I’m finally going to breakdown and get a sleep test done for my sleep apnea and try to get a cpap. Anyone here have good experiences with clinics around the Jackson area?

Go to University Physicians and see Dr. Lewis. She is an ENT that specializes in Sleep Apnea.

And you will thank me later for other reasons.

What do they do if you can't go to sleep during the sleep test, in a strange place, and all the gizmos hooked up to you?

I've done several sleep studies over the years and I'm convinced it's a racket to sell CPAPs. I'm not saying a lot of people don't need them, but the consultation-sleep study-CPAP path is basically a rubber stamp.

I did the sleep home test. My insurance wouldn’t pay for the sleep in clinic study as a majority of insurances won’t. The cpap has definitely helped as far as cutting down my “episodes” to normal but I don’t feel any different at all.

I sleep a lot better now that Dr. Lewis removed my adenoids and tonsils and trimmed my uvula. Even with cpap my throat was closing down. So it is more than just prescribing a cpap. The reason I went in was because she specializes in the Inspire system. Unfortunately, I wasn’t a candidate for the implant.

Insurance wouldn’t pay for clinic study. They did the home test. Told me I was mild. Got a machine. Know it’s probably bull cause how many die from it. But I’ll be honest while not a fan I don’t snore anymore and I sleep way deeper. Just turned 56 and I went from going to the bathroom 3 times a night to maybe 1 time. I don’t wake up near as much and don’t toss and turn. While I think sleep apnea is ******** for life saving. I do think it helps a married couple sleep better together.
I slept on the couch for years because I hated to bother my wife. Now I get to sleep with her and she’s not to tired to fix me a sandwich next day because I kept her up snoring!! Haha

No clue what your situation is, but here is my experience with sleep tests.

I took one about 12 years ago, looking for apnea. My father was diagnosed with apnea. They didn’t find it in me... but did label me as narcoleptic. They prescribed me Ritalin and told me to take it as needed (essentially I took it after lunch most days cause that’s when I was tired the most). The Ritalin certainly made me stay awake. My sleep, however, still didn’t feel thorough.

Several years later I got my tonsils taken out and I worked pretty hard on my diet (eating real foods, balanced, etc...). Removing the tonsils and changing my diet did so much more for my sleep than anything the sleep study did. Removing the tonsils also stopped my snoring, which I believe was a huge problem for my restlessness and made my wife ecstatic. It really changed both of our lives.

Anywho, good luck.

I basically know I have obstructed sleep apnea. I eat pretty healthy and exercise 4-5 days a week. I had been using a mouthpiece but it is killing the alignment of my teeth and jaw so that’s why I’m looking to go to a cpap

Forgot to add that I also have my tonsils and adenoids out

I went ot Somnus in Flowood and it was fine. They sent my prescription to Hometown Medical and they were a disaster, though. Whoever you go to for your sleep study, just don't go to Hometown Medical for your supplies.

As for whoever was asking about going to sleep, they asked me if I wanted a prescription for an Ambien, so I'm assuming they would offer you one of those at some point if you couldn't get to sleep. I didn't feel like I slept at all during the study, but they were able to get all the info they needed, though.

Your family physician can order the in-home sleep study. You don't have to go to a specialist to have it done.

Same. My snoring has stopped and my episodes went down but after 6+ months I don’t feel any different at all. Kind of annoying.

Sleep apnea is REAL deadly, just so everyone knows. Carrie Fischer and Reggie White both died from it, among many other unfortunately. Spend 5 minutes on google to learn more.

My doctor told me that snoring (I suppose an indication of sleep apnea) can also cause heart problems, such as heart enlargement. So while it may not kill you in one incident, it can lead to long term issues.

Honestly, I don't know many, or maybe any, men who do not snore.

That was me asking about not being able to go to sleep. I already take a sleeping pill every night, so something would be necessary, especially during a sleep study. My doctor recommended that I call and get an appointment for one. I'll do that after the first of the year.
