So, how'd it go?

I've heard from some of the volunteers and organizers of Top of the Hops that 1500 were expected and about 2800 actually attended, making it the most attended Top of the Hops event to date.

stuff you can get at Kroger/Fresh Market I'm guessing this is because of Mississippi beer laws or whatever.

Anyways, there were a few I had never heard, like Yazoo Brewing Company from Nashville. They had a good one called Hop Project.

It was a fun time.

If they had given you a say 6 ounce sample the lines for other samples would have been much shorter. All in all I had a great time.

The MS beer laws kept out some good stuff, but they had a lot of stuff I'd never tried. The VIP area (I'm loaded and drive a 78k car) had some awesome beers. I actually found a lambic in there that I liked. Best part of the event was the pairing food with beer demonstration. Had a hot dog steamed with Sam Light, topped with mac n' cheese and bacon. Yes, mac n' cheese. Amazing stuff.

/I was proud of myself for successfully walking that buzzed line and never falling off the cliff into total inebriation.

If you don't plan on being in Starkville the Friday night before the Memphis game, I recommend acquiring a nice gameday hangover from Zoo Brew.

I went to the last one and it's a damn good time. Very nice selection of beers as well. Dogfish Head and Rogue had decent setups (what else do you need?) and several local home brewers were there with decent beers as well...

Try it out if you haven't before...

and will support cool, fun events. It bodes well for having more and more stuff like that here, regardless of what the quivering masses out in the 'burbs think. SPS had good representation there, although surprisingly I did not spot catvet.

By the way, my favorite new beer ended up being Jackwhacker -- but I don't remember which brewery made it (I was well into beerfest by that time.) Anyone?

Tried some of their stuff for the first time when I came back down to MS for my wedding. I was pretty surprised to see something in MS I couldn't get in Maryland.

Wish I could have made it Saturday, but had a prior engagement. Maybe on day MS will stronger beer to be sold. Linus has said that Yazoo brew is coming soon to Mississippi. Now if we could just get New Belgium. Word is that the large beer distributors do not want the increased competition in our state.

We went and had a good time.

Maybe that will let the politicians know that we want better beer in our state.

I can't even get that stuff in NoVa, DC or MD. Seems they distribute to TN and AR though.

As for the distributors not wanting more competition, well of course they don't. 99% of population drinks Bud, Miller, or Coors products so why would they want to deal with either a) losing portions of sales for smaller, craft-centric distributors, or b) dedicating resources to carry multiple brands that will make up a whopping 1% or less of their business. They just see it as an additional hassle they don't need. And I can assure you the last thing BMC (Bud, Miller/Coors) wants to see is a bunch of rednecks putting down their light lagers for a Yazoo, Dogfish Head, or Terrapin.
