Thought it would be interesting to start a thread on the matchup this weekend and see what everyone can add for discussion. Just trying to stimulate some more game conversation.

Quarterbacks
Russell (58.6%/2897 yds/24 TDs/10 Ints) Vs. Chelf (60.4%/1588 Yds/15 TDs/ 6 Ints) or Walsh (66.9%/1564 Yds/13 TDs/3 Ints)
I would give an edge to Tyler Russell for playing in the SEC against better defenses and for playing all year. Overall, the yards and completion percentages are fairly comparable.

Running Backs
Perkins/Griffin/Robinson (1574 Yds) Vs. Smith/Roland/Bennet (763 Yds/13 TDs)
I would give MSU RBs a big edge here. The wild card would be a stellar recruit for OSU that I don't know about from not following them.

Receiving
Johnson/Johnson/Perkins/Lewis (603 Yds/6 TDs) Vs. Stewart/Jackson/Moore/Goodlet (2431 Yds/18 TDs)
OSU gets a big edge in receiving with their top receivers returning and our top receivers graduated.

Kicking
Bell (XP 97.7% and 66.7% FGs) Vs. New Kicker
MSU's Bell gets the advantage as OSU's kicker graduated so the new kicker will not have performed under fire for a significant number of reps.

Defense
Scoring (MSU 34th at 23.3 pts/game and OSU 64th at 28.2 pts/game)
MSU's Defense was much higher rated for limiting scoring so I would give MSU the edge even with the loss of Banks and Slay. Front 7 should be improved for MSU and both defenses have new DCs.

Overall, I think the game will be close and I give the edge to MSU based upon the factors above.

Defense: schemes and adjustments will be the difference. If we would have had a DC worth a damn last year, we would have won 10 games. We have the athletes and speed to match up, so I guess we'll see how much has changed since last year; I'm optimistic, though.

Here's some things I'd like to see:

1. If our receivers aren't cutting it, I want some two-back sets where LDP motions into a receiver. (Just not empty backfield)

2. I want Milton to have at least 3 carries a half. Recently watched the Spring Game @ HailState. Milton has amazing vision. His cutback ability with his vision is something not seen around here in a long time. When fall camp started, somebody posted a video of a fight breaking out. Before I noticed the fight, I noticed a nice cut and burst into the whole. When I made out the number, you guessed it - Milton.

3. If LDP doesn't show some electricity on KOR, I want to see Holloway returning. I think the Tubby-Holloway pairing could be "pick your poison."

4. I want OT Robinson to get some meaningful reps. I want to see what he's got. I would love to have an OT controversy.

5. I want to see a CB become J. Stewart's shadow.

6. If the starting LBs know all the positions, I want to see a package with Skinner/McKinney @ MLB, Wells @ SLB, Jackson @ WLB.

Quarterbacks
Russell (58.6%/2897 yds/24 TDs/10 Ints) Vs. Chelf (60.4%/1588 Yds/15 TDs/ 6 Ints)
While Russell did play against the SEC, Chelf's stats are from only 5 games.

Running Backs
Perkins/Griffin/Robinson Vs. Smith/Roland
I would give MSU RB the edge. Smith is our main guy, with Roland being our change of pace back. One of the two freshman (Webster/Childs) will probably get some major PT this year.

Receiving
Johnson/Johnson/Perkins/Lewis (603 Yds/6 TDs) Vs. Stewart/Jackson/Moore/Goodlet (2431 Yds/18 TDs)
OSU wins this battle hands down. Looking forward to our True Frosh (Ra'Shaad Samples) hopefully seeing the field. He's a Josh Stewart clone who runs a 4.32.

Kicking
Bell (XP 97.7% and 66.7% FGs) Vs. Ben Grogan
MSU's Bell gets the advantage. Grogan is a true freshman, the kid is unproved, but good. Until he kicks in a pressure situation, he'll have to earn respect.

Defense
Scoring (MSU 34th at 23.3 pts/game and OSU 64th at 28.2 pts/game)
Actually giving the edge to OSU in this one using your philosophy (edge to QB's). OSU only gave up 5 more points per game facing elite offenses while you guys gave up 23 per game facing, well, SEC offenses.

This game will be decided by whomever sets the tempo. I think if OSU gets our offense and the chains rolling and putting your defense on their heals quickly, this game could be over early. However, if you guys punch us in the mouth and not let our offense click by getting a few turnovers, then this game could be close all 4 quarters.

Don't count out the fact that OSU lost their OC to a head coaching gig at USM. My friend is a best writer for them and raves about the guy. I doubt it makes a difference in schemes and things but that's a big coaching position to lose, especially coupled with DC at the same time. The X factor here is Gundy has the edge on Mullen.

Not worried about our OC. This is a given at Oklahoma State.

In 2010 OSU hired Dana Holgerson and he installed the Air Raid. In his first year he took OSU's offense from #70 in the nation to the #3 ranked total and scoring offense.
Dana left for the HC position in West Virginia that year and everyone thought our offense would fall apart.

Gundy hired Todd Monken from the Jacksonville Jags to come in and learn our offense. He didn't want an established OC that would bring his own style of offense, he wanted one to learn ours and add his own tweaks. Did we decline? Nope, infact we improved in his first year. In 2011 OSU had the #3 Total Offense and #2 ranked Scoring Offense.
Everyone thought it was because Brandon Weeden was our QB and since he was just drafted our offense would fail.

In 2012 OSU had the #4 ranked Total Offense and #3 ranked Scoring Offense with not one, not two, but three 1,000 yard passers.
Monken gets the HC job at USM and our #1 QB to start the 2012 season transferred.

Gundy went and picked up Mike Yurcich who helped Shippensburg, PA (Div II) rank first nationally in total offense and second nationally in scoring offense at more than 46 points per game. His offense also led the nation in passing yards at 387.7 yards a game. We already ran a fast paced offense, the players talk about how much faster Yurcich's offense is than last years (which is hard for me to fathom cause that was fast).

As far as the new DC, trust me, were actually excited about that move. Bill Young's decision to play soft coverage (12-15yd) cushions on the WR's was a bit to be desired.

I mostly agree with you, but this? Seriously? You might want to take a look at how SEC and Big 12 offenses did in the bowl season last year and then get back to us with which conference has the elite offenses.

Yeah. I think Gundy is pretty much the OC there. I guess it's possible your offense could fall off some, but I sure wouldn't expect it to.

Interesting note, 3 of the last 4 Southern Miss head coaches came from the OSU OC job. Bower, Fedora and Monken.

Cowpoke, you lost any credibility you ever had when you gave the defensive edge to OSU. If you were joking, I apologize, but apparently you typed that with a straight face.
