Really because our bigs are 6-4 and 6-5. Same height as Cunane.
Defending the opponent’s big post players has been an issue for the Lady Cards for decades, but this year is different as we have sufficient size on the roster. Dixon contributed last night, but freshman Cochran was a fraction of what she has been this season. If you are looking for a reason as to why we lost to NCST, add Smith, Van Lith and Balogun having uncharacteristic performances.
BTW, Dixon is 6’5”, Cochran is 6’3” and Parker is 6’4”. With Evans, Smith, Balogun and Van Lith on this roster, it is hard to justify playing more than one “big” at a time.

If we had Shook we would be fine. Dixon just isn’t the caliber of Shook. Cochran I believe will get there but she definitely played like a freshman last night.
We rebounded fine against Syracuse who is the largest team we will face all year I believe. We don’t really have a shot blocker (next year Sydney falls into that category). Not hitting shots is a problem. Not getting to the FT line is a problem. Missing layups is a problem. Sloppy TOs is a problem. Over all size on this team really isn’t a negative.
Cunane is one of the best we will face all year because of her efficiency. But more alarming is how more athletic, quicker and more explosive between positions 2-4.

UConn won’t destroy anybody on the boards they don’t have a lot of size. My concern is very bad passing by everybody plus our bigs can’t hold onto the ball. These things are correctable if we work on it. It is not that noticeable when we play weaker teams but the top teams will tear us apart because of it.

You win games by shooting bette than your opponent and outrebounding them. Louisville didn't last night. They'll work on it. I checked outside. The sky isn't falling. The sun did come up. It's one loss.
Agreed - one loss. They had certain things they needed to work on before losing. They will be fine. Again, if you make too many mistakes they just add up beyond being able to recover (see last night’s game). I too, however, would love to see more pressing. Lots of bodies available. Make the other team burn time getting the ball up court and wear them out.
With the exception of the North Carolina game, we’ve been struggling on offense because we’re not passing enough. Evans is the only player on this team who can beat a single defender off the dribble consistently. Everyone else needs to realize that they should not be driving to the basket unless the passing offense has given her the advantage over her defender.
Passing has been a problem most of the season. Ill advised passes and last night was no exception. Even Dana was guilty. HVL also underestimated the speed and athleticism of our opponents by making passes over the middle from sideline to sideline, but she’s a freshman these things will be cleaned up.
I think in order for us to be a better team we need to work on the fundamentals of the game. We are definitely a better team than the way we played last night. A loss like this should help us work on our weaknesses that were exposed last night. It was just a matter of time before we lost and I would rather lose now instead of later.
South Carolina may get more than we do, but I have seen UConn and Stanford play many times this season and neither would damage us in any significant way on the boards. Not a chance. Stanford hates HATES physical contact. I will say that I can wait to play any of the teams mentioned.
We put ourselves into major disadvantage when we have Dana, Mykassa, and Van Lith in at the same time. They are small by any standards, and when all three are in causes issues with small forward, switches on screens, and more. Add to it that Mykassa rarely takes a shot, and you are playing four on five on the offensive end. They are not quick enough to compensate.
I like the fact that she’s a 3rd ball handler and takes the pressure off of Dana and HVL from handling it all the time. Allows them to go get set up on offense. She’s also tenacious on D even on bigger players.
She is next year with Verhulst. With Liz, Cochran, Ramani and Sydney they will have lots of size. If Sydney has some hops like Sonja has alluded to...then all of sudden they have a true shot blocker. I don’t care if she can do much of anything else her first year. Block or alter shots and she will have to get minutes
Having someone who can disrupt shots in the middle and make rebounding harder is super crucial and having that extra size will help round the team out.
We just landed a 6-2 forward in the ‘22 class. I still think being 6-2 6-3 is good enough in the women’s game but something just seemed off vs nc state. Olivia seemed a little low energy at times and the team was dragging their feet. I think we win that game if we play average ball
As long as she will continue to shoot her open shots. We have seen that we are good enough to play 4 against 5 on offense. Kas does a lot and brings many good things to the court but if she will not shoot her open shots I am not sure it matters how many other good things she brings.
I think the thinking is whether you want Kas or even some of the girls shooting the ball or do you want Dana shooting it? The downfall to this is somewhere down the line, a team will find a way to shut Dana down, Dana has a bad night, or a team shuts everybody down but Dana.
I think any player in the game should shoot a wide open shot unless there is a better shot available. This needs to be what is coached and how we operate now and going forward.
I was disappointed in our performance against NCST because we played so poorly. Then I thought about last year and how badly we played against FSU. It was the worst game I had ever seen Jasmine Jones play. We only lost 2 games last year and hopefully that will be the case this year.
I agree we need to have more people scoring than just Dana. If that is the game plan we won’t go very far because good coaches will come up with a defense to shut her down. Neither UConn or USC looked very good to me, both teams relied on 1 player to do their scoring. Eventually that one player will have a bad game I hope for them it is not during the NCAA Tournament.

I think the message from the coaches is clear as evident by Kaz and Kunno playing more minutes. What I like about the women is that they seem to be more willing to play a role to help their team instead of being the main scorer or focus. Dana speaks to this specifically by saying it was hard to be patient for her first 2 years but look where she’s at now. It was all worth it to her. Coaches are saying it but you also have to convince the players to believe in their teammates and in some cases believe in themselves and play with confidence.
