So, first Shaka turns down NC State, now Gregg Marshall does as well...

Not sure what they were offered, but Shaka must have his eyes on something else or something bigger to not cash in on his run. If his team missed the dance next year (very possible) then he's lost his chance for the time being.

Marshall suprises me a bit more - he missed the NCAA although he did win the NIT. He does have some potential upside next year if he could makea sweet 16 run or something, but them both turning it down surprised me.

I would have been surpised if they both turned down MSU as well had we done a coaching search. Better pay, better facilities and a basketball conference that isn't overpowering at the moment.

but Mississippi State can go hire pretty much any mid major it wants, right?

NC State hasnt won the ACC since 1989
They one have one Sweet 16 since 1989

It's not a real good job- in spite of what Valvano did in the early 1980's. They will always lag behind Duke and NC. Always.

VCU coach Shaka Smart, who led the Rams to the 2011 Final Four, has agreed in principle to an eight-year contract extension, the school announced Monday. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The news came hours after word got out that Smart did not wish to be considered for the vacant N.C. State coaching position

and they may not- Shaka got some extra bargaining power when he made the FF

But alot of people thought we would have a hard time finding a coach like Mullen- yet lil ol Misipi Tate hired the top OC in the nation from a 2 time NC school.

never know until you try

Our football and basketball situations are and were NOTHING alike. We had nowhere to go, but up, with our football program. That is hardly the case with basketball.

Coaches look at the fact they havent won the conference in 22 years. They look at Duke and NC being in the conference.

The NC State job is a tough sell- and what they are going thru backs that up. UPig hired the first person they wanted. Tenn hired a coach in less than a week. The NC State job has been open for what- 2 months since it was announced they were changing coaches?

We can make a good hire- there is just no doubt about it

..we're not going to get the hot mid major Head Coach to come to Starkville. If you think we get Shaka or Marshall, Coach, you are kidding yourself.

But we can go get the Dan Mullen of college basketball. A young assistant, who has coached under a nationally successful head coach and gained experience, with a reputation as a good recruiter, and preferably ties to the area. Somebody with a lot of energy.

That's what you are looking for. And you go get the closest thing to that that will come. Of course, it's anybody's guess as to whether or not they will be successful. But we know what we're getting out of RS at this point.

Those 2 schools also have the resources, name recognition, etc. that we don't have.

Can we make a good hire? Of course. Will he be better than what we currently have? Probably not.

Keep in mind that Peaches has no idea what college coaches look at when they are evaluating their futures. How could he? He doesn't know any. Now he may have some knowledge of what kind of thought processa guy goes through when he's thinking about leaving Charleston High forWest Tallahatchie, but beyond that, he knows very little.

Think about it. He'snow taking the route that somehowMSU is a better job than NC State because NC State will ALWAYS be behind Duke and UNC.Well in the grand scheme of things, MSU will always bebehind Kentucky and Florida. So that should put that arguement to rest - but it won't. The fact is, if you ask people who really know, they will give NC State the nod. Hell, John Calipari once flirted with NC State. Does anybody ever think someone like him would even think about moving to Starkville?

Shaka had his chance to parlayhis 17 days of fame into abetterjob. The guy's team finished behind Hofstra, GeorgeMason, and Old Dominion in the CAA standings and he passes on NC State.

Not very smart, Shaka.
