His attorney says they plan to appeal. Perhaps they are not quite as confident that someone who's caught red-handed emailing his approval of a plan not to turn a serial child molester over to authorities will only get probation.
“The only downside for us is if the message isn’t ‘heard’ and acted upon, and we then become vulnerable for not having reported it,” Spanier told Curley and Schultz in 2001 in the email exchange. He called the plan “humane and a reasonable way to proceed.”
Yeh, Dr. Spanier, that's the only downside of your carefully planned inaction. Some people might think enabling a child rapist to continue his craft is also a downside. But hey, don't let that bother you. And rest assured your slobbering fanboys will stand behind you until the end.

I am so glad that Joe didn't know, and didn't make sure a child rapist was stopped.
Hey now, who cares if children continue to get raped? We must protect our own legacy and the image of our beloved university! The only downside is, we might get caught.
Exactly why that program should no longer exist.
we are lucky he left UNL--he should never have been hired in the first place, and he stayed too long.

Who needs PSU fans? We have our own sanctimonious finger-waggers who assured us that there was no evidence of a cover-up. And now that there's a conviction (despite no evidence of a cover-up!), they somehow know exactly what the sentence will be.

It really sucks when you can't even discuss elaborate plans to commit a crime via email without people blowing the whole darned thing out of proportion. I wonder why Spanier went to the trouble of referring to Sandusky as "the subject" and the children he was raping as "guests" - even though he clearly wasn't covering anything up?
He is a huge douche. When I started at UNL in the fall of 1990 the whole campus was falling apart. The library was about to lose its accreditation because they didn't have enough academic journals. The continual slide of the university's academic reputation (leading to AAU expulsion) was well underway. Plus, the guy just had a gigantic ego.
- All that may be true, but the AAU expulsion was ultimately due to legislative action by the Unicameral back in the 70s. They legislatively divided UNMC (most notably) from UNL in such a manner that the research taking place there could not be counted towards UNL's membership in the AAU. I believe it was one of our former mates from the B12 that kept us from being expelled earlier and once we left the B12 their support disappeared.
Seems even worse that this "leader" understood the law and knew exactly what he was doing was illegal. He made a calculated decision to choose a more comfortable personal work environment over blowing the whistle on a child molester.
Exactly, and for this decision I think he needs to spend some time. Being ignorant of the law, while not an excuse is at least understandable. Making the decision he did is not acceptable and should be punished severely.
Here in lies a perfect example of the hypocrisy of the academic elite in this country. They know the law and they choose to interpret it as it best fits their needs. I personally hope he rots for this.
Unfortunately he likely won't get enough prison time to rot. But if he serves even a short sentence, perhaps Penn State can finally stop paying him that $600,000 per year golden parachute.
