Since it's #SNOWBOWL12 week and all, just wanted to ask some of you something...

If you attended the game, how was the atmosphere and how was the game? This was one of the first games that I clearly remember watching from start to finish and have never really heard anyones game stories. Just something I thought would be cool to ask.

I was but 12 yrs old at the time. I can remember watching intently as it was snowing on the TV and looking out the windows in Vicksburg to see if it had started snowing yet. I think it started in Vicksburg at halftime, because I can remember going outside and coming back to watch the end of the game.

I know that doesn't answer your question, but even though I wasn't there, it's a memory of MSU football for me.

That is accurate because it started snowing in Jackson right before the start of the 3rd quarter. I just thought that it was one of the coolest things to see that much snow at a football game and be so competitive. Easily one of my favorite games that I remember.

It was a decent atmosphere and the Indy Bowl folks did a good job. But if you got there early, like we did, and stayed outside the stadium and walked around, even attending some of the events, you were frozen. The temp was in the mid-20s, pretty unusual for Shreveport. In the stadium, everybody was so bundled up and huddled together that there wasn't the normal noisy atmosphere. Might've even been worse for the A&M fans because College Station is a warmer climate.

But overall, I didn't think the atmosphere was all that great because of the weather. Snow started about the same time the game did, and at times you could hardly see the field. It was certainly not a typical football game in the South.

^^^This....it was so cold, our tailgate was held in the car with the heat on. The game was surreal, not only because of the snow, but because we fell way behind twice in the game. Our hotel room was in Ruston, about 45 miles away. It took us 3 hours to get back. I kept wondering when I was going to slide off the road like so many did that night.

I found my VHS copy of the game. It was pretty cool to watch with the snow and all. I'll put it on tomorrow night and dub it over to dvd

I'm sure it was a lot better on television than it was in person

In person was pretty miserable in spite of the outcome. I recorded it and watched it later and it was a lot better then.

I had a great time. In fact, it was one of the most fun games I have ever attended. I was sitting in the corner of the endzone with a group of other students. It was intense. The bourbon kept us warm, and we were into every play from start to finish.

The snow was coming down so hard when we walked in the stadium that it had blanketed the field in several inches in just a few minutes.

I always liked Texas A&M before then because of watching them with Jackie when I was a kid. I never expected their fans to be so terrible. I thought they would be like us. They are not. They remind me of Canadians. They tell you all about how their country (team) is better than yours, then they tell you how arrogant you are. Beating them was very enjoyable.

No Joke... I literally went to the bathroom to stick my hands under a cold sink just to thaw them out at one point.

Coldest I've ever been in my life...

I've never been colder than that night. We were up pretty high, so I think the wind was worse. The guys in front of us stashed their beers in the snow on the bleacher in front of them. The PA announcer kept announcing road closures and interstate exit closures during the second half. As for the game, I remember us being down by 2 td's late in the game, and I remember returning the blocked extra point, and us eventually winning. When we got back to the car, some bitter A&M fans had broken the flags off our car, and every other State fans' cars around, and left messages in the snow on the hoods/windshields. The next day it took 4 hours to get from Shreveport to Monroe on the slick, jam-packed interstate.
Still way better than my Cotton Bowl trip.

The Arkansas "Freezing Rain" Game was colder, in my opinion.

But it was no doubt cold at the SnowBowl. I just remember seeing snow pile up on everyone's hat bills. Something I will never forget and one of the coolest games I have ever been to, even if it was the Independence Bowl.

You may be right

I remember being miserable at the Arky game, but I'm not sure if that was how we were playing or the weather or a combination of both.

A couple of memories from the Snow Bowl though.... (1) I took us 45 Minutes to get to Shreveport from our hotel in Ruston and 3.5 Hrs to get back. We actually stopped at one point to stop a car from spinning in the middle of the Interstate. I didn't count, but I would guess there were easily 50 cars in the ditch on the ride back to Ruston. (2) The weather channel saying in our hotel before the game that there was an "inch or so" of snow expected.

We were dressed for cold but not wet. Snow wasnt supposed to come in until later that night. Frozen solid was right. I recall they had ropes up the ramps so that peoria could climb back up the icy ramps. We tried to find hotels all the way back to Mississippi and got the last 2 rooms in a dive in Ruston. Terrible hotel.
The game itself was awesome at the end but very rough sitting in the freezing weather until we started coming back. Their back Toombs was a massive hoss The massive 5 foot punt was a low point. However the blocked punt and conversion then Madkins win made it all worth while

Really????

I guess this Snow Bowl was a pretty big deal for you guys... I don't remember it being that big of a deal... I guess when you lose you try and wipe out those memories...

You don't remember your football team playing in what most would consider a blizzard in the south??? It's funny how it's on espn classic all of the time and mentioned pretty often as a c,assic bowl game but hardly any Angie's "remember" it. You guys need to stop getting so butt hurt over it.

Most folks don't give two rat farts what the score was or who won. It's cool because two college teams played in a bowl game during a pretty nasty snow storm....and it was awesome to watch. Hell, maybe you guys in Texas play in snow storms all of the time and that's why it's hard for you to remember.

I left the game in the first quarter.

Was dressed for chilly weather, but not snow. We were miserable, so we got back in the car and slid down the interstate back to the Holiday Inn (or something similar). There were several other MSU fans in the lobby watching on the big TV in the free breakfast area. So we all just brought our liquor down, set up a bar, and had some good and warm fun.

I stayed for every minute of the Arkansas sleet fest for some reason. In no socks, too, because at the time I thought Joe Lee Dunn was awesome.

Not being sarcastic or trying to "snow" on your parade (sorry couldn't pass that one up) but I really don't remember it being that big of a deal... just another loss for us.... we never play in the snow, hell we hardly ever play in the cold... lol!!! I have seen and been to a lot of big Aggie Games, losses and wins and this one just never stuck with us... I remember losing to ND in a bowl game and FSU in one and we hated on them for years after that. I still hate both of them, but this one never really hung up on us for what ever reason. The idea that it was a cold game and snow and all is cool, and yeah the score doesn't seem to be that big of a deal for you guys either, but it seems as if you guys are the ones making this a big deal. I honestly don't think if it was in Kyle this year that we would make such a big deal over it. Maybe it's cause we lost... to the winner goes the spoils i guess

It was a fond memory for the Bulldogs going into the new year and was the last bowl game we played for about 8 years or so plus Jackie Sherrill came to us from aTm so that added to it. We have definitely made it more than it is but it's the first time we've played each other since that game so it's a creative way to bring back a fond memory for the MSU fans. Consider it an honor we are making it such a big deal. If your team feels like you you're about to get stomped on Saturday. Hail State!!

I actually don't remember much of the game itself. A few game events come to mind, though... The odd kickoff at one point where our kicker (Westerfield?) seemed to put it down on its side and kicked it about 12 yards. Not sure what was going on there. I also remember the blocked extra point in OT that we returned for 2 points, and the winning TD.

Other than that, I more remember the non-game-related things that happened. I was with my brother, my buddy and his family. My brother and I didn't have a hotel. We were planning to drive back as far as Vicksburg to stay with some relatives that night. My buddy's family had a hotel room, and they were gracious enough to let us stay with them in their room that night. We weren't getting anywhere that night. The next morning, I still managed to end up in the median of I-20 at one point. Needed a tow. Oh, and my buddy dropped one of his gloves in the urinal at halftime. That's been a source of amusement ever since.

I really don't get why you don't see the value in beating a top 25 team... yeah they are in a lesser WAC conference, but so was Boise St. and TCU when they were ranked high... Not at all what this thread is about, but hey I guess if you can't put an a few real thoughts together the best way is just to mock what someone else said huh???

Stay classy Stash...

Sherill had coached at both our schools for a while, so it was an event. And it just happens to be the last time we played.

I think the best word to describe it would be surreal. Pretty sure snow wasn't expected. But it started about 30 minutes before the game and just kept snowing and snowing. It was cold, wet, and miserable, but you had the feeling you were at something special. By the 3rd quarter word started spreading that the I-20/I49 bridge was closed and everyone started wondering how the hell we were going to get out of there. But nobody wanted to leave. Random strangers were talking to each other like we all knew each other. Planned on driving back to Mississippi after the game and getting in about 2:00. Wound up finally finding a hotel with vacancies in Monroe at about 4:00. The breakfast buffet at 10:00 was crammed with people wearing maroon.

According to the NWS, the airport at Shreveport had only 2.2". Not sure where their airport is or how far from the stadium it is, but it seemed like more accumulated at the stadium. But maybe not. I know they had to plow the field several times with the little John Deer sweeper they had, and then it must have frozen solid because they quit using it. It was also a good thing they'd recently installed the new type artificial turf ... real grass would have been a mess.

I was too cold to remember much about the atmosphere. We left Jackson early that afternoon having looked at the weather reports of snow and said "Snow? Yeah right." Then as we got seated at luxurious Independence Stadium lo and behold it started snowing. I thought "Well, maybe it's just a localized deal and won't get much past about Ruston." Right about then my phone rang and it was my dad going "It's snowing in Raymond!!" Well, damn.

The bowl did a good job trying to sweep the field until the tractor froze up, but fortunately the Aggie Band got out there at halftime and marched back and forth across the hashes and pretty much cleared the field by themselves. Players of the game, those guys.

What I learned from the Snow Bowl was if you want to freeze to death in the snow, stay seated. We sat under a blanket the whole first half and froze our asses off. Second half I stood up and moved around a little, and was much less cold.

Then it took about eight driving hours to get back to Jackson. That part sucked, and I have no desire to ever repeat it.

John Michael Marlin. Westerfield was a senior in '99.
The ball kept falling off the tee, so Marlin asked the ref if he could just lay it on the ground. A&M gets the ball on our side of the 50 and scores shortly thereafter.
No idea why he didn't ask for a holder.

I remember the snow falling just before kickoff and looking at my dad saying this could get fun. When the snow melted on our jeans we were sitting in cold wet clothes definitely not fun. A&M going up by 14 in second quarter, not fun. Leaving the game to go back to holiday inn at half time due to threat of road closures, not fun. Then watching us claw back with Dantae Walker and Wayne Madkin, I drove back to stadium, to watch A&M go back up by 2 scores. So I went back to hotel. Watched the rest of the game there, until we won in OT, then ran out to the interstate shoulder of the road and made naked snow angels on a drunk dare.
Due to all the ice and wrecks on I-20 East, It took us all the next day just to get to Ruston from shreveport. That was actually a fun day because a lot of the time we got out of the car and hung out in the median of I-20 throwing the football with MSU players also trying to get back home with their parents.

You're incorrect. Westerfield was our kicker in 2000, but he never kicked off. In 1999, Jeff Walker did kickoffs, in 2000 it was Marlin.

I do remember seeing some hilariously inept attempts at driving in the snow that night on the way home from my girlfriend's house. Some asshat in a Tacoma was flooring it while sliding backwards down one of the hills on Bowie Rd.

I have probably said this a number of times in other threads.

I went with quit beggin, quit beggins brother, the fat kid from woodville, TH, I am not sure if extreme was there or not, and several other MSU buds. We got there pretty early and sat on about the 30 yards line of what I think was the home side. I remember there being weather warnings for people to stay in doors and off the roads per the LSP. There were a bunch of aggies in overalls with the little aTm logo on the chest pocket down in the section in front of us who were woofing if up in the first half. Our group was a bit rowdy and it looked early like we were going to take an *** whoopin on the field. I remember TH and Quit Beggin said if we scored with about 10 minutes to go to close it to 14 we would win and they would take their shirts off, I agreed. But then again QB always takes his shirt off and shouts wrestling obscenities. That boy loves to throw trash cans too, but that is neither here nor there. We did, they did. we threw snowballs at said aggies in overalls from an elevated position (they had no shot), and they returned fire, hostilities were not imminent. The pelting ensued with heavier density post scores. Jamar toombs was untackleable in the first half at 250+. I remember right before half we muffed a kick off after our score that resulted in them getting the ball at midfield and a cheap TD right before the half ended, depression set in. We thought our goose was surely cooked yet we remained seated. Whiskey helped, makers mark if I am not mistooken. And older aggie slipped and fell on ice straight across the field from us resulting in EMT response, was carted out. The 4th quarter and OT were beyond insanity and most of the snow around us have been flung at earlier said aggies. They did not return fire and waved the flag of surrender in the 4th. The blocked extra point and lateral in overtime were epic....we lost all sense of reality at that point. Said aggies maintain it was a forward lateral. We carefully made it back to the hotel at 2 mph and went out and partied like Rick James circa late 70's. I wish I had more thumbs to give those titties 4 thumbs down. My uncle, an MSU grad and athlete was at the game and was staying in Ruston (67 miles) and he told me it took him three hours after the game to make that trip. He said he counted at least 40 cars off the road along I-20westbound.

It was top 5 one of my fondest memories. SEC Championship game in ATL against tennessee, and cotton bowl in Dallas until ricky williams ran over our souls.

Happy friday everyone! Free 5 knuckle drag's across the brow for the ag's in attendance this weekend. welcome bitches, come and get it.
