And will hopefully raise expectations for all students state-wide. Personally, I'm a public school supporter because I think it's necessary for my kids to learn how to deal we different situations and people. I think it will benefit them in the real world.

If you don't send your kid to school in the Delta or Jackson proper, this is a basically meaningless statement.

According to their website, it started for K-2 in the 2011-2012 school year, 3-8 in 2012-2013, and the remainder in 2014-2015. So a current third grader would have had common core since first grade.

Simpler and easier is not always better in education. Don't we want our kids to have a more fundamental understanding of math than the ability to simply add change and recite addition and multiplication tables? Don't we have a shortage of home grown engineers and scientists?

I don't know anything about common core and how well it meets these aims. But we shouldn't reflexively react negatively if something they learn at school is difficult.

What are these results of which you speak? Wait until you're sending your little snowflake off to school for the first time before you judge me for not liking this ******** they're putting out now and calling it "educatuon". The school we've chosen for lil'MotherTucker is proven the best option in Meridian at preparing her for a successful future.

I meant our national averages compared to other countries. Nobody gets less out of more than 'Merica

you call it BS. I dont know what CC really is. Explain to me why it is ********.

you calling your daughter snowflake is creeping me out haha

Why did something have to be tried? There were lots of people that were educated before no child left behind. Individual schoold districts could have tried to copy what other successful school districts did. Or states could have come up with something to try. Even if you are a believer in the "Something must be done, this is something, so it must be done" school of logic, there was no reason to apply that at the federal level.
You realize it began developing with the National Governors Association right? The States had a huge hand in developing this. It didn't become some bogey man federal power grab until the President backed it.

No, it became a federal issue when the federal gov't made eligibility for certain grants contingent on adopting a national standard, when common core is basically the only one available.

Like I said, go out and adopt something on the state by state level. But don't use the federal gov't purse strings to try to push a common curriculum. All we really know about elementary and secondary education is that it is at best hit or miss and we don't know how to fix it with anything within our control. What about that situation screams, we should take steps to make it uniform on a national level?

Hopefully my son gets her next year then. He was held at the elementary school in 6th grade, as was all 6th graders at their respective feeder schools, because of overcrowding at the Jr High. It's time for Northwest Rankin and Flowood to pull out of the Rankin County School District. Rankin County would be broke if it wasn't for Flowood and the parents of all the kids at NWR Elementary, Oakdale, Highland Bluff and Northshore. But yet people in Pelahatchie, Brandon, 17'ing Puckett and McLauren constantly cause us not to get the much needed expansion of NWR we desperately need. Those same people benefit in their schools though from the taxes generated in Flowood. If we formed our own municiple school district and got the rest of Rankin county out of our pockets we could have nicer facilities than Madison Central.

And then there is Weathersby's Palace in Brandon. Where did all that money come from to build that waste. Flowood. Pearl had it right when they told the rest of the county to go to hell. It's time for Flowood to do the same.

She moved up a grade because she didn't want to teach in a trailer.

I think the district thought if they put a ton of portables at those precious elementary schools, then they could get something done about it. I guarantee if they start throwing a bunch of portables up and Northshore that something will happen.

This shows how little you know about public schools. My son attends a high school with a very diverse student body. My previous statement is absolutely correct. There are many great public schools especially in the northern part of the state.

Just one? Do I even want to know what it is? Seems like only one would have easily in the 90th percentile.

You need to compile these and post them. This summer, when things are slow. After we get back from Omaha.

No doubt QKing is intelligent and Karl Marx hypothetically would probably be THE most intelligent poster on SPS if he were alive and chose to hang out here but that doesn`t make me want to live in an out of control nanny state that attempts to dictate every aspect of our lives like some seem to want/need to survive.

The voters in the county need to remember your sentiment ..................................................................

when Flowood shows up YET AGAIN asking for county tax payers to forego their portion of ad valorem taxes in order to fund yet another economic development project in Flowood. You act like Flowood developed and expanded in a vacuum. Flowood developed with the help of all county taxpayers. Don't be so short-sighted.

My wife the ex teacher pointed out last night that the ACT test will begin to

change to align more with common core approach. It is going to happen according to her.

Yes, there are great public schools in many parts of the state. I just don't get why people like to pat themselves on the back for "supporting public schools" by sending their kids there. what do you expect people to say? "Really? You send your kid to the good school that's free, even though there are people that don't look exactly like you there? Wow, that's so admirable that you support public schools like that. I bet it was really tough not to spend $6k to $15k a year to send your kid to a school where your kid wouldn't get a much better education, but would be able to avoid people that aren't exactly like you."

Congratulations on not being a huge racist I guess? The reality is most good parents support and send their kids to good schools, whether they are private or public. It's weird that the parents that have the easiest route to do this, i.e., sending their kids to the good school for free (or at most only have to spend a little more on a house to get into the right school district and maybe make a commute to work), like to pat themselves on the back for it the most. Lots of parents in Mississippi pay taxes that go to ****** public schools, pay for private school tuition so their kid(s) can get a decent education, and donate to the school over tuition so that less fortunate kids in the area can also afford to get a decent education. Some of them will pat themselves on the back also, but I understand that a little bit more.

GWB and Ted Kennedy wrote NCLB

Common Core began with George W. Bush, for the record. Not saying this to you in particular, just clearing the water. This all began with W's No Child Left Behind that was done nationally after it was done in Texas.

Folks always forget Teddy Kennedy was co-author of NCLB. Teddy K and GWB writing anything should scare the bejezzus out of anyone. And just because NCLB stunk it shouldn't mean that we have to come up with another program to fix that. In 10 year's we'll be moaning about the new mega program being instituted to fix Common Core.

Just let the teachers teach.

I like common core. I guess that makes me a pinko commie liberal, but I think it teaches the kids to use deductive reasoning abilities to come up with an answer rather than just memorize stuff. I have 3 kids in elementary school and they are doing just fine with it. It's more challenging, but that will only help them as they get older. Let's face it, the ONLY reason most people are opposed to it is because Obama likes it. For right wingers, that is like the devil himself supporting something.

My argument is with the school board. Anyone with common sense can see NWR is busting at the seams. But what does the school board do? Funds that rediculous school board building in Brandon, unnessesarily expands Brandon HS and pays for numerous "pork barrel" projects at other schools. Who the 17 goes to Brandon for anything anymore? Even the people from Brandon go to Flowood to shop and eat.

Ahh yes. A conservative that wants the Govt out of their lives except when they dont agree with something and it is full steam ahead govt.

Not every liberal wants a "nanny" state. In fact, most I know dont. Just like not every conservative is a tin foil hat wearing moron.

Id venture to say that most "libs" under 40 arent really libs. They are libertarians, as I would be qking is.

Point remains. Qking is a smart guy.

Edit - although the post may come across as some conservative/lib thing, it wasnt intended that way

Adding change and learning multiplication tables??? That is the FUNDAMENTALS to math. You have to learn the basics before getting deep into the real math. The world changing math that is.

adding
subtracting
multiplying
dividing
etc.

Basics are the most important. Pretty much like anything else.

For credibility, I am/was a mechanical engineer.

Very very ironic. I responded to a Rand Paul email not 30 mins ago encouraging him to run for president. I am so tired of our current political parties and their extremities on both sides I could puke.

If that's a number line, then I don't know what a number line is. I was taught that a number line was a line with numbers from negative infinity to positive infinity, with 0 in the middle. It basically only showed the relative position of numbers, both positive and negative. That's why I said it was simple and basically useless. I took what was then called "new math" back in the early to mid sixties in junior high and high school. The books we used were basically published manuscripts since they were so new; soft cover, typed with a regular typewriter and then reproduced; from Yale University Press.

Your thought process is the same as mine, and the only logical way to do it, really. So if that's the number line way, I guess I do number lines too and didn't know it. I also memorized multiplication tables through at least 12x12 and that's certainly handy. Don't think they do that any more.

I'd venture to say you'd be very wrong. Most liberals under 40 I meet are 'libertarian' on things they like (gay marriage, drugs) but are quite the statists when it comes to crony capitalism, 2nd amendment, economic freedom, school choice, etc.

So socially liberal, statist and fiscally conservative is what.......

Id venture to say you are wrong sir.
