Do you just NUT UP and throw 2.0million to O’Conner, see if his magic translates to State, or do you go the young, high-level assistant?? Not asking what Selmon should/would do, I’m asking you guys as your the AD! I know I’m beating a dead horse lol, but … state the case!! Anything is going to be an upgrade, just depends on how high that upgrade could be.

I'm not sure that's true. We fired one of eight active head coaches with a national title. If we hire an assistant with zero head coach experience, it is a real possibility that it is not an upgrade. We probably won't know for 3-5 years.

I don't understand why so many people are OK with firing a coach to hire an unproven replacement. We should expect a sitting P4 head coach, just like we did in 2018.

If O'Connor was interested and we were willing to pay him, I'd love to have him here. He has a track record of success at Virginia. To be sure I think the SEC is a tougher league than the ACC, but the ACC is a strong baseball conference and has pretty recent national title winners and he's one of the active coaches with a title.

Virginia also didn't fall off a cliff after their success so he's got that going for him too.

Every time I see anything about him all I can think about is the arm problems that arose here and at AR when he was pitching coach, he was a Tommy John surgeons dream as pitching coach for whatever reason
The Thunder and Lightening guys addressed this issue on their podcast. It's a good listen, from a couple days ago.

I know a player that the pitched under Wes at State. I asked him specifically about this. Whether Wes’ “methodology” was the cause of the injuries that occurred at the time. He said that is simply not true and he was the reason for the success he had. Absolutely idolized the guy.

Match his current contract with some incentives. With our facilities and fan base that should be enough. 2 m. No.
Should it be enough? Maybe. But everyone is different. He's been at UVA for a long time and obviously has been approached by big programs before. He might just be happy where he is. At the same time, a big salary increase could also sway him. No way to know, but can't just assume a coach will want to leave their program because we have better facilities and more fans.

I got tired of the extended commercials at the beginning and the extended 'rassling talk so don't tune to them anymore. Commercials are a necessary evil but not the entire first segment or more and the 'rasslin to me doesn't fit in w/ the theme of the podcast so..........

Well one reason might be that the guy we fired did have a proven record. He won an NC but then proved definitively that he somehow lost the ability to win at a level anywhere close to acceptable. I would prefer we hire a HC with a proven ability to win but an unproven replacement with promise is still an upgrade to what we had until proven otherwise.

The only thing that is almost certain is the on paper resume of whoever we hire will not be as impressive as the one for the guy we just fired.

Is there some indication he is dying to come here? Or at least leave Virginia? Most people aren’t leaving a long term job in a place where they're reasonably happy for no change in pay other than some additional incentives unless they are pretty massive.

Once we accept that we exist to balance the athletic budget and not win at all costs, it's so much less anxiety. We aspire to be mid and get to the post season. That's it, that's all.

Just saw where Wes Johnson said he was happy at Georgia and doesn't have "plans" to be in Starkville. Nothing strange to comment while your team is still playing. Before he took the Georgia job I never thought of him being an HC, well he has proven me wrong! Hope he is interested.

No. Just message board speculation that gets repeated often enough people start thinking it’s a facts

I'm leaning toward $500K and a first time coach
Makes sense. Three of the last four head coaching hires on campus are 1st timers (Lebby/Purcell/Zimmerman (Soccer)). Also it jives with the reality of having the smallest budget in the SEC.

Well, if the budget doesn't balance then we really will have problems.

Takes several donors willing to throw cash away just to mildly compete. All these budgets are producing no true ROI.

I spoke too soon. I listened yesterday and it was about the Sopranos, a show I enjoyed, but not what I want to listen to when I turn on a State podcast.

I guess they just had a couple of good shows.

I think you make O’Conner say no first. And I get all the non-revenue/nobody outside of a few schools care about baseball, but we can buy national prominence in baseball a lot cheaper than football. And we can buy it in basketball cheaper than football. So from January - June we can buy exposure much cheaper than we can get it from August - December, and we can be in championship conversations for a lot less than football.

So I’m one of the minority on this board I suppose who thinks baseball and basketball provide the better value for the $, but I also realize it takes the revenue generated by football to feed the entire machine. So my reality is reset and my football expectations are 5-6 wins a year, with a ceiling of 8 on a good year based on this current system. Of course I’m hoping Lebby can find a niche to recruit from via the portal and surprise me, but that’s just where I think things are realistically.

Just a thought….I wonder if a certain State Alum who has had a few successful books could help with O’Conner? I believe his son played for him.

I get what you’re saying. So … let’s say Lemonis stayed on till season end. The way things were going, we had NO SHOT at making anyone’s Regional. Don’t get me wrong amazing guy, I’ve met him on multiple occasions, but had the season finished God Poorly missing a Regional, would you have been ok letting him go???

I get everyone’s point, my question is, at the damn end of the day … were we heading for green pastures, or just keeping the ship a-float for the time being? I’m not sold on our AD, but, thought he stepped up. Guess that will remain to be seen
