.

To address the North Texas player, he was not a take for us so he didn't choose Rutgers over us.

20% looking for a pay day (usually the upper echelon of transfers), and you hear all about these;
80% looking for playing time and the chance to stay in football, and you never hear about these.

Obviously there's gray area in there too, but I think those are the two big buckets.

Y’all realize these kids have agents now that negotiate everything right? Money and how it will be dispersed, playing time, living situation, transportation, draft preparation and campaigning etc.

But on top of that a kid wants to go to a school with good tradition, fan base, chance to win and a fun town and atmosphere.

So if you’re town and nightlife/social scene is lacking you’re going to have to offer better options and more resources than the other schools offering or hope that the player in question prefers a town where there is no distractions so he can focus solely on his craft.

It’s not “hey kid we will give you $100k to come play LB for year”. Their agent negotiates all this **** and whoever comes with the best package gets the player.

that is how it works for your top 250-300 transfers. It’s why we have really only been getting smaller conference guys.

This is why NIL is bad for us. At least before if you strayed too far out of your lane (Ole Miss) and went overboard it was obvious and there were some ramifications. It allowed us to strategize and made it to where we COULD offer some top players their best package. Now that there is no restrictions, the amount of talent we can offer the best package option to is non existent.

1) money/opportunity
2) chance to be doted upon again with a re-recruitment

I think money, playing time, fit, etc. Depends on the person of the order.

Same thing everyone was looking for at 20 years of age - faster cars, better weed, sluttier girls, more money.

Truly seems to be a sense of home, finding the right University where they can thrive and be educated so they can become the best version of themselves and at the end become high functioning educated members of society. Then entering the workforce to help make this work a better place......ok 🐂 💩 it's all about........
