Jordan Goodwin - Junior All American

The USA Today's 247Sports.com’s composite listings have Goodwin at No. 90, well below many of the players he’s been outplaying through the first two sessions for the St. Louis Eagles in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League. Through seven games, he’s leading the team averages in scoring (17.6), rebounding (10.3), assists (4.0) and is second on the team in steals (1.4). This is against the best competition in the Midwest including a showcase event in Indy last weekend.

Going into the EYBL season, Goodwin’s biggest offer was from Illinois. In the past few days, Texas and Connecticut have offered. He also holds offers for both football and basketball at Iowa.

Goodwin led Althoff to a Class 3A state title in basketball and as a starting outside linebacker and tight end, helped his school finish runner-up in Class 4A in football. Goodwin didn’t start playing football until his sophomore year, but while his future is in basketball, he has benefited from the physical nature of the gridiron.

“I think it helps with my aggressiveness, getting to the basket and finishing,” Goodwin said. “Playing two sports keeps me active all year, football, the weight room and basketball. I’m in shape, I can run. Playing in football keeps me in shape.”

Should he play his senior year of football?

Yes... if he gets hurt in football, a school isn't going to "pull" their offer... that is bad PR and will turn off other recruits. In fact, I would encourage him to be open to football in college as well, if for no other reason but to bring attention to his team and continue to build their credibility as a talent producing program.

Depaul made a commit quit mid football season a few years back once he committed. Then again Depaul sucks at basketball.

Great question. Hard to believe but I try to encourage multi sport kids to play whatever they want....because I know how much kids and families sacrifice to play at the travel level plus I say play both as long as you can.

Yet bringing into account the level of interest and offers in both sports I think in his case the best way to go is to decide on one sport starting in the fall.

Like it or not he won't be playing both in college. Also you need to take into account factors like potential injury (also not just for football...I've seen more than a few football careers shortened/ended over basketball injuries) and the like.

If he wants to play he should play. You can't go into things worrying about injury. That is when you play tentatively and get hurt. He is just as likely, if not more, to blow out a knee playing AAU basketball in the spring summer or fall.

My opinion is he has NFL size now so the potential to be a pro is there. Basketball (NBA) will be a lot more difficult. Gates is a the player that he reminds me of. I say play both in High School and look at where you want to be 10 years from now when choosing which sport to play in college.

From the little bit that I've seen of Goodwin as a basketball player, he has a ways to go to develop his ballhandling and shooting skills. At 6'4 or so, he's going to need to get much better in those areas for college. Right now, he relies on his strength and athleticism to dominate HS athletes. I think one reason he's not ranked higher is because that type of game (at 6'4) does not project at the next level.

IMO, it depends what his favorite sport is. If he sees basketball as his future, I'd advise him to not play football and continue to work on his skills, which means skill development....not AAU basketball where they pretty much just play games. He reminds me of a young Quentin Richardson (of Whitney Young and DePaul fame). They are about the same size. In HS, Richardson dominated with his strength, athleticism and tenacious approach. As he got older, Richardson expanded his perimeter game and had a nice NBA career. I think Goodwin could have a similar career, if he puts in the time to improve his perimeter skills. My two cents.....

Without a doubt. Something like 28 of the first 31 picks in the NFL draft played 2 sports in high school. There is a ton of literature showing the benefits.

He commited to SLU to play basketball. However I have to agree with LHStigers he has an nfl body for a tight end. I think he should play football.

He is not playing football this season. According to the coach, the decision has been made by the family.

He is a Man Child - dominating high school boys' hoops with physicality since he was 15. Went heads up and nose-to-nose with Tatum - a new Dukie, possibly one and done.

Add a college training regiment and he will be even more of a beast - he collected 9.9 rebounds a game during the Nike summer circuit, scored nearly 20 points too. He does not have a "body type" for the NBA - but his certainly is for an NFL tight end or linebacker.

Looky here - this was from the STL Post Althoff team-preview article:

Senior tight end Jordan Goodwin (6-4, 218) is back for his second year on the varsity. After stepping away from the sport his first two years of high school, Goodwin shined as a junior. He caught 42 passes for 511 yards and three touchdowns. He received scholarship offers from Iowa, New Mexico and Jacksonville State. He recently committed to play basketball at St. Louis University.

“He's a vocal leader,” Turner said. “He plays football like he does basketball. He goes all in.”

This was from the Belleville paper. Maybe they changed their minds. I hope he play.

Turner was asked about Goodwin’s somewhat surprising absence on Monday.

“As of right now, the Goodwin family has decided he’s not going to play football,” Turner said. “As a player with that ability and that skill set, obviously you want him to play.”
