Riley and his staff are better recruiters than Pelini and staff. But not by much. This year's recruiting was B- material. The failure to recruit a single defensive tackle will come back to haunt this staff in two years. And even though we got Farniok we desperately needed another quality offensive tackle. Games are won in the trenches and this class was very average in that regard.
And zero recruits yet for 2017? Count me among those who still think Riley has a long, long way to go toward restoring Nebraska to elite status. A good start would be to not lose 7 games next year. He seems very good, over his career, at producing losing seasons. So despite the sunshine pumping of posters like HTO and Archie, I remain firmly in the unconvinced and unimpressed camp. So far Riley has done zilch. Slightly above average recruiting and a losing season. That is what I see. Everything else is hype and hot air.
Prove me wrong Mike Riley. Please
If I understand you correctly, by slightly above average you mean slightly above average for Nebraska, because we've averaged around 27.6 for the last decade or so, and Mikes first full class came it at 25.
To contrast that, some here were critical of Harbaugh's recruiting, referring to it as "antics". Well not only did he bring in the #4 Rivals recruiting ranking for 2016, up from 31&50 the prior 2 seasons, he also improved Michigan's record from 5-7 to 10-3. Significant Recruiting and Season Improvements.
Mike Riley, on the other hand, improved Nebraska's recruiting from 32&31 to 25, but digressed in the W/L department from 9-3 to 6-7, albeit very close losses.
So If your a Michigan fan, you have to be very encouraged for the future.
If your a Nebraska fan, you should probably find someone or some other program to be critical of besides Jim Harbaugh and Michigan.
With the resurgence of Ohio St. & Michigan, it certainly appears that the conference title drought will continue into the foreseeable future, although the West seems to be wide open and Mike has built a reputation on occasionally rising up and beating some highly ranked teams. Sadly, part of that reputation also seems to be losing games he is expected to win.
Nebraska fan optimism rests in the hope that Mike Riley can turn those narrow losses into victories.
