Seriously, between what we're looking at now, does Kermit Davis look like that bad of an option?

He is at the very least in the same league as the other two and deserves consideration in my opinion.

If Calipari says he's ready, he's ready. Cal is the best coach in the land. He knows what he's talking about.<div>
</div><div>Basketball is dirty and isn't changing. I say embrace it. We're going to see it on display tonight: Pitino and his well disciplined upperclassmen vs. Calipari's disciplined but young talent. Cal/Payne and Co. know how to handle the primadonnas that Stansbury couldn't. Hope he can X and O as well as Stans but I'm willing to take that chance.</div><div>
</div><div>Watch Pollard commit the next day.</div>

Recruiter, evaluator, motivator, X and Os, representative, all those are responsibilities of a college coach. And Cals about the best there is RIGHT NOW. The unbelievable success he's had in college, pretty much anywhere he's been, is uncanny. Had he stayed at one location, he'd have multiple titles by now.

his program, his philosophy, his record ( he DOESNT HAVE a record!) What is it about this guy that you like? He got shuttled around Europe on 10 different teams in 10 years and since has been riding coat tails in somebody else's program and walking in their shadow.

From my original post:<div><span style="font-family: Tahoma, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">
Cal is the best coach in the land.
</span></div><div>
</div><div>As for why I like Kenny Payne:</div><div>
</div><div>1 - He learned under Cal, who is one of the best out there. Cal is also recommending him. While I initially thought it suspicious that Cal was recommending an assistant for a rival, the success of his assistants only helps build his brand. Fairly certain he's not too concerned with MSU right now anyways.</div><div>
</div><div>2 - He is connected to World Wide Wes. They have never been directly connected to any wrong doing. This is the future of the basketball industry. </div><div>
</div><div>3 - I understand his background, decisions to leave the State of MS, and now wanting to return.</div>

At least the other coaches mentioned have a chance to do a good job at MSU. Kermit Davis would take us almost back to the Bob Boyd era. Sreiously, he would be a terrible hire.

Or somewhere close to it (don't feel like going back and looking right now) that if we even look at Kermit Davis than something has gone terribly wrong.

We're at the wrong stage right now, not sure were at the terribly wrong stage yet.

A good coach has his team competing for championships in their respective league within 4 or 5 seasons. It took KD 10 years to have one season winning 20+ games, to beat any BCS size school, and to get to the NIT at MTSU. This year's MTSU team should have been in the NCAA, but they choked down the stretch.<div>
</div><div>If you think Kermit is a good choice, go read a MTSU basketball message board and skim through the posts from the past few years. Most MTSU fans have wanted him fired for years. You want a coach that most MTSU fans don't want at their school?</div><div></div><div>Based on success rate, Jeff Lebo was a better hire for Auburn than Kermit Davis would be for Miss State. Lebo was much more successful at Tennessee Tech and Chattanooga than Kermit has been at MTSU. Lebo was terrible and he would be a better hire than Kermit.</div><div>
</div><div>Kermit would be on par with hiring Croom.</div>

This is not a hard concept to grasp.<div>
</div><div>Recruiting talent is the biggest part of coaching. There aren't many that can win the whole thing without NBA talent. And since the object is to win the whole thing, I'd say it's a pretty important factor.</div><div>
</div><div>Cal's won everywhere he's been. Make peace with it.</div>

that considering where we are in this search, Payne is going to be our best gamble it looks like. No doubt he's a gamble, but we've missed out on anybody with relevance and experience that we would truly want.

As Goat said (and I hate saying that), at least Payne has the potential to bring in some players. At this point that may be our best chance to win with any of the remaining candidates that want our job.

head coach and fell flat on his Cajun *** because he had never made out a starting lineup and couldn't manage a staff, players, donors, the press, etc. He still recruited well in Oxford but couldnt coach a bunch of middle school football players. I'm seeing a lot of similarities. Paynes totally unproven and thats not what you do in a major conference. Just because somebody sits on the front row of "1st Church of the Good" doesn't make them a deacon.

1 - He learned under Cal, who is one of the best out there.
