Apparently a lot of people on here don't like Sugarland...a little suprised. I will say I want to see them perform. My wife has asked several times if they have said when tickets will go on sale. I think you will make up the difference and then some with Sugarland ticket sales. Maybe I(the marketing department) is over estimating their drawing power, but I think Sugarland alone will draw more than the spring game would, so with the two being tied together you should see a good attendance.

At worst, you get a date night with the wife which involves her being glad you took her to a football practice. I will admit, if you don't have someone to watch the kids, and they have no interest in Sugarland, it is not worth the price.

3)A ****** live show. Strike three.

My problem is that I always attend the first half and then leave. I can't sit through a halftime of nothing just to see the 3rd and 4th stringers in the second half, after being outside since the early morning. Not a damn chance I go to Sugarland, so I won't be attending. Although, it is pretty awesome to toting your cooler into davis wade and guzzling some brews, with your feet propped up, while watching bull in the ring on the jumbotron before the game starts.

Opposite sides of the stadium should do the trick. Or some armbands like you'd get in a bar and well placed guards/bouncers.

I've always taken my kids to the Spring game - like someone said, easier to take them to that where they can run around some, etc. We only take them to one or two games during the season, cost being one reason. I'm not going to pay $25 a piece for my kids to go to Spring practice and hear a band that they care NOTHING about. We have friends that drive from Natchez every year for SBW and bring their kids too - look forward to it every year. So now, they will drive up here for that weekend and sure, they'll get to see baseball - but they are in the same boat and won't want to pay $100 to go to the spring game (practice) on top of everything else that weekend. Should have given people a choice. I'm not happy about it at all.

cook a little, go watch baseball and take in the sites but no way I'm giving in to Sugarland which also means no Spring game. I hate it, wanted to see Prescott but not for $100. DS, I like your split ticket plan best.

There should be no charge for the "game". They have plenty of time to come up with some way of paying for the concert but watching the game free. If nothing else, just clear the place and then let everybody reenter. Or as someone said, put the non-concert goers on once side and empty that side. I doubt the concert will draw 30,000 which is the approximate capacity of one side of the field.<div>

Think about all the blue hairs and non fanatical fans that we ***** about all the time that never stand up blah blah blah, you think they are going this year? Those people makeup the majority of the normal patrons at the Spring game. You think those younger parents are going to pay that amount of $$ for their kids to run around on the field throwing rubber footballs? Its surprising to me too that you know 12 people that have declared they are going to a concert that details haven't been released about yet, that tickets haven't gone on sale for yet and at a venue they would never have gone to before, all for Sugarland?

I mean obviously it's me and my wife.. and then we have a couple who is going only for the concert (not State fans), 4 other couples we know from State.. 12 is a small number

you could be right on the rest of it, I was exaggerating based on the lame **** posted in this thread. Personally I've never understood why the Spring practice event even happens. I went once and said I'd never go back (even when I went to SBW).... I guess the AD found a way to get me to come back.

So $5 is too much for me to watch a practice and $25 is too much for you to watch a concert.. it's good we established that.

If you don't want to come, shut up and stay home. Don't ***** because you don't like Sugarland, because you have to pay 25 bucks, because it's practice, etc. etc.... If we have only 25K show up for the spring game, which I think it will be more, that is $625,000 in ticket sales. Sugarland may get 150K of that ???? That leaves damn near a half million for MSU. Plus all the concessions. As Stricklin has said, this is a first of it's kind and I think it's worth a shot. You have a family friendly huge country band coming in that could be a good time for most, plus getting to watch our football team scrimmage. I'm sure you all have blown 25 bucks on something more worthless than this in your lives. Now what we do with that money is a different story. It should stay right where it was spent to help pay for the expansion.

I know for a fact that Msu paid 500,000 dollars to get sugarland so most if not all of ticket sales will go to that

Yeah, I don't care what they announced. I know that the stadium minus the endzone and the east club level and upper deck held 41,400 at full capacity in 1999. I also know that the west upper deck was empty or very near it. In addition, the east side of the stadium was very sparsely occupied, and the west side, while appearing full from a distance, had plenty of room to move about. So there wasn't really anywhere near 34,127 fans at that stadium that night.

I'll tell you another secret. The 2009 spring game attendance, 31,606? The 31K number was pre-decided, and it was 6:06 PM when they finalized the number for annoucement. Spring game numbers, wherever you go, are based on the ability of an SID to eyeball the crowd and pick a number he thinks will look good in the paper, and that not too many people will laugh too hard at.

You're basically substituting actual fans of the spring game with everyday Clay County/ Ricks All American Cafe patrons.

Quoting a great tweet I read today:

1.) It is a horrible idea
2.) No intelligent person will pay 25$ to see Sugarland. (and all the dumbasses who respond by saying they're going solidify this)
3.) Once again people in charge lacked the testicular fortitude to get any band that isn't rated G
4.) Starkville is labeled as a cow-infested backwater by outsiders, and bringing in country acts only perpetuates that stereotype.

I can recall one country show that was great in Starkville. One year Pat Green played and it was phenomenal. Next year was Moe, and that was another great show. Let's branch out here. Mississippi is the "The Birthplace of America's Music". We're ingrained with blues/rock'n'roll. Almost every form of music from The Rolling Stones to Pink Floyd etc.. is influenced by an artist born in OUR STATE and we can only bring a crappy music band called Sugarland (they're labeled as country) but I consider country to be Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash. Then I'm expected to pay to watch a spring game even though I don't won't to go to a ****** show afterwards. Don't give me the whole support your team thing because the money is going to this and such & such. Let em know up front where the money is going besides the dumb bi*** they let on stage to belt out what some people sadly consider to be country music. If you wanna hear country music then listen to John Prine.

Exactly. Many people, mainly families that normally go to the spring game, and want to go to the spring game this year are staying home now, or at least not attending the game. Some country music fans will now go to the concert, probably not the entire spring game. Whoever thought this thing up needs their head checked. Nothing about this makes sense. I had planned to take my family but won't be going now, probably not even coming up to Starkville that weekend at this point anymore. I have talked to several other people with children that are in the same situation. I really hope someone realizes they were wrong about this, can admit it, and fix it.

That's the best act that has played in Starkville period. They're folk rock and definitely not "pseudo mainstream country." They at least write their own music and can all play multiple instruments. This is a joke.

If you can set your music preferences and bias aside, you should realize that Sugarland is one of the top grossing country acts out there right now.
Most colleges can't afford them, I know, I have tried. They are well over 300k, and U2 is well over a million dollars, if not more, most of the large acts just pick where they play and get 90% of ticket sales. $25 is also a cheap ticket for them, let alone add football into the mix. It is a killer cross promotional idea.

Here is actual figures
<div class="HeaderTitle"><span id="_ctl10__ctl1_titleBOSummary">BoxOffice Summary for Sugarland

<td><div class="stat"><span id="_ctl10__ctl1_lblQB1">139</span></div></td>

<td><div class="stat"><span id="_ctl10__ctl1_lblQB2">8,112</span></div></td>

<table><tbody><tr><td><div class="title"><span id="_ctl10__ctl1_titleQB3">Avg. Gross:</span></div></td>
<td><div class="stat"><span id="_ctl10__ctl1_lblQB3">US$355,935</span></div></td></tr></tbody></table>
This is average gross, which means it includes earlier shows when they were not as big.

You guys on here all are proud of how progressive the marketing department has been, this is the same line of thinking. So stop complaining. This is the type of events progressive universities do.
We need more traditions and things like this. This is progress and a good thing. Music is just so polarizing, people use to go to concerts and just listen!

It is a horrible idea to take something that has, in its entire existence, been free to something that costs $25 a head. I hate country music but I'd think the same if it were Radiohead or the Black Keys or whatever else. Just look at the backlash Netflix faced last year and that was much less of an increase. Make it two separate events and don't alienate the fan base from the program thats been generating positive energy the last three years.

Dont think we ever did during my time in Starkville. Then again, I spent the majority of that under the influence and could have forgotten paying. Fortunately I was gone for most of the Croom Error. Regardless, separate tickets and a little progressive sectioning could do a lot for this whole thing. Game only $0-$10, cool. Game+Postgame entertainment pass $25. Guards, gates, wristbands, tasers, and good to go.

Give me a job, Stricklin. Baton Rouge sucks.
