Mullen personally recruited Cam, he coached him at UF, they've had Cam over for dinner, they're good buddies. Everything was going great; Cam was en route to winning a JC NC and Mullen was setting the atmosphere (and a small fire) in Starkville, MS during his first season as Head Coach. Everything would come into place when Cam got to campus in January.

But a problem arose. The impertinent duo of Kenny Rodgers and Cecil Newton began pursuing money for Cameron to play ball at MSU. They knew they could pull some bills for his outstanding abilities. Once Mullen heard about the pursuance of money he knew, whether Cam got paid or not, that the season would be forfeited and his name dragged through the mud once it came out that the Cam Newton (and probably other athletes) got paid to play at Miss. State. We pulled the plug on his recruitment and, not letting another school take him without a service fee, we reported the incident.

Now, I've seen repeatedly that if the athlete, or party representing said athlete, pursues anything (within reason) but a scholarship they are not eligible to play, anywhere. Whether or not Kenny was truly representing the Newtons, wouldn't the fact still remain that money was pursued for the athlete's signature by a person that has had serious ties with the family and has "hepped" the athlete once before to "find an appropriate school" once he left UF for whatever reasons?

Also, how does this guy get away with being paid to match an athlete with a school?

I said it was after Mullen caught wind of money being sought. Why would a coach continue to recruit someone that we know will only be ruled ineligible and have a great season tainted by it. If Miss. State does it, we're going to get caught. Mullen isn't stupid, and he knew that nothing good would come of it.

When Mullen says, "you can read about it in my book." It's possible that the fan base turns on him if they found out that we would no longer take Cam, and he doesn't want that happening. We all have to be on the same page for this to work and it only takes one event like that for the fan base to never forgive him. We missed out on a Nat'l. Championship season, but it would have been taken away and we would lose scholarships, as well as facing a post season ban.

My understanding is that the parent = the child. If the parent is in violation, the child is as well. The NCAA knows this, but would rather watch the bowl games, let schools collect their $$, and then ask for returned wins later vs. stopping wins before they happen.

It's about the money. Let's make the money and we will deal with it later. Who wants to watch TCU and Oregon? Cam is big money to the NCAA and they are riding that mule just like Auburn and the SEC. Once Cam is in the NFL and he is gone, then Auburn will pay for their sins. The money will not go back. The only thing taken away will be the wins. NC and the Heisman.

I think this fan base is beyond sick to death of NCAA investigations, scholarship losses, probation, and being the general punching bag to the rest of the SEC and NCAA. If Dan gets us pretty much the death penalty, which Auburn very well could get when all is said and done, I don't think the fan base would be supporting Dan as much as want to believe.

How hard do 'dey get punished

My guess is not too bad. The NCAA isn't some rich, mean politician that sleeps with hookers and then has them arrested. I mean, come on! Auburn is the saddle that incubated this monstrous ****-storm of blatant corruption at the highest level, they can't get it too bad, right? They are going to punish them but it will not be anywhere near the Death Penalty; it will be a nullification of victories and titles, loss of some schollys, but not too many - my over/under guess is 5 - and they will have a 3yr. post season ban.

Look at it this way, if they get it too hard it's as if the NCAA is trying to cover their misdeeds.
Just the slap on the wrist, the wag of the finger and the wink of an eye should suffice enough teach them, a good lesson.

Kenny Rogers et al. were going around pimping out Cam to various schools. It was too fishy for MSU, Tennessee, and Oklahoma to take the offer. Some Auburn booster catches wind of what they are trying to do. Someone from Auburn (maybe not even a coach) approaches Cecil Newton and tells him that they will squeal to the NCAA unless Cam goes to Auburn. There will be no offers or payments of money in the deal. In exchange, Cam gets to play at a school in which he will be totally eligible and will get his crack at the pros. Cam heard about this some time after the fact too, got pissed, but knew that he had to play to get paid. He's biding his time until after the draft and will then come clean with the story. Nothing Auburn can do will stop it. Auburn is fine with it because the NCAA really stepped in it with the eligibility decision.

You can sign an athlete who asks for money. You just need to report it to the NCAA, declare him ineligible, and seek reinstatement. The athlete is likely facing a 1 or 2 game suspension, at most.
