move from Nashville to Ridgeland, (Yeah, I moved from Nashville to Ridgeland) I stopped by the ole DMV on Hwy 51. Stopped by at 4:15 on a Thursday. Went inside with all of my stuff. Was pleased that there was no line. The nice lady looked at all of my documents and assured me that I had everything I needed. Told me that I had to turn in my TN plates. Fine, except I didn't have a screwdriver. Asked the lady how long they would be open. 5:00 was her answer. Told her that I would go get a screwdriver and be right back. She volunteered to loan me some tools. Great. I took a Phillips head and a flat head, stepped outside and took off the TN plate. Took about 45 seconds. I stepped back to the door. It's approximately 4:18 at this point. The door was locked. I knocked, waited, knocked, waited. A lady came cracked open the door, told me that they were relocating the next day so they were closing early to pack. Much discussion ensued. I left without MS plates but in possession of two Madison County screwdrivers. To make the sports related. I went to a bar right down 51 where i had met Bobby Hall a couple of months back and shot pool. Good to be back in MS.

That's funny. Reminds me of the time I went to one of the license satellite offices here (in a grocery store) to get my driver's license renewed. They had the ropes set up to form a line, but there was absolutely no one in line so I just skipped the ropes and went directly to the gal at the desk. She promptly, and very rudely, told me I'd have to go back and go through the ropes before I went to her counter. I told her I wasn't going to do it, and asked for her name. She wouldn't give it to me. And she was not wearing ID.

So ... I got my renewal done anyway, and called the County Clerk (I can't remember the name of the office), told him the story and that she wouldn't give me her name. He chuckled, and knew who she was right away. Said he'd move her back downtown to the court house so he could keep a closer eye on her, and if she did something like that again he'd fire her. He had a number of complaints about her. He appreciated my call and thanked me for it. That was the damdest thing I'd ever seen.

But worth it to just swing by Brunos and get your tag. I've always said the only difference in MS and AL is Huntsville!

You spend the first half of your life trying to get away from home and the second half trying to get back...some old dude told me that once. I was young and didn't believe him. Now I understand what he meant.

They've got a new dedicated high tech facility on Brown's Ferry Rd in Madison now (where Oh! Brian's used to be) and it's really neat. All the folks I've dealt with there have all been friendly. And they have a place to sit down ... I've stood in line at Parkway City over an hour on occasion and no place to sit. The new location is about a hundred times bigger than the one in Parkway City. Not sure if they still have any in grocery stores.

Huntsville is an oasis in a desert of mediocrity ... or ignorance.

I've never lived in Jackson or the area, but I have no desire to move back to Mississippi. I grew up in Meridian.

I like living in Huntsville ... it's larger and more cosmopolitan than Jackson, and just a pleasant place to live. I saw a survey a couple of days ago of the best small/mid-sized cities in which to live. Huntsville was 30th in the nation, but primarily because of the lack of infrastructure (decent roads). Jackson didn't make the list.

I had some such intentions to move back. Now my ex is there. No way in hell. Huntsville suits me just fine since I don't have to live with her anymore.

And yet another time when I question my wife's unending desire to move back.

Lived in Meridian for most of my life. Retired now and plan to move to the AL coast before long. Meridian has improved over the years as far as restaurants and the Riley center is concerned, but still a dead town. Looking forward to the move.

I don't think you needed to point out that Jacskon didn't make the list, since the ranking didn't include obesity, poverty, crime, or worst schools.

I, too, just moved back to Mississippi--in my case from Nashville to Clinton. We're glad we're back and feel like it was a great decision--closer to family, more State games, sense of contributing to our beleaguered home state. However, I'd forgotten how hard it is to get things done here. I can't match your story, but it took me three trips to the Hinds County Courthouse to get our car registered. Getting simple stuff done at work--basic "follow directions" stuff--often takes way too much effort. Duplicitousness, half-assery, incompetence, and efficiency abound. It's weird, but we've had culture shock moving to our own home.

Kind of like spending the first nine months of your life trying to get out of one and the rest of your life trying to get back in one.

So when you got to the pub, you had three screwdrivers?

The rankin/Madison DA would like to speak to you about petit larceny.
