So, I had an Iphone5 in one hand and a S3 in the other

Being an Iphone user all of these years I thought for sure I would go with the iphone5. Once I compared them side by side, it was clear to me that Samsung is simply a better phone. I was shocked at how intuitive Android is and by the features offered that you don't get on previous generations of iphone. I did find out from my friend that ios6 added some of these features (reject call with message) but there are other things about the phone I love. Pinching the home screen brings all other pages tiled on the front is really cool. The way it gives you address book options when you start to type in the telephone number. The easy access to battery and expandable and removable memory slot. The size of the screen and the actual look of the display is better.

My friend is a hard core Iphone guy and I've heard every argument in the book, but when I put everything aside and had to pick, the S3 is where I went.

BTW...It survived my own (accidental) 5 foot drop test on sidewalk virtually unscathed. Just one little nick on the corner. - I put the powerskin back on it.

The phones all do 99% of the same stuff so if you are choosing your phone based on the look and feel you are a fool. The reason people buy Apple is because of the control over apps and the iTunes ecosystem that makes everything amazingly easy to load, pay for, manage, update, and use on other devices. You also have the capability of throwing any pictures or video up to an AppleTV. You can instantly stream things to your PC. You can move things to a shared cloud.

You can do most of this with Android with a lot of tweaking but it's error prone. I've seen droves of people moving from Android to iPhone because of the stability and features, not the technology. Android is a great phone OS but the Apple ecosystem is more of a way of life.

I agree

I've had an iPhone since March of 2011 & my wife has been using my old android phone because her blackberry crapped out. I wanted to wait to see all the reviews of the iPhone 5 before we upgraded our phones. There are way too many bugs in the new iOS & in the phone, itself. So, we talked about it & we are deciding to go with the S3. It's bigger & better technology in the S3. I do think the iPhone is a better quality with the metal, but we will get an otterbox to make up for the plastic on the S3. Plus, they are starting to come out with alarm clock docking stations for Android phones. That's a plus. We're actually heading to Verizon tomorrow to upgrade.

I'm thinking of going with the 4S or possibly the 5 when my contract can be renewed later this month. I've been with AT&T for several years and I've been happy with them (yes, I know we're supposed to shop local and support the local company CSpire but I've not had the best of experiences with them). And no matter what I get, I'm getting an Otterbox... I've had my 3GS for nearly two years with no scratches and I've dropped it accidentally quite a few times...

Went with S3 at CSpire

Wife and I had older generation Iphones. They were way way ahead in 2007 -2010 on the rest of the comp. That is NOT the case anymore. If you like to be limited on what you can do on a phone, by all means by an Iphone. It is a way of life, albeit, Apple's way of life.

And unless you have woman hands and get off at panoramic views, every aspect of S3 is better or at least a wash in specs in rare cases. For me, whatever Smartphone I chose, I wanted big screen with a big battery (replaceable). If the U.S. would have gotten the quad-core international version S3, their would be no discussion. I would suggest doing what original poster stated, compare side by side. And keep your old plan!

I currently have the Galaxy I, and it was great for a few months. Ever since then (I'm almost to the 2 year mark), it has been such a ****** phone - freezing up, running very slowly, going to safe made routinely and deleting all my widgets, not cutting on until I pull the battery out and put back in, etc, etc.

I fully expect the same **** from the Galaxy III, so I'll be going to the iPhone. I'm burned out on these crummy smart phones.

Could be wrong, but from reviews, this new Exynos on S3 is being that it is quadcore.

Huh? If the phones are so similar functionally, it makes perfect sense to choose between the two based on feel and appearance.

This is why I moved from Android to iPhone. There is only so much processing power you can give a phone before it reaches the saturation point.

Good man, good man. You have chosen wisely. The S3 is simply a great phone. I don't have one, but the four guys here at work that have them love them. They all have them rooted and have made numerous speed and performance tweaks. I've kidded that we ought to be running some of our engineering applications off their phones rather than 4 year old PCs.

How in the world could you judge the SIII based on your experiece with a first gen galaxy?? So far... The SIII blows the doors off of anything else Ive ever used.

I switched from an Android phone to an iPhone4S 6 months ago. Overall, I'm happy with the iPhone, but I was really surprised by the lack of any ability to customize anything. It really is Apple's way or no way. Still not used to that. The iPhone gets most things right and in some ways I like it better. But it's just the simple things that piss you off but you cannot change that get me about it. Just the latest example. Sent an e-mail out to my tennis team yesterday. One of the guys responds that I've sent it to his old address yet again. Finally figured out that even though I had his contact info changed, when you send an e-mail it still has the old deleted address in memory and it defaults to that address as the first choice when you want to send him an e-mail. It won't default to the correct address as the 1st choice until you send more messages to that address than you sent to the old one. And there's no way to delete the old address, even though I've already deleted it from his contact info. How could Apple have not even considered that some of my friends might sometimes change their email address?

Because I had the same issues with my previous smart phone, so I got the Galaxy because I heard how wonderful it was and how it fixed all of those issues. A couple months later all those problems were back. Now, we have the GIII, and I'm hearing all of this **** again. It's déjà vu. All of you are raving about a phone that's been out for such a short time. Give it some time, and see how it's functioning. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't wanna be stuck with another piece of ****, delivered from the same manufacturer that gave me my previous piece of ****.

I've owned 3 Android phones and never had any of that happen except the occasional lockup. And you said it . . . pull the battery if and when that ever occurs, and you're good. Try pulling the iphone battery to fix it . . . oh wait, you can't.

I'm sure no one ever has to reboot a computer, cable/sat box, or anything electronic due to a lockup or slowdown, though. Put iTunes on anything, and watch the issues commence.

Everyone with Android needs to DL the advanced app killer app

Yes, it even kills itself, and it makes a difference in time between charge ups as well as overall operating speed.

In my old age (over 40), I am valuing stability over features. A SGIII fan works in my office. He's constantly telling me about cool stuff his phone can do, but half the time he's like "hold on my usb port is acting screwy right now", or "dangit the ftp server on it stopped again", or "wait let me reboot it first".

Me...no thanks on that.

Apple irritates me to with their insistence to do things their way. Thank goodness there is finally a google-made youtube app for iphone now. The old youtube app that defaulted from Apple had no good way to get URLs from youtube videos. Your only choices were to email the link to somewhere, tweet it, or add to favorites. (I usually selected to email it, and then copied the URL out of the email message that it composed).

Ive had all the iPhones leading up the the 4GS and all of them acted squirrely from time to time. Then, when I realized the 4GS was the same **** crammed in a different box I decided to make the switch to android. I got the LG Thrill and yes it froze up a few times, but I didnt feel like it was a show stopper or anything. Ive had no issues with the SIII and Ive had it since its release several months ago.

I've had my iPad II for about 15 months, and the only issue I've had with it is an app or 2 automatically closing and going to my home screen. I can count on one hand how many times this has happened. Also, I'm thinking this is an app issue (I'm looking at you Weather Channel), not a device issue.

Given how efficient my iPad has run, I'm going to expect similar results with an iPhone.

i wish I had more faith in the android products, because I do not like Apple's nazi-like tactics, but I don't need any more smart phone headaches.

That's what I hate about Android. It can be soooo great - if you take the effort to make it great and constantly stay on top of tweaking it.

And considering that Samsung MANUFACTURES the IPhone A6, they work closer than most even know.

I would suggest doing what I did and comparing them side by side. I was shocked at the difference. The S3 has many features that I will use that aren't available on iphone5. If you are looking at a contact and want to call them, you can just raise it to your ear and it will do so. If you need to silence your phone immediatly for any reason, just turn it face down.

In 24 hours, there has been no lag or issues so far... I'm super pragmatic so if I have problems down the road, I'll be sure to let you know.

I have had the S3 for two weeks and my wife has had the iphone5 for one week,

I was an iPhone user for several years, I had the 3,3GS, 4 and 4s.

I am extremely pleased with the S3 after some of the users here gave me some good tips.

My wife's iPhone 5 is good too, it's what she likes but I am liking the freedom of not being tied to iTunes.

Ok, so is there something else it does other than you can save yourself a half second to silence your phone or save the huge amount of time it takes to hit the call button on your contact?

Otherwise they seem the same to me. I know about the 4g and 3G speeds. I don't give a **** about that.

It is simply the culmination of all the different things. I went into the process expecting to buy an Iphone5. I even told him that I wanted to go with it and he had it in front of me. Because of an issue with porting the number over from the company to me, I had time to walk around and look at the other phones. That is when I waffled on him and told him to change it to the S3. I'm sure there is a lot I don't know about it yet so time will tell if I made the right decision.

My S3 buddy tried to show me its face recognition feature. In theory, you never have to unlock the phone to use it. Just pick it up, it recognizes your face, and unlocks itself. He tried about 8 times and it worked with some delay after the 8th try.

Again...features or stability?

That was my first assumption too. Had to just be something I was missing. But according to the Internets, there really is no way to get rid of the old e-mail address and it will continue to be the first default option every time I want to send an e-mail to that guy until I have sent more e-mails to his new address than to his old one. So I will have to remember his email address (why even bother with having contacts if you're going to have to remember their emails anyway). The only workaround is to use the iPhone search feature to find his contact info, then e-mail him from there. But I still have to remember that everything sent to him has to be done differently than the way I like to do it. Like others have said, with Apple, you'll do it the way they tell you to and like it. The hell with flexibility to suit the user's preferences. It's the Henry Ford approach to painting cars. They can have it any color they want, as long as they want black.

there won't ever be 1 phone to rule them all...

Apple iPhone 5
The Good: Fast, reliable, cool Apple logo, same UI as iPod, iPad and Mac friendly
The Bad: dumbs down their phones so much that its just boring so that idiots like your mom and dad can use it. and they force you to buy everything on the phone from Apple/iTunes, not giving you any choice to save money on content. Can't add memory.
The Ugly: Systematically rapes your wallet and you drink the Apple Kool aid with all the other idiots that develop Stockholm Syndrome with Apple

Samsung Galaxy S III
The Good: Screen shows more colors, easier to read. Turn by Turn works great. NFC makes it easier to share stuff. Can add memory.
The Bad: offers so many options and freedom it can take a few clicks to get to things, opens the door for occasionally slower UI response if you don't your sms/call/browser lists clean
The Ugly: if you have tiny hands like the Burger King guy or you are a small person, its hard to operate with one hand. And even though all the major apps are on Android, some games and a few apps are iPhone only or take a few months to be available on Android.
