Shouldn't we save our pitchers for the regional now?

Winning the SEC is great and all but the regional is way more important, at this point they will either pick us to host or they won't, although winning tommorrow probably locks it up as a host, I'd rather save our pitchers for the regional. Discuss?

That will give him more rest than he usually gets because he will pitch game 2 of the regional. same with Mitchell or Pollo, whoever we throw game 3.

Not sure why you think that, but it's been the consensus from what I've seen that we will need a ton of help from some other teams to be in the discussion. And honestly, I think with 4 teams probably hosting from the SEC we would have to win the tournament to get a legit shot. I have a hard time believing the NCAAwill give 5 SEC teams regional sites unless we blow them away. Winning the tournament would certainly do that.

because we need to give all of our key pitchers an appearance in the SEC tournament. Too much rest for a pitcher can be nearly as bad as not enough rest as far as effectiveness.

Dawg 61, I understand your thinking, but this shows that you know very little about how baseball and pitching works. Now, I think it is important that we don't over extend a pitcher in this tournament. I think that what we did with Stratton today by letting him go 6 innings and 90 something pitches was just perfect. Keeping pitchers healthy is all about keeping them in a rhythm and in a routine. This keeps their arms strong, healthy, and stuff sharp. If we gave them 9 days off, then it would take them out of their routine, and thus make their stuff less sharp. 9 days off really wouldn't help add mphs to the fastball or make their arms healthier. <div>
</div><div>That being said, I do think it would be counter productive to over extend a guy and go into the 120 pitch mark in trying to win this tournament. </div>

i will tell you there is a fine line between rest and rust. If I went more than 7 days without pitching in a game, I would never have my best stuff.

innings, pitches and appearances Stratton, Reed and Holder are about to endure if we go Regional, Super Regional and Omaha.

if we win the regional- he wont pitch for another week until the Super- if we win the Super, he will pitch the following week in Omaha

it's not like he will be pitching on short rest

At this point in the season, we are playing to win every single game we play. Period. For confidence and RPI's sake. We start protecting our pitchers and letting off the gas instead of letting them go out and battle, it could hurt us psychologically a lot more than it ever would physically.

I wouldn't want to put our pitchers through the torment of pitching ina Super Regional or theCollege World Series.

to Stratton. Now apply it to Reed and Holder. Reed and Holder are probably about to go 3 days in a row in the Regional, 3 days in a row in the Super and then every game in Omaha. At this point I'm prepping my arms for those 3 tournaments and those 3 pitchers will make or break MSU in the next 3 weekends.

Neither Reed nor Holder have thrown that many pitches (Reed threw 14 pitches yesterday and Holder threw 25... and I know he didn't throw that many today). Throwing 35 pitches doesn't take near the toll on your arm as 105+. Cohen is strategically keeping them to less than 2 innings in a game so they can be fresh if we need them down the stretch. Apples to Oranges.

every week the pitchers will throw a "bullpen". Usually 40-60 pitches. So even when we dont see them pitch, they are pitching. Stratton likely would have thrown his "bullpen" yesterday if this were a regular week, so throwing today aint that big a deal.<div>
</div><div>When post season comes around everyone thinks pitchers are pitching more than they do in the regular season. Its not true, its just that we actually see them pitching more. The worst thing that could happen is to rest our best guys and take them out of game situations.</div>

No need to save anyone. We've got to beat Kentucky to have a chance to host, so we have to pitch Graveman. We play all out to win tomorrow, then again on Saturday (hopefully). If we make it to Sunday, I think we'll host.

I would be very disappointed in our team if we did start sandbagging our pitching staff. That would show a lack of a competitive edge (see basketball the last several years) and no killer instinct. I want all of our teams to go for the jugular from start to finish. If you get the jugular then go for another major artery. Never let up. Right now we are playing in the SECT. Play like you want to win it. We get a week off to rest for the regional. It also needs to be noted that even on the days the pitchers rest they are throwing on the side in bullpen sessions. Rest does not mean sitting on the couch watching Duck Dynasty reruns with a bag of Doritos in your lap until your next start.
