So If We Pull it Out vs OSU, Will This Be Dan's "Signature Win"?

Up to that point I would say so. I loved beating Urban in The Swamp, but they weren't that great. We were the better team.

I say up to that point because I think if we beat OSU and Auburn, the hype surrounding the LSU game will be unreal. That would be his signature win if he pulled that off.

No, because suddenly OSU will be 'down'. Or at least other fanbases will convince us of that somehow.

Beating Florida down there was definitely a signature win. To say otherwise is ludicrous.

The goalposts would just move again so that it(again) doesn't count...

Forget what the media says. If we win its a signature win.

Top 15 team from a BCS conference at a neutral site on national television to start the year. That's signature because we've never really done that before. OSU will probably win 8 to 10 games this year. If they can get to 9 or 10 wins, that would be the most wins an opponent would have that we would have beaten under Dan Mullen. That's signature.

But the only way it will mean anything is if we follow it up with a solid year. We can't beat OSU week one then finish 6-6. Need to actually do something with it. Get 7 or 8 regular season wins and scare or beat a big name team in conference on national television. OM giving LSU everything they had on national television was their jumping point into the rest of their season and the final recruiting push. We have to do something similar if we want to turn some heads.

I'm not disagreeing, but what kind of record did FL end up with that year? I know they were off, but can't remember the record.

What does it even mean?

Does he get a trophy? In the record books will it have Dan Mullen's signature under it. The fact that nobody can agree on it makes it seem like quite an intangible thing. I mean some of the arguments here are that he just needs one and then after that....What, are we done. In two years we are playing in the SEC championship game, Sam Ponder "Coach Mullen, if you win this game would you say it's your signature win?" Mullen, "Nope, got that one back in August of '13. This would be kind of cool though." I think we've just accepted sports broadcasting so much that we just regurgitate their stupid nomenclature and treat it like it means something.

Like engie said - those that aren't State fans will keep moving the line of what is Mullen's signature win. He got a signature win aGAINST Georgia and Florida in 2010. Then he finally got the SEC West monkey off his back last year. So the detractors of Mullen keep changing. Maybe fishwater's top 20 win or whatever his measure of success is for Mullen will be accomplished this year.

What was Texas ranked when we beat them in 1991 to open the season?

I get that, but I concern myself less with "signature wins", than results. I mean Jackie's signature win came against Texas then, Bama, then Arkansas in '98. If Arkansas lost to SC and Kentucky in 98 and beat us, but we beat Kentucky would that signature loss even matter. We still would have gone to Atlanta. Again it's all silly nomenclature, the results are what matters. If we do go 5-7 this year but see great strides on defense and solid improvement on offense but we get ****** breaks in three games that could've put us at 8-4 do we think any less of Mullen because he didn't have a "signature win"? Some people know what to look for in a football team, as Der says, the last five down the stretch, we gave up. So move your bars wherever the hell you want them. I just care about moving in the right direction and seeing an improved product on the field. Signature wins or not, I want us in the top 4 of the west by 2015.

Dead on

Whatever it is, when it's accomplished it will be just written off and then a new goal placed. It's ridiculous. For those saying the Florida win in the swamp wasn't a big win, get real. How many times have they lost their, to us, over the past 30 games?

Because the antithesis is true. If we lose to Oklahoma State then we say Mullen lost his signature game, but we run the table in the next 11 which game would be the signature win? (Attention NAFOOM do not turn this into a State fans think they are going 11-1 thread.) It is an arbitrary claim about, the ability of our coach? the state of our program? Whenever I see signature win, I think about Appy State against Michigan, or Utah's against Bama. Does it mean those teams have stepped to that level? No. It's just something people say to legitimize their cindarella fantasies.

When was the last time we beat Georgia period?

When was the last time we beat Tennessee period?

When was the last time we won an SEC opener?

When was the last time we beat any sec team 4 times in a row?

All those are huge wins to me because they erased longterm negative stigmas on our program. Literally all that's left is winning in Arky and beating LSU...

I don't even understand this great superstition about the state of Arkansas? Did anyone ever stop to think that maybe they've just been better than us practically every time we've played them up there? This year is a whole different scenario...

I never thought about the first statement, it is kind of true. The second is not though, off the top of my head, we were better in 99. It's one of those things like Bama in Baton Rouge.

We'll beat Arkansas this year. When their coach spends half his press conference talking about their center and not much on any other player I feel confident.

Beating a strong SEC team is signature to me. This year beating LSU, ATM, AL, or SC says to me that we are starting to get over the hump. Win one and not let any of the other 3 beat the hell out of us.

That's bullsh*t a d you're just trolling.

Message Ronny for the archives. This has been discussed prior to y'all finally beating Mullen, Einstein.
