in the first half. Unless you are playing full court basketball, that is just ridiculous. They don't do that in the NBA with 24 minute halves.

After the debacle Wednesday night, some guys need to have a fire put under their ***. Seems like a signal is being sent that PT is up for grabs.

No, that's not it. We did the same thing Wednesday night. We are 10 games into the schedule and Stans still has no clue what our rotation is. It's impossible to have any kind of continuity in a half court offense when you are playing 11 different guys each half. If we were full court pressing and playing up tempo like we should be, I would have no problem with it.

Can you not see the difference in playing Ravern Johnson last year as a true freshman in non-conference games to develop him for later in the season and playing 11 different players in game 10??

It looks like Stans has tightend it up a little in the second half.

Last year: Stans didn't play Ravern Johnson in the non-conference games, hindering his development.

This year: Stans is playing everyone, including freshmen, in game 10, which is a non-conference game, and you're still bitching. So, the evidence here leads to the conclusion that you're just gonna ***** no matter what.

+1
so it was bad to not play the inexperienced players early last season, but you dont want them to play early this season? ...and this game is still 'early'.

Turner @ 4. He played well. I think he should take Randy's minutes @ 2.

Ravern probably should have gotten more min last season. I agree with whomever said that. I think that Bost/Osby/Augustus should be developed early this season as well. Benock should not see the court again, regardless of is he can hit 25 3's in a row in practice or beat coach Stans in HORSE?

I liked the 12-14 footers from Augustus and Osby both. That kind of stuff with kill a zone. Can any of you coach types answer why our offense struggles with a bigger power forward in the game along with Varnado? My best guess is it is a spacing issue. Tonight with Turner in that "power" forward position Varnado didn't have to fight through as many double and triple teams and had a better chance to score 1 on 1. = Jarvis with >20 pts. Four guys standing around the perimeter opens up lanes for Bost or Turner to cut to the basket and dish or shoot. I guess that will work for the time being. I am pleased with a big win over a marginal opponent. I have to wonder if we get 20 wins and go to the dance how far do we go with Ravern/Phil playing power forward. Augustus and Osby need to be developed.

I am reminded of Croom having Omar Connor in a drop back passing role at quarter back when I see Osby and Augustus scratching their heads on the bench and Turner/Ravern getting stuck at 4 because our offensive gameplan is so defficient.............did I just compare my favorite MSU coach to the former coach Croom? Ouch. What would Coach Stans say to the ninja if at the end of the season Kirby has to go coach high school and a bench coach is brought in to run the offense. Do ninjas say please or even give an option of yes or no?

Wow, I guess I really have to spell it out for you two.

Last year Stans gave Gordon, Stewart, and Hans almost all of the minutes in non-conference play. In fact, we really on went 6 deep with experienced players. But we had a guy on the bench, who was 2 time Mr. Basketball in the state. He was tall, athletic, and could shoot. It was obvious we needed to develop him in the non-conference because we need his depth in the backcourt. He definitely could have helped us defensively against Shane Foster for example. Unfortunatley, Stans gave him very little PT in the non-conference giving valuable minutes to guys like Riley Benock and Phil Turner. It became very obvious in the Memphis game that Ravern could have helped us a lot more during the year. So people wondered why he wasn't developed.

The only guys like that on this team are Dee Bost, who starts, and Osby who is getting a lot of good playing time. So we are developing the younger guys who have good upside. The problem is, he is playing guys like Riley Benock still. When Riley's not hitting shots what does he bring to the table? Holcomb, Beckham, etc. Last year we just wanted a strong 8 man rotation and we never developed it. This year he's playing 11 guys, many who shouldn't see the court at all. Like I said, he shortend up the rotation in the second half and we played much better. Eventually, he needs to settle on an 8 man rotation.

i agree, the rotation will have to be trimmed...eventually.

but it is still not even conference play, and we still clearly dont have definite players for each spot...just look at the fact that Turrner got time at the 4 today as proof.
so since it isnt yet conference play, we are playing teams who are below us in talent level(in theory) and can use the games to develop players, and last season we found out what a lack of experienced depth will do to the team...all that adds up to more players in the rotation.

jarvis is at the 5, no question. who is at the 4?...who the F knows?!?! Osby, Augustus, and B Johnson are playing hot potato with the spot and apparently none of em can manage to hold onto it. so Stans keeps playing em all, waiting for someone to actually step up. Bailey isnt included b/c i just tossed him in as Jarvis' backup.
as for the 2 spot, Barry was doing well for the first half dozen games this season...but ever since, he has been horrible. just disgustingly bad at shooting. so Stans is playing a **** ton of other guards as well in hopes that someone, be it Barry or another, actually steps up and takes posession of the position.

Holcombe and Ravern are totally different players, and i personally see value in both of their strenghts. clearly, Holcombe isnt as gifted athletically as Ravern, but he has value on the court.

till 8 players are actually able to define themselves on the court as being the best 8, the most reliable 8, the winning 8...why would Stans play less of em?
