I overheard an older man at the basketball game tonight telling another blue hair that he was at the Ole Miss game yesterday and talked with Pete Boone. Boone told him the reason Snead is entering the draft is b/c he's afraid he won't be the starter next year.

Really Pete, Really?

I think Nutt was on record after the Cotton that Snead would get the first snaps in the spring, but the competition was open. In other words, even if he was the starter in the first week, there would be a much quicker hook than there was this year. Imagine what that would do to his draft status if he got benched his senior year for a RS sophomore or RS freshman?

in BCS football in 2009? If so, this is not completely crazy. However, it would be surprising to me if he got beat out. Snead also knows the team next year won't match what they've already done in the past 2 years.

he actually won the Henig Trophy for most picks with a nice, round 20. He was tied in the regular season.

The only way he wouldn't have started if he came back would be if he got injured.

Which brings up a question. Is Snead the first 20 TD / 20 INT quarterback in Div. I-A? I have no idea, but I'd guess if there are any others, there aren't many of them.

the reason Snead went pro is because he had been in college for 4 years and was ready to make some money. That and the fact that his coach has no idea how to coach a quarterback made it an easy decision. Pro scouts watch film of him and see that he has all the tools. They will dismiss a lot of the problems he had because they know he has had very poor coaching.

I'm talking about his confidence in himself and his abilities. Fair or not, he's shown at least a small (if not huge) aversion to competition for playing time.

That, combined with the fact that we lose the only decent linemen on the team and our two best skill position players, I think he just believed it wasn't worth it. I wanted him to stay. As hit or miss as he was this year, you can't substitute for two years as a starting SEC QB or the 19 wins he had as a starter.

At the same time, I think the drop off will be less than I thought it would have been at the beginning of the year. He really seemed to regress.

1. If there is even a smidgen of a chance that he may not be the starter, why take that chance? His draft stock may not be great now, but it will be nada if he gets beaten out by Nathan Stanley.

2. They lose McCluster, Hodge, 3-4 o-linemen with one of the returners being Sowell, his TE which was another o-lineman in that offense, and the fullback. That would concern me if I was him. Ole Miss also loses most of their secondary, their top linebacker, and at least a couple of d-linemen.

3. He regressed this season under Nutt.

4. Nutt and Austin having issues with each other with him potentially being caught up in the middle.

5. I think there will be a rookie salary cap coming into effect next year.

6. You look at the draft class. If I was an NFL team and you have a choice to draft between Snead, McCoy, Tebow, or Bradford, I would take probably Bradford first and then Snead. Especially with Mallett staying at Arkansas. Snead is a project, but his skills translate better to the NFL in many ways than those other guys.

I think he is smart to do this, but I'm sure that Ole Miss is going to do everything in their power to try to make sure he comes back. In hindsight, he should have left last year.

until this year of course. In candor, I just get a kick out of all the Nutt/QB talk, and like to point out facts every once in a while. Lee was much better last year -- under Croom.

Actually, that hardly means anything. If you knew our offense last year, you'd know that all he ever had to do was throw some little short pass. On the other hand, this year, the quarterback was actually asked to back the defense up. That resulted in him throwing some arm punts, and as the saying goes, "You just can't fix stupid."

yes, of course Mullen is a very good QB coach. But this year Lee threw something like 4 TD's and 17 INT's, which was a nasty digression from where he was last year. Of course no one has said that -- even with those ****** results -- Mullen sucks with QB's.

Nutt, on the other hand, is blamed for Snead's 20 picks. I keep going back to he question of whether Nutt should be praised for the 3 TD's in the first half of the Vandy game, or blasted for the 3 TD's in the second half. At some point it's on Snead.

Matt Jones did just fine in the NFL. Maybe Snead should come back to Ole Miss and try cocaine and see how that works for him.

And isn't Alex Smith starting for the 49ers?

Biggest draft bust? Let's see- Ryan Leaf? Akili Smith? Andre Ware? Todd Marinovich? And those are the guys that I remember off of the top of my head from the NFL Network's top draft bust show.

Mullen also has produced a Heisman winner in Tim Tebow whose numbers drastically dropped without him. You kind of glossed over that. Not to mention Chris Leak improved enough to lead his team to a National Championship.

Nutt has Jones and Clint Stoerner. I daresay that Alex Smith has been more successful than Stoerner. Mutt could definately tell us though. And Nutt inherited him from Danny Ford. So, two of his QB's that made it to the NFL were brought in by someone else.

And as far as Tyson Lee- did you forget about the miraculous improvement of Chris Relf? You know- the guy that Nix couldn't stop?

when you choose to only read subject lines as opposed to entire posts. You're still a good, thoughtful poster though. One of the few left here.

Regarding the Smith thing. If it is me, I think the fact that Mullen had a hand in turning that guy into the No. 1 pick in the draft says wonders about his ability to coach QBs.

If it's not me, then disregard.

I was simply pointing out that, under Mullen (who is recognized as a superb QB coach, and I actually agree that he is), Lee looked awful. In fact, he looked even worse than he did under Croom.

so possibly 3 returning starters on the OL (Sowell, Massie, Rishaw Johnson).

But its definitely going to be a year for the younger players to get alot of playing time next year on offense.

The ******** started right where he said he talked to Boone and Boone told him that. No AD is going to tell any johnny come lately off the street that information even if it was true. That is just some reassurance between folks that they are alright next year at the qb position and don't worry about anything.
